Of all the NL teams to have visited Yankee Stadium since interleague play began, the one team that hadn't made the trip (amazingly enough) had been the Dodgers.

As a further reward, Vin Scully is going to make the trip for that series.

He better. He's been with the team since before they moved to Los Angeles.

My Philadelphia Phillies are finally playing to potential. And the Cards and Buccos stink! They are 3 outs away from sweeping the Marlins and then have 4 against the Astros and 3 against the Mets. By the end of tonight the Phillies could be 3 games back. Watch out other playoff teams! If the Phils are hot, they are suddenly a world series contender.

Brewers are also back at .500 on the heels of an almost-identical run.

What the hell does this say about the parity-ridden MLB we're seeing today? Phillies traded away Hunter Pence and Joe Blanton, and the Brewers traded Greinke, and yet both teams have played much better ever since. And with 20 games left, both teams are squarely in the wild card race.

I'm not sure why that's surprising - Joe Blanton just was never good, and Hunter Pence is a butcher in right field and while he has a lot of talent, was having a disappointing season at the plate. A lot of that was because he was batting cleanup while Ryan Howard was out, but he just couldn't step up.

They're doing well because Utley and Howard are back so everyone else can bat where they belong, callups Frandson and Domonic Brown are playing well (Frandson especially), and Eric Kratz has played out of his mind subbing for Carlos Ruiz. Kratz is one of those 32-year-old rookie type guys who never did anything before this year.

Kyle Kendrick has pitched like an actual major leaguer after getting reamed out last month, Halladay is still getting better after having injury issues all season, and a couple of call-ups are contributing to the bullpen, which absolutely sucked ass for most of the season.

I had the Phillies in the World Series, so I'm not terribly surprised, at least on the pitching side of things. I guess I'm caught off guard by the fact that they've had a relatively weak offense all season, and, whether he was a disappointment or not, you generally don't get better offensively by trading Hunter Pence. Victorino, probably because he was fricken' terrible. Pence, at least, still had a .783 OPS, which is bad by his standards, but would seemingly make the Phils offense better.

And this run has all been without Ruiz. Kratz has stepped up in rather unimaginable ways to fill the void, because Ruiz was probably the best catcher in baseball prior to the injury.

All in all, the plot thickens in the NL. At least I can enjoy that race.

For all the talk of the Phils and Brewers, it's a shame that the Pirates are a total non-factor in that race, even though they're still 1/2 game ahead of those two teams.

Absolute free-fall, 40 games later than last season's. The stigma of 20 straight losing seasons is likely going to persist, and that really sucks.

Yankees escaped by the skin, of the skin of their teeth tonight. That was truly impossible to watch tonight.

That's not good because Red Sox at this point are just one of those teams that's simply going through the motions of being a major league team. They've been playing .300 baseball since August.

0-13 in tonight's game with runners in scoring position. Any other AL team but the Red Sox and I think the Yankees would have lost easily. Its long ball or die in terms of scoring runs and they have no starting pitching and as a result a depleted bullpen.

1-25 in this series against the Red Sox, and the Yankees are 36-179 with RISP going back a good while.

Outside of a nice stretch in late June and July, the Yankees have been a trainwreck with RISP all season. It's one thing to thrive mainly because of the longball, but being bad at fundamental baseball is never a recipe for any kind of success against the best teams in the league.

Giants win, Dodgers lose. We're up 7 in the division and the magic number now sits at (I think) 12. Thanks again, Boston!

Bizarre season series between the Angels and A's.

Angels went 6-3 in Oakland, including a sweep last week. The A's are 7-2 in Anaheim, and have a chance for a four game sweep tomorrow. This would also be the second four-game home sweep of the Angels in less than a month, both of them to teams in direct Wild Card competition with them.

---

On that related note, the two teams of destiny in the AL this year, the A's and O's, meet for three games this weekend in Oakland. The gravity of two teams like that meeting might just cause MLB to implode upon itself.

How bad are the Mets?

They're tied for 3rd w/ the Rockies for most wins (4) @ Citi Field after the All-Star Break. The Nats have 6 and the Braves have 5. You can't make it up.

You guys did finally get that illusive no-hitter. Therefore, the season must be considered a success, for Mets standards.

They're the NL version of the Red Sox.

Another team that's completely given up on the year and is simply going through the motions of showing up and taking the field every day. At least Met fans are smart enough not to show up to see that train wreck though. Fenway is still a packed house every night.
