I have hope for the NHL in Virginia one day.

Sandwiched between the Capitals and Hurricanes, it seems like a tough sell.

Believe it or not, it wouldn't be. This is an argument I hear all the time from outsiders to the state. But, to be pefectly honest there aren't many Hurricanes fans in Virginia. The Capitals have support, but it's not as great as you would think. Most fans I've been able to observe over the years are Pens, Flyers, Lightning, Devils, Rangers, Red Wings, and Blue Jackets. Even the Preds have some fans scattered around. Don't get me wrong, there have always been Caps fans in VA. I used to be one a LONG time ago. But, with an unsuccessful team for many, many years and a failed Stanley Cup run in the '90s didn't give fans much to stir around for. In my opinion, the Caps didn't start selling to Virginians until Ovechkin. And even then, I swear I see more Crosby shirts and sweaters than Ovechkin. Before then, fans were pretty much spread across the floor. Attend a hockey game in Richmond or Norfolk sometime and you'll see what I mean.

Norfolk has for most of the time, has a huge fan base in hockey. I remember when the Gades/Ads rivalry, half of the arena was covered in blue & gold, the people in the Hampton Roads area love their team. I have to agree with WildWinger on this one, it is mainly a scattered team area, we have Caps, Pens, Flyers, Hurricanes, Wings, Ranger, even Predators fans all over the state. I would like to see the NHL come to Virginia, I think it can gain enough support as well.

--There are plans to put an NHL-standard building there (Seattle, Las Vegas, Salt Lake, Norfolk (?))

Rvrdgsfn shared this with me earlier. http://arenadigest.c...r-hampton-roads

There has been talks for almost 2 decades about bringing the NHL to the Old Dominion. I'm hoping that day is coming soon.

http://www.wavy.com/...-arena-proposal

The city council basically shot it down :( and the group plans now for Norfolk or Chesapeake

Honestly, that's where they should have been trying to put the thing in the first place. After reading through the proposal a bit it really wasn't a great deal. City council would have had to pay for most if not all the debt for the arena and it would have been located close to the beach front. Not the best idea when you take into consideration the cluster:censored: of traffic already in the downtown area. I'd say the best place to put the arena is outside of Norfolk near the suburbs. Kind of where the Hampton Coliseum is. It's only within 5 minutes of Norfolk and about 10 minutes from the beach. It also saves people from Williamsburg and Richmond a few extra minutes of traffic time to attend games. Oh well, I'm not discouraged. At least the proposals for arenas in both Richmond and Norfolk are flowing! For the longest time I worried we were going to fall into a sports pit of fire. But, it looks like we're resurging. I have hope for the NHL in Virginia one day.

This is really not like a auto manufacturer bidding for cities to host them, this sounds more like the developer hopping from city to city in the effort to have one of them bite on the concept. I use the word concept, since even the city's people talked very vague on what was actually presented. That group also wants to build a horse track as well.

WTF? Who builds a new horse racing track in today's market? Horse racing is basically done and the current tracks need both OTB and/or casino gaming to survive. That plan in itself made me think it is a farce.

Lastly, when your company's website just recolors the logo from the former Rover Group car brand + uses Comic Sans = I can't trust ya.

Yeah, probably not the most credible bid the city has seen. Big reason why I'm not overly disappointed in the deal not getting done. I think something good will come eventually.

The Energy Solutions Arena has a better ice seating layout than Phoenix and Seattle have. It wouldn't be ideal in Utah, but at least the red line is the center of the arena.

Glendale's arena is perfectly centered, right?

Smart is believing half of what you hear. Genius is knowing which half.

For the Yotes or Thrashers?

I was reading the Winnipeg Sun and they said next Friday.

One of many I've seen:

Atlanta folks seem a lot less sure. And think Atlanta only goes to Winnipeg if they somehow save Phoenix. Which I still think is unlikely.
