Division 1 College Conference Realignment

This makes since, though I don't thin they are going to 16 yet unless they somehow get Texas in as a full member (not looking good on that front). That means one of the NC-based schools need to switch to the North.

I think it's a very real possibility that they go 16. The Big East/12 are gonna be raided so the others will have to go somewhere.

I think it's a very real possibility that they go 16. The Big East/12 are gonna be raided so the others will have to go somewhere.

There's a lot of moving parts to say the least and I'm not sure any of these conferences have a plan.

Not sure what value geographical alignment would bring to the table here. When the ACC expanded to 2 divisions, the alignments were decidedly mixed-up to preserve rivalries within the same division. Also, the ACC chose the same alignment for both football and men's basketball - I doubt that's going to change.

Assuming the ACC goes to 16, I'd expect them to do something like this:

I stand corrected. I fished around a bit to try and find a good source on it because I don't like calling some one else out Apparently, they voted Saturday morning and they're announcing it Sunday at 9:30 am ET in a press conference.

Pretty much, teams leaving the Big East have to give a 27 month notice, so I guess this doesn't go into affect until 2013? I did not see this coming, atleast not this fast, but I can understand the ACC's move here. No use sitting on your hands while everyone else is bickering over what's going on. Completely out of left field though.

Anyway, I hate to see Syracuse/Georgetown turn into a once-a-year affair. That's one of the better rivalries in college basketball, even if it doesn't get the ESPN "omfg classic stuff here!" treatment that Duke/UNC receives.

One thing that has been mentioned here before that I heard on ESPN Radio tonight is that a good chunk of schools lose a ton of money on the non-revenue sports, and only make it up because of the money their football teams bring in. With the potential of a lot of teams moving to conferences that will only lengthen their travel distances, how is this going to affect these non-revenue sports? If sports like Mens Tennis are losing a ton of money right now as it is, how is this type of realignment going to make things better? Will the extra money they gain form moving to a better football conference really cover the extra losses in those other sports? The more I look at it, the more I think that realignment should be held strictly to football. I mean why not? Teams like Notre Dame and BYU basically do this anyway, why can't other schools do the same?

There's a few schools I'm really wondering about:

1. Villanova & Georgetown: These two Big East basketball schools are in FCS in football. Will they jump to FBS, or will they move conferences?

2. All the non-football schools in the Big East: will they join other leagues, create their own non-football league, or do the unthinkable and maybe create a football team?

3. The WAC newcomers Seattle, Denver and UT-Arlington: even though the WAC isn't the BCS conference, their football membership is a little short. Will one, two or possibly all create football teams to shore up this league?

4. UALR: With Denver moving to the WAC, Arkansas-Little Rock is the odd team out in the Sun Belt Conference. Could they join the Sunbelt Conference?

Texas in the ACC would be absurd. Let's have Oregon join the SEC while were at it. Greed a.k.a. The Lust For Money has destroyed rivalries and tradition.

Texas has bullied two conferences into breaking up. The only way they should be allowed in is if they made some MAJOR concessions (i.e. learn to share.)

If (when) the ACC goes to 16, West Virginia would seem like the obvious choice. They'd be an upgrade for the league in both football and basketball, and they would have many natural rivalries with other ACC schools. But unfortunately, their academic ranking isn't high enough to get approved by the current ACC schools (UNC and Duke in particular.)

Since west Virginia is likely out, if the ACC decides to honor the "Atlantic Coast" part of their name, the two next options would be Rutgers and UConn. Not really sure what Rutgers brings to the table, other than fitting the "academic profile" of the rest of the ACC and providing a natural rival for Duke. But adding UConn, while it wouldn't improve football, would mean that the ACC would have the 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2009, 2010, and 2011 men's basketball national champions.
