Worst (or Best) Trades of all Time

Flames trade 2nd Round pick to the Sharks (Marc-Edouard Vlasic) for Miikka Kiprusoff who backstopped the Flames to a magical playoff run in 2004 to get within one goal of bringing the Stanley Cup back to Canada.

Trade worked out for both teams Vlasic is going to be a good solid defender

Here's a few:

Falcons trade: Tim Dwight, 2001 1st round pick (#5 overall) 2001 3rd round pick and 2002 2nd round pick

Chargers trade: 2001 1st round pick (#1 overall)

Ended up being Tim Dwight, LaDainian Tomlinson, Tay Cody, & Reche Caldwell for Michael Vick. I still wonder to this day where the Falcons would be had they kept the 5th overall and still picked LT.

--------

I've always wondered how Dr. J ended up with the Sixers...turns out he was traded to em for $3 Mil. Wow.

The Patriots getting Randy Moss from the Raiders for a 4th round pick...seemed like a fair trade at first seeing as how Moss was seemingly on the end of his career...but pairing Moss with Brady would be the bane of the NFL's existence for at least 18 games.

My favorite: Tigers trade [willmorris]some prospect[/willmorris] to the Braves for Doyle Alexander

Everyone MLB team has ripped off the Pirates at some point.

The Cubs took advantage of Pittsburgh in time for their '03 playoff run by taking Aramis Ramirez & Kenny Lofton for never-was prospect Bobby Hill.

The Rangers trading Chris Young and Adrian Gonzales for Adam Eaton and Akinori Otsuka (even though Aki was great for a couple of years...)

However, remember Gonzales was traded even before that; Marlins to the Rangers for Ugueth Urbina. talk about short term success (for both the Marlins and Urbina's salary).

There are so many bad trades which I will have to take time to measure the worst. plus, remember that the NFL really does not make trades.

You take in the entire story of the trade and it gets even better.

The Patriots traded the #28 pick in the first round to the San Francisco 49ers for their first round pick in the 2008 draft (#7, ended up being Jerrod Mayo after another deal) and the 110th pick, aka the Moss pick.

Babe Ruth for "No, No, Nanette" :P

Damn. Beat me to it.

Me too.

So instead, I will prove you all stupefied with an example of the Pirates fleecing a team - the Red Sox, no less - over a confusing 9-day period that saw 3 players traded to the other team and then back 9 days later. However, the net effect of the trade went as follows:

Boston trades IF Freddy Sanchez to Pittsburgh for P Jeff Suppan and P Scott Sauerbeck. Horrible! :P

And how could we forget the grim dealings of the Montreal Expos with the Cleveland Indians:

Cleveland trades Bartolo Colon and Tim Drew to Montreal for Grady Sizemore, Brandon Phillips, Cliff Lee, and Lee Stevens.

Colon pitched 117 innings for the Expos, albeit not badly, and Drew 24.2. Disregarding Stevens, who flamed out like Drew on the other side, you can probably figure out the rest.

Ouch.

Holy :censored:. Seriously, that's all that needs to be said.

Absolutely. I forgot Lee was in the deal until I looked it up, and even then it would have been unbelievably bad. Jesus Christ.

Lets see, off the top of my head, I can think of Bobby Abreu to Philly for Kevin Stocker to the Rays.

But the Delmon Young, and Brendan Harris for Matt Garza, and Jason Bartlett is starting to look like one.

here's some I looked up

  • Orioles send Curt Schilling, Pete Harnisch and Steve Finley to Astros for Glenn Davis
  • Red Sox send Jeff Bagwell to Astros for Larry Andersen
  • Mariners send Derek Lowe and Jason Varitek to Red Sox for Heathcliff Slocumb
  • Rangers deal Sosa, Alvarez and Fletcher to White Sox for Harold Baines and Fred Manrique
  • Expos send Randy Johnson, Brian Holman and Gene Harris to Mariners for Mark Langston
  • Cubs trade Lou Brock to Cards for Ernie Broglio
  • Mets send Tom Seaver to Reds for four players
  • Astros send Freddy Garcia, Carlos Guillen and John Halama to Mariners for Randy Johnson

Even though the Vick deal looks bad from an on the field perspective, I still think it worked in the Falcons favor. Vick singlehandedly turned the Falcons around from a somewhat ignored franchise, to one of the most marketed teams in the NFL. The money Atlanta made off of Vick makes the trade completely worth it IMO.

But it's not like the Chargers got the "bad" side of the deal.

Y'all done made it this far and NO ONE has brought up Mike Ditka trading his entire 1999 draft (not to mention two picks for the year after that) for Ricky Williams?

No one???

(Okay cool...I just wanted to be the first one to do it, then. ^_^ )

*Disclaimer: I am not an authoritative expert on stuff...I just do a lot of reading and research and keep in close connect with a bunch of people who are authoritative experts on stuff. 😁

Considering the Skins ain't really do :censored: with those picks, I can see how this trade wasn't mentioned. As a Skins fan, I sure as hell wasn't going to be the one. :P

I can't believe I made it to this point without seeing the most one-sided trade of all time:

Cubs deal Lou Brock and a couple others to St. Louis (of all teams) for pitcher Ernie Broglio and a couple others. Broglio would go on to win 7 games for the Cubs, the Cards won the World Series that year, and oh yeah, had Lou Brock...

Ottawa Trades to the Islanders: Alexei Yashin

Ottawa gets from the Isles: Bill Muckalt, Zdeno Chara, and a first round pick that ends up being Jason Spezza.

Not too bad :P

that trade to this day still pisses me off among others that milbury conducted.

i do realize it spurred our only 2 play off appearances in decade and a half. but still it makes me sick all the players that were given away. but it typified how that :censored: set this franchise back about 10 years.

As a New Yorker, I love this trade;

1992: Yankees trade OF Roberto Kelly to Cincinnati for OF Paul O'Neill. O'Neill would lead the Yankees to several World Series titles and won a batting crown in 1994 after hitting .246 and 14 homers in 1992.

A bad trade for New York

1992: Mets trade P David Cone to Blue Jays for Ryan Thompson and Jeff Kent. While Cone leads Toronto to a WS title, Kent becomes an attitude problem for New York in the mid 1990s.

2000: Jays trade future batting title champion Michael Young to the Rangers for Esteban Loaiza.

Sure would have been nice to have him at SS the last 9 years rather than a revolving door of Alex Gonzalez, Chris Woodward Russ Adams, David Eckstein, Royce Clayton, and John McDonald.

Phillies send Larry Bowa and some prospect to the Cubs for Ivan DeJesus.

Also, Phillies send John Hernstein, Adolpho Phillips, and some Canadian prospect to the Cubs for Bob Buhl and Larry Jackson.

I know the sarcasm notes the obvious, but it needs to be stated. The prospect was Ryne Sandberg as a throw-in, for goodness sakes.

"The views expressed here are mine and do not reflect the official opinion of my employer or the organization through which the Internet was accessed."

Dr. Kelso: My son is a big baseball fan. Not so much playing it, but more the designing and sewing of uniforms.

Tyler: That's neat.

Dr. Kelso: No, it's not.
