And they didn't say anything about TV ratings, which I'm sure is where they got a lot of viewership. Sport
Caps in a slump right now.....but dayum, Mason is a beast in goal.I appreciate all of the national attention he's getting right now, but I don't want it to become like the equivalent of the sports illustrated curse. He's still very young, I don't know how he's going to handle all of the attention and now extra scouting that's going to get thrown his way. Still, it's great to see a Blue Jacket get some national press. Playoffs 09 here we come!

If he didn't crack under the pressure from playing for Team Canada and all the media baggage that came with it, then he can last in the NHL. But I am glad that FINALLY a Blue Jacket is being promoted around the league to this very high level. Him winning the Calder or any other award would help him out even more. Still MIGHTY
Don't be so headstrong to give Steve Mason the Calder...Watch out for Bobby Ryan. He's producing at a more than a point per game pace right now and is closing in on the rookie scoring lead after only being in 25 (26?) games so far this season. Although it's clearly a 3 horse race (Ryan, Mason, Versteeg) don't be so fast to glorify the kid. | ANA | LAA | LAR | LAL | ASU | CSULB | USMNT | USWNT | LAFC | OCSC | MAN UTD |

Mason has done a lot during his very, very, very short NHL career. As Shanurr said, his shutout accomplishment is pretty great, especially for a rookie. This is just insane!!! HedleyLamarr
The Blues go for 3 in a row tomorrow at their seasons half-way.A win would put them 8 back of a playoff spot.Believe you me, the Blues will make the playoffs when its all said and done.8 points back, but 6 teams they need to jump in the process. Ain't happening, dude.I am a Cardinal.

I was commenting about how they seem never cheer for their Flyers, but rather always jeer Crosby. In any case, the pens won. Not just won, but actually outplayed their opponent. Not just any opponent, but a legitimate opponent. And they had emotion. c...c...could this be the spark?maybe notShould be a great game tomorrow night vs. the Craps, though. Sport
4-3 vs. Colorado in regulation. Steve Mason didn't have a great game either, but they were able to get by with 3 third period goals. This must be what it feels like to watch a team make a competitive run to the NHL playoffs.

gingerbreadmann
I know Crosby sells and Ovechkin sells and the Canada teams are all popular but when you look at this you have got to be kidding me. Just unreal. You know, I kind of like how it's under the radar. Now that Kessel is out and Bergeron is out and Sturm is out and Lucic is day-to-day basically, this team is facing the most adversity it has faced and likely will face. And you know what? They just took down the big bad red hot Habs 3-1. I could make a case for Wheeler for the Calder over any of those other guys less maybe Mason right now and Savard or Krejci for the Hart. And they have 2 of the top 3 goalies in the league right now. And oh, yeah, Zdeno Chara and Michael Ryder. You guys or anyone else may not pay attention or care but I'm going to enjoy the hell out of this team. I can't wait until Kessel, Bergeron, and Sturm come back and I can't wait for every game.

STL FANATIC
Next coach fired, Andy Murray. He's a good coach. He'll coach a playoff team in the not too long-term future. This Blues team is as frustrating a team as I have ever watched, even with all their legitimate excuses (the Islanders may be more devastated by injuries than the Blues, but nobody else is close).I can't take it anymore, and it's time for changes.I swear 2/3 of our losses have come on goals scored in the final 5 minutes. Sodboy13
Might as well restart the regular season discussion thread for the NHL. Some news today, Brendan Shanahan will sign with the New Jersey Devils. He isn't signed but will sign and join at date to be determined. Brendan Shanahan is a New Jersey Devil once again.Devils President, General Manager and CEO Lou Lamoriello announced Saturday that the former Devil and three-time Stanley Cup champion has agreed in principle to return to the club that drafted him second overall in 1987.Shanahan has not yet signed a contract, which Lamoriello said will be worked out, "in the next couple of days."There is no timetable set for when Shanahan will see his first game action this season, but he is expected to be more than just a power-play specialist. Lamoriello confirmed that Shanahan will be skating on his own in the meantime.http://devils.nhl.com/team/app/?service=pa...rticleid=403403No word on what number he will wear. Both 11 (his original Devil number) and 14 (what he has worn elsewhere) are taken.Catching up on the new thread...- Perhaps Shanahan will reach back to his Whaler days and put on the #94 sweater?- Steve Mason is out-of-his-head good. And it's really nice to finally see the Blue Jackets approaching legitimacy.- Sorry, Justin, but the Blues aren't making the cut this year. Fans and management alike just have to admit that, from the golf cart mishap onward, this has been a textbook case of a snakebitten season, and hope for better things come '09. And there's no reason there shouldn't be better things in '09, barring another gubenatorial carpet mishap.- Why is it that every time I read about the Thrashers, I find myself saying "Oh, Jesus Christ"?
