And while Detroit isn't "young" and "flashy", they did win the President's Trophy this season by a handy margin.

7 points? I wouldn't exactly call it running away with the thing.

And plus they play 32 games in the Central Divison, which I think is the worst divison in the league.

Tippett gets a three year extension - http://www.dallasstarshockey.piczo.com/?cr=4

that playoff run saved his ass. had he had another one and done, his ass would be joining Avery Johnson in being told to leave and don't let the door hit you in the behind.

Wade phillips is currently on notice.

honestly i was surprised that tip wasn't fired after last season or in the middle of this season. They seem to have alot of faith in him and he finally delivered. General managment needed to go, Armstrong damn near ruined the team that won had that 99/2000 run. he fell in to the trap of patching things up with either severly overrated players ie Turgeon, Arnott or old broken down parts long past their prime ie Kamensky, Lindros.

In a move that surprised absolutely no one from Pittsburgh, Therrien is mixing up his lines for Game 2.

Game 1 (and most of the playoffs)

Dupuis - Crosby - Hossa

Malone - Malkin - Sykora

Kennedy - Staal - Ruutu

Laraque - Hall - Talbot

has become

Game 2

Malone - Crosby - Hossa

Talbot - Malkin - Sykora

Dupuis - Staal - Kennedy

ROBERTS - Hall - Ruutu

Eh. I don't really see what this does, except maybe serve notice that the players need to play harder. I don't think the lineup was the problem, though. I think I would've preferred Therrien keep the lines the same and express some faith in his players to play harder. I suppose if you want to get one in Detroit, though, you have to gamble a little bit.

Also, Pittsburgh is clearly not a hockey town:

http://penguins.nhl.com/team/app/?service=...rticleid=364294

That's why on Saturday 15,000+ paid five dollars a pop to pack into an empty Mellon Arena to watch the Pens play Game 1.

All proceeds go to the Mario Lemieux foundation.

Now cue the guy who says if his city had an exciting young team in the Stanley Cup final, they'd pack an empty building, too.

After catching up on three pages' worth of posts... I can't believe you guys think the goalie interference call was a bad call. It was definitely the right call--or, rather, it was a hooking or tripping call that was called goaltender interference. He hooked the goalie's leg as the shot was coming in. Penalty. No goal. Nice call, one that was tough to see in real time but really obvious on the replay.

That is the result of Detroit effectively taking the month of February off. They ran away with it.

I'd also hazard that the Southeast Division was worse this year.

Not sure if this was mentioned, and hell, I don't feel like going through the 2 pages to find out, but did anyone see the Red Wings Ice Attendant swing around the octopus before the game? Wonder if he'll be fined for it.

Doesn't he do that before every game?

He is allowed to do it in the Zamboni entrance. Just can't do it on the ice.

3-0 Wings in the 3rd period of Game 2... I'll say this for them, they may have choked a lot in the playoffs over the years, but when they do manage to make it to the finals, they always seem to dominate their opposition. And to shut the Pens out for the first 110 minutes (and counting) of the series... if that's not a Finals record, it has to be pretty damn close.

Detroit didn't distance itself through division games. The Wings only went 17-12-3 against the Central (Chicago and Nashville had better division records than Detroit). Detroit did pretty well against the rest of the Western Conference: 15-2-3 vs. the Northwest teams and 15-5-0 vs. the Pacific teams; and 7-2-1 against the Eastern Conference.

And, sad to say, the Southeast Division was probably the worst division in the league this past season....

This series is over.

I knew Detroit would be a tough opponent but I wasn't expecting the Pens to be shutout in every game. This is the worst first 2 games in Stanley Cup Final history.

Haha, NBC's Wundermannschaft is getting pimp-slapped. At least when the Oilers got swept by the Isles in 1983, they scored a couple of goals in the first two games...

[edit] i speel gud.

[Croatia National Team Manager Slavan] Bilic then went on to explain how Croatia's success can partially be put down to his progressive man-management techniques. "Sometimes I lie in the bed with my players. I go to the room of Vedran Corluka and Luka Modric when I see they have a problem and I lie in bed with them and we talk for 10 minutes." Maybe Capello could try getting through to his players this way too? Although how far he'd get with Joe Cole jumping up and down on the mattress and Rooney demanding to be read his favourite page from The Very Hungry Caterpillar is open to question. --The Guardian's Fiver, 08 September 2008

Western Conference > Eastern Conference

Despite the East being more exciting to watch, the last two Stanley Cup finals have made it painfully obvious that the West is a much stronger Conference.

This series is over. The Penguins are already using the other team is clutching and grabbing us card. A sure fire sign that you are being dominated and that the end is near.

I hope this is a sweep at this point because the one-sidedness of this series has been painful to watch.

You see, this is EXACTLY why I think that this series is going to hurt the progress of the NHL. Now I'm not saying the sky is falling, but seeing the Been There Done That team just throttle the New Exciting Super-Kids definitely won't help bring in many new fans.

Detroit just seems too strong for Pittsburgh.

But man, what a great team to watch! They play well on both sides of the ice...
