Money

I was shocked to see that there's no "money" thread. While there is one on Canada's new money, that's more of an announcement/release. The way I see it, it's like having a thread about the Islanders new third jersey but not a thread about possible league changes/general talk about league designs. Why should money be any different? So I was thinking we could use this thread to talk about coin/bill releases, collections, and cool designs. Some things I'd like to talk about:

- How Canada's coins will change once Prince William becomes the new King

- Any collections you guys have (i.e. Oldest coins you own; Did you collect Vancouver 2012 coins etc...)

- Cool designs you found

- The (Not-So) Great Debate: $1 Bills vs. $1 Coins and other trivial discussions

And the list goes on. Those were just some things I was thinking about. I like the Parks Canada collection, own a 1997 35th Summit Series Anniversary Set (given to me when I was a baby, I first found out just a few years ago), and own a 1919 US penny.

I collected both the 1999 and 2000 Canada quarter sets. I got about 20 of the State quarters, but i have no clue where those are now.

I have all 50 state quarters, and a few random coins and stuff from around the world. I think my oldest penny is 1912. Most of my stuff is packed up though, so I can't really know what I have or don't have.

the worst helmets design to me is the Jacksonville jaguars hamlets from 1995 to 2012 because you can't see the logo vary wall

i have all 50 states and the 6 extra ones. and ill aslo state that i would much rather have a $1 bill than $1 coin, coins take up so much room in the wallet and make them fat and fall out, the bills fold up nicely with the rest of the money. it would be nice to walk around with bigger bills, but unfortanelty thats all i have and can walk around with in my wallet

- How Canada's coins will change once Prince William becomes the new King

Being deliberately pedantic here - shouldn't they have already changed for King Charles III? (*opens can of worms*)

Regardless of that though, its a subject I do find interesting. I wonder if they would put both William and Catherine on any currency, as has happened in the past (and also on postage stamps). And I presume that William's portrait will face to the left on the notes of the Pound Sterling as Charles should face to the right by tradition.

I do collect the unusual coins I get in change. Usually British dependencies (Jersey, Isle of Man, Gibraltar etc.) and Euro cents these days, but I've had the odd US and Canadian cents, and I've had one with Arabic writing on. Not sure where exactly that one originated from.

I've got quite a few of the £2 special issues - such as the Charles Darwin, Isambard Kingdom Brunel and Marconi ones. I've managed to get the 2012 Olympic Handover and 2002 Commonwealth Games coins that were pretty rare.

Cool designs wise, its mainly the £2 again, I like the 60th Anniversary of the Second World War and the Tercentenary of the Acts of Union coins. The Bicentenary of the abolition of the slave trade in the British Empire is quite a simple, yet effective design.

You can see these coins here: (scroll down for the full list)

I've also got a few of the 50p issues as well:

- The (Not-So) Great Debate: $1 Bills vs. $1 Coins and other trivial discussions

Well if it were me, I'd love to see the £1 note come back, but its just not practical, notes last a fraction of coins so it makes sense to have the £1 and that's more or less the same that can be said for the $1.

In fact I find it odd that you have both coin and note.

I have every US penny from 1900 to present.

Every one? Mint marks included? 1909-S Indian Head, 1909-S VDB Lincoln, 1914-D, 1924-D? If so, that's an extremely impressive collection. $5,000 easy in halfway-decent grades, even more if you have the more widely-known variations.

I used to dabble in coin collecting with my dad. I don't have anything extremely valuable, I concentrated more on "type collecting" - having one or a few examples of different variations of U.S. coins. My oldest coin is a U.S. large cent* from the 1820s or so, I have a lot from the 1880s-1940s.

*cents used to be roughly the size of quarters, changed to the current size in 1857.

Pictured is a large cent, current dime and cent (obviously) and a silver three-cent piece, the smallest coin the U.S. has ever produced.

I posted this in the Canadian money thread, but I'll put it here as well.

I absolutely love foreign currency, and it was one of the many highlights of my trip to Europe this summer. American money is so boring looking. I wouldn't necessarily be for switching to European like money, as it feels quite a bit cheaper than the American dollar, but it would be kind of exciting. I also like the idea of different sized bills as well. That really does make finding different bills easier.

Compared to our money, the British Pound is so much brighter and more colorful.

British-Pounds.jpg

The Euro is even more so.

Euro_banknotes.jpg

But neither compare to the Swiss franc, which can pretty much be seen from the moon

Hopefully the Euro isn't abolished, because I still have quite a bit of it left :P But hey, I guess it could be a good novelty item some day.

I have a TON of coins too, and some of them are simply fantastic looking compared to quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies.

One funny thing I encountered in Europe was the size of wallets. I wanted to get a really nice leather wallet in Italy, but I couldn't because the money holders were all too small due to Euro being shorter than American dollars.

i've always loved australian money, it's so durable, I've had numerous notes left in my pocket had them go through the washing machine, and they always come out fine.

I found a flying eagle penny in my backyard when I was a kid in central Illinois.

I hadn't thought about it in years before this thread. I thought it was 1856 until I looked it up and they only made about 1000 of those. It's in pretty bad shape but I should try to find it at my moms house anyway... Too cool not to have.

Why thank you. Glad to know we can get something right over here from time to time. ;)

I agree with you on the Swiss Franc, its nuts - especially as its a portrait note and not landscape like 99% of the other notes.

As for the Euro - I've always called it Monopoly money, and right now I think Uncle Pennybag's notes are probably worth more.

- How Canada's coins will change once Prince William becomes the new King

That's a very interesting question. I've always been wondering about the fate of the $20 bill. With the new polymer issue coming out in 2013, what would happen if the Queen would pass away in the next couple of years. Would they keep the design, replace it with the new monarch (Charles, William or whoever else), or bring in a new figure? Personally, I would prefer a new figure and not necessarily a former Prime Minister, but possibly a First Nation icon or an ordinary Canadian who did something great for the nation.

As far as the coins are concerned, I believe we should keep minting the profile of the current monarch. One thing I know is that the direction in which the profile is facing alternates everytime there is a change. So for instance the Queen's profile is looking to the right now, so the next monarch will be facing to the left.

The only really interesting coin I have is 1 Moroccan Dirham. My girlfriend got it in change and had no interest in it so she gave it to me. I couldn't identify it, so I brought it into a pawn shop that specializes in coins. I asked very unsurely, seeing as it looked so strange, "Do you think maybe you might be able to tell me where this is from?"

Guy in the store looks at it for about half a second and says "Morocco", before tossing it onto the counter.

I think it's incredible what some people know, really.

I got some Filipino paper money, a few Kuwaiti dinar (worth, on average, 3.5 times more than U.S. currency), about 600,00 Iraqi dinar (worth, on average, a metric ton less than U.S. currency), some Egyptian paper money, and I think I have a thing or two from Spain...all left over from various excursions in southwest Asia. I don't have any nice pictures of any of it to post, however.

(Oh, and yeah...abolish the U.S. penny. I've been agreeing with that sentiment for about the past eight years, now.)

I think we're going the right way with the whole color of money redesign, but it kills me that the $1 is two redesigns behind along with the underrated $2 bill. Here's how I'd change things up:

*abolish the penny

*reintroduce the half dollar, but shrink it a bit and give it a polygon border like the 20 pence coin. Keep JFK on the face, use Liberty Bell/moon image from the bicentennial dollar on the reverse.

*make the dollar coin thicker to distinguish it from the quarter, keep Eisenhower on the face, put Iwo Jima Memorial on the reverse.

*Introduce $2 coin, gold with silver border like the ?2, Teddy Roosevelt on the face, Mount Rushmore on the reverse.

*All bills use holographic ribbon, colored enlarged number on bottom right of reverse, watermark, and color shifting ink.

*$5 - just add holographic ribbon and color shifting ink.

*$10 - replace Hamilton with Woodrow Wilson, replace Treasury with Statue of Liberty, enlarged orange number on bottom right of reverse.

*$20 - add holographic ribbon, enlarge number on bottom right of reverse.

*$50 - add holographic ribbon, change tinting to red, enlarged red number on bottom right of reverse.

*$100 - change tinting to blue, use standardized enlarged number on bottom right of reverse (blue).

The half-dollar actually hasn't gone anywhere. ^_^ It's just rarely encountered.
