2010 MLB New Logos, Uniforms, Patches

Man do I hate totally round (or square) logos. Always hated the Expos update, and the Rangers too. The new 76ers is the worst of both worlds, as it's a circle inside of a square. Also add me to the group of those who find the "Baseball Club" thing redundant, especially since the logo contains an image of an actual baseball.

I don't mind circular logos -- a logo has to have a shape, and the difference between any one shape and any other is essentially arbitrary, unless there are matters of identity that lend themselves to being more clearly communicated by certain shapes. As, for example, a circle better communicates the notion of a ball team's identity than, say, a pentagon.

But I'm with you on the "Baseball Club" thing. I totally understand why a team does that -- it's both a fauxback retroism and also a way to balance out the civic name at the top of the logo. You've gotta put something down on the bottom of the logo once you commit to putting "Minnesota" up at the top. But "Baseball Club" just feels like a cop-out. How about a pair of dingbats (stars, pennants, whatever) signifying the team's two World Series titles? Or something like "Est. 1901 1961"? Or even the series "1858 1901 1961"? Something different, something that would speak to the kinds of things the Twins are trying to say about the team's identity in the post-Metrodome era. (Which I think have to do with tradition, timelessness, and regional relevance.)

1961 flanked by two stars for the two world championships would be better than "baseball club."

I get 1901 (Washington Senators founded), but what's 1858? Minnesota statehood?

signifying championships isn't really a great idea, because then everything has to be updated if / when you win another one.

Not everything really has to have any kind of significant meaning - they could just put diamonds or stars or moons or clovers or horseshoes in there for balance.

Or maybe something like * M N * S T P *

I'm guessing the conversation would not go like this:

Team Owner: Third out! Whooooooo! Yeahhhhhh! World Champions! Raaaaaaaaaah!

Marketing Director: Sir, you realize this means we're going to have to spend a few thousand dollars on new stationery and website updates to add another star to our logo?

Team Owner: Got-dammit! Is it too late to order the manager to forfeit?

Anyway, you're right that every element of a logo doesn't have to mean something. But every element does have to have a reason for being there -- it has to communicate something within the context of the logo, even if it has no particular independent meaning of its own. Which is precisely the problem with "Baseball Club" -- it doesn't communicate anything. It's no worse than a bunch of marshmallow clovers would be, and so if I don't object to random dingbats, then I have no logical grounds for objecting to "Baseball Club." Either way, it's just random visual clutter.

One of the few things I really like about the Nationals primary logo is that they fill the dead space in the bottom of the logo not with "Baseball Club" or other throwaway text, and not with a random number of stars, but with nine stars. It's a nice reference to the flag and to patriotic bunting, but it's also a reference to the team, to the sport, and even to the fact that it's a National League club. Would have much preferred if the Twins had found a similar device that's in some way meaningful.

It'd go that way if Pohlad weren't dead.

Don't worry, with their payroll and philosophy, they'll never win another one anyway. :P

That should about do it for the "M" then.

Not so fast...

Seconded.

Damn. I was hoping so.

So we're either talking an alt cap, bringing the Twins to 3 caps; the home cap, which I highly doubt; or BP, a possibility. Or perhaps the above cap is the new home cap. But I'd guess the all-blue is going to remain the primary home.

Is it just the photo or is there a Royal Blue thread going straight down the seams of the cap (with the exception of the front two panels)?

that's a BP template, no?

No, and no. It's just the angle.

Prediction - the light-blue Royals cap will go the way of the gray road caps that the Orioles, Pirates, Royals, et al tried in the late '90s. They'll be back to royal by the ASG.

This cap would be better if there wasn't royal around the monogram. Just like the jersey would be better if the script wasn't royal.
