2012 MLB Season

I never would have thought that a trip to Boston could soothe the Angels, but there it was.

Bullpen still sucks. Every pitcher other than Weaver still sucks (although good Ervin Santana emerged for a day). But hey, a sweep is a sweep is a sweep.

The Dodgers have been awarded a waiver claim on Boston's 1B Adrian Gonzalez. Interesting to see if/how this plays out.

I would be stunned if that goes through.

Although they do need a first baseman bad. There's defensive minded middle infielders that are outhitting James Loney.

I just can't understand how a club could sign a guy to a long term deal like that and essentially admit failure over the deal on some level after two years even when the guy is producing. Right now he's fourth on the team in OPS and should be on pace to win another gold glove. He's not the problem or at least not the main one.

And now they've put in a claim for Josh Beckett. I can't wait to watch this blow up in the Dodgers faces and they're stuck battling for third in the west because they're so hampered with albatross contracts of former stars.

I don't know what the Dodgers were/are thinking with that move. I don't think this is a team that's in tremendous need of another starter, but more importantly Beckett's just been flat out awful both on the field and probably in the clubhouse as well.

I would hold onto Gonzalez if I were the Red Sox, or at least until the end of the year, just to get better trade value for him if no other reason. But Beckett's a guy they have to get rid of if given the opportunity.

Why are the Dodgers the only team associated with significant waiver wire claims?

It's not so much the Dodgers wanting these players, but blocking the teams ahead of them in the standings from claiming these players. The Giants could use an Adrian Gonzalez. The Nationals may be in the market for a proven SP like Beckett.

Boston can still pull these players off waivers if they can't come to a trade agreement with the Dodgers. Or the Red Sox can just let the Dodgers have these players and make them pay their full salary.

The Padres claiming Randy Myers in 1998 (to keep the Braves from getting him) killed their wallet. I think they wound up paying like $10-11 million/season for the next two years, even though Myers didn't pitch in 1999 or 2000.

That's not what they're doing. They're ridding themselves of people who have openly or privately complained about Valentine/Management. First it was Youkilis, then it was Shoppach (who sent the text that initiated all of this), then it was their pitching coach (who never saw eye to eye with Bobby) and now it's Adrian (who's phone was used for Shoppach's text). This management team went from being godsends to ineptitude in the matter of five years. They're petty, ignorant, and just flat out pathetic. They'll fire Liverpool's manager because they "expect better" and "won't tolerate the losing atmosphere" and then turn around the next day and give Bobby V a vote of confidence. LOL.

You clearly haven't watched Beckett the past two years.

As for the deal, I've also heard Crawford involved. At first, I hate the thought of getting rid of Adrian, but if it rids us of Crawford and Beckett I'm willing to trade the green monster too. Never have I been more excited during a losing season than at the prospect of Beckett getting shipped out of town.

Not gonna lie.

As much as I would love to see Adrian Gonzalez's lethal bat get out of the AL East, especially since he's back to being Adrian Gonzalez at the plate...

I'm loving his hissy fit in Boston. Talk about a match made in Hell.

I agree too; With Adrian Gonzalez gone, the Rays are so dominating Boston especially with their recent winning streak. (dance)

"The Dodgers and Red Sox are closing in on a deal to send Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford and Nick Punto to Los Angeles, though a few hurdles remain before it's official, multiple baseball sources said Friday." - ESPN Boston

The Red Sox would be shedding $262.5 million in salaries in this possible deal. That has got to be a record amount.

Ah okay, I seem to to understand it a bit better. Thanks Hedley and speedy.

Was it before the 2011 season, that Boston was a favorite to win the World Series? Fast forward to 2012, they're getting rid of the players that Boston spent millions to them. As a Rays fan, this is why the Rays are glad not to keep Crawford and used that saved money for hidden gems and future draft picks.

Beckett is a 10/5 guy, but he must want to get out of BOS.

Also, Justin Upton was claimed off waivers from an unnamed team.

If you really want to bring the Rays back to this thread, lemme throw this little nugget:

When Longoria has not been on the DL, the Rays are 29-11. That's a 117 win team over 162 games.

When Longoria was on the DL, the Rays were 41-44. That's a 78 win team over 162 games.

Now try and tell me Evan Longoria, as good a player as he is, is that good? I don't want to discredit Longo, or the Rays starting staff which is legit good, but something doesn't jive there, at all.
