A Movement to Ban the Most Hated Font

My boss (and worse, her boss) INSIST on everyone in our department using Comic Sans on every spreadsheet, agenda, memo, etc. that we produce. When I took this job, 2 years ago, I made an impassioned plea to switch to ANY OTHER FONT. No dice.

She went on vacation last month and I filled in for her. The last thing she said to me was something like "don't change the format".

About 2 months ago, they asked us to publish any training material we produced in Comic Sans. Training material to be used by a staff of like 700 data entry/customer service personnel.

Won't do it, don't care if they fire me.

Worst part of it all, when she sends her monthly "style guide", she insists on calling it "Comic Dans". Can't tell you why.

If it weren't for the RIDICULOUS devotion to that stupid font, she would be the perfect boss.

i hate impact even more than comic sans.

+1

Amazing quotation from my class: "Yeah, the feedback we got said that the type needed to have more impact, so we changed the font to Impact."

I like Impact when used for newspaper headlines. Otherwise, no thanks.

Makes me proud to say that I use Futura Light for my office emails.

At least the County is professional enough to use Arial for all official documents instead of the overused scribble that is Comic Sans.

I'm just refering to the big text. Is that not it?

I don't think so either, but that whole Keep Austin Weird slogan needs to die a painful death. Now.

Okay, I'll bite. What the hell does that mean anyway? I've heard it a couple times, but not really enough to understand its significance.

I don't see why the font gets so much hate. So what if people use it a lot? People also use Times New Roman, Arial and Verdana a lot.

Why should we ban a font just because it's overused? Good designers will avoid it, bad designers will embrace it. If you don't like the font, don't use it. I really don't see the issue here.

Wiki has it largely right:

The slogan has basically worn out its' welcome, and has become a rally cry for whiny bohemian fashonistas. If you're weird...be weird! Don't wear some stupid shirt pointing out your "weirdness". There's actually an entire store filled with this crap at our airport and I shake my head every time I pass it. This is the first impression people have of our city? Some forced hipster, corporate tye-dye crap. I visited a sibling in Chicago last summer and saw three of those frickin' shirts at one festival. Hope this answers your question.

I was definitely not expecting the most hated font to be Comic Sans.

I was expecting Grunge, Times New Roman, or even Arial or Helvetica. I guess I just tuned out any usage of Comic Sans beyond using it to add demeaning speech bubbles to pictures of coworkers.

I have to agree with Quillz....

I think Copperplate is way overused as well. As soon as someone wants something "professional looking" they reach for Copperplate.

Overuse + misuse = seething hate.

Verdana is fine for small letters on a computer screen. Large point or paper output exposes it as hideous.

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

Well yes, I agree there. Comic Sans is a great font to use when giving tests to 1st and 2nd graders, but not for any advertisement that tries to sell to the public, or any business, as santoleri3 stated a few posts above.

I've never seen Sand before; it is a pretty crappy looking font.

Also, Myriad Pro seems to be used very often when one needs a "professional" font. It was used on Apple's site, their iPod models, computers, etc. for many years, until very recently, when I believe it was replaced with Helvetica and Podium Sans.
