True, although Jones could have requested an easier opponent for their first game, but chose a tough divisional foe.

I have to give Jerry Jones some credit, as much as it pains me.

Jerry Jones knows how to pick 'em. He requested the Ravens to close out the old Texas Stadium.

Really... The NFL allowed Jerry Jones to handpick his own opponents?

And even if he was allowed to, then why, of all teams, the Baltimore Ravens?

When the schedule was made before the 2008 season, Jerruh wanted an easy opponent his supposedly powerful 13-3 Cowboys could beat up on, and bullied the other owners and he got the 6-10 Ravens. Too bad for Jerruh that the Ravens turned it around last year while his own team floundered.

didn't see the game - was the scoreboard an issue at all?

So the Eagles might have actually requested the rematch with the Buccaneers in '03? Wow... that didn't quite work out for them.

I'm not sure, but I'd think on situations like opening a new stadium the opponent had to be picked way before the NFC title game was played that season. And if you remember the Eagles absolutely PWN3D Tampa before that game...

It's common for teams to handpick opponents for the first game in a new park - the Packers chose the Bears to re-open Lambeau Field in 2003.

That can't be true. The Bears chose the Packers to reopen Soldier Field in 2003. Either way, the point stands that teams are given a choice in that situation.

You're right, of course. The Packers chose the Vikings to re-open Lambeau.

I really need to get more sleep.

The schedule doesn't come out until April or May, right? I think there is plenty of time to handle all requests and compile a schedule between the SB and then.

The "Jerry Jones Radio Show" from last Friday.

Richie Witt: "Did you hand pick the Giants?"

Jerry: "I did. I got to basically have real input into who we'd be playing. And yes, I wanted it to be as highly competitive as it could possibly be as opposed to the other."

Interview where Jones Says He Wanted NYG

Since owners know their opponents, like BBTV said, why not try to request who to play for the opener? Also, remember that the Ravens never played in Dallas in franchise history. For Sunday, TV/NBC also wanted the Giants, as Jerry states.

Note: Go to the midway point to hear the discussion of the opponent.

Teams know who next year's home and away opponents will be the moment the regular season is complete, so teams have plenty of time to pick who they wanted to play. But do all teams get to handpick a game each season, or do you have to win a Super Bowl or be "America's Team" to get dibs?

According to various sources, the Eagles "requested" to have this season's matchup with the Broncos played on week 17. The thought was that they are so concerned about the crowd cheering for Brian Dawkins and the Broncos that they wanted it to be a meaningless game on a cold and crappy day. Unfortunately for them, unless McNabb comes back healthy, there may not be any meaningless games at the end of the year.

My understanding is that any team can do this, for singular events such as the opening of a new stadium or the closing of an old one.
