Ugh, second straight day Giants blow a huge early lead. Were now playing major league teams, not AA(Astros) or AAA(Cubs). Just can't keep blowing leads like that.

Unbelievable though, they steal it in 10!

You're only commenting on it because barely above average Rays teams have been beneficiaries in both years.

Watching a $200M team go 1-4 to start the most important 10 game stretch of the season (and they were lucky as hell to win the one game they did), go 4-10 over their last 14, and 19-25 since July 18. This is probably the most gutless, pathetic Yankees team I have ever watched.

Only reason they aren't the most pathetic team I've ever watched, in general, is because I still remember many times when the Bucs lost over 10 games and when the Lightning were accomplishing the amazing task of losing 50 games a year during the W-L-T-OTL era. Then again, most of those teams were expected to suck, so it was kinda different to watch.

You're a Rays fan. It's by association. I'm a little skeptical you could care so much about the (admittedly) overhyped Yankees-Red Sox rivalry otherwise.

There are far too many things I'm trying to figure out here. From the start of the "Rays" era until July 21, 2011, the Yankees were 17-15 at Tropicana Field. That's pretty stellar. Since then, they are a fricken' abysmal 1-11, nearly all 11 of those losses being miserable, easily-could've-won type games. If you don't believe me - every single game has had a final score margin of no more than three runs.

I had a soundbite of Gary Thorne calling the game winning hit in Game 162 last year in Baltimore, knocking Boston out of the playoffs. I officially erased that today - I can't delight in the Red Sox great collapse of 2011 when the Yankees have now done the same thing in 2012. At least there's still a chance for the Yankees to turn things around, but I'm not exactly optimistic about that happening at this point in time.

And, please, I only slightly exaggerated the quality of the Rays from 2011 and 2012. Neither team is bad, but they are extremely one-dimensional, and while the rhetoric will always be how their starting pitching can shut down any lineup, it's also true that only moderately good starting pitching is capable of shutting that weak O down in high stakes games. The Texas Rangers did just that the past two years.

Don't take offense to that, though. I may not think all that highly of the Rays, but the Yankees are atrocious compared to them.

So if someone would've told me that at the beginning of September that the Yankees would have the same record as the A's, I would've asked who their crack dealer was. Even if Oakland falls off completely from here on out, this season has been a huge success for them.

The only thing I've been surprised about with Oakland is that they've been able to maintain this pace without adding anybody. I really felt like they were going to have to add at least one more bat if they were going to be serious and that may still wind up being the case as we still have a month to go. But so far it hasn't been true and they've been about as good as any team in baseball in the second half.

But I remember saying right after the All-Star break that I thought this was a really good team and not just some .500 squad that got hot. Looking at their stats, Earl Weaver would be proud.

Are the Yankees doing their best impression of the 2011 Red Sox? -____________________-

Is it just me or are the Yankees starting to collapse in the AL East?

They've been collapsing since July. Yankees couldn't score in a hentai with RISP, plenty of injuries, the bullpen falters etc. I've pushed the panic button in August.

The Yankees scored five runs, all with two outs, to turn a 6-1 deficit into a 6-6 game, in the 8th inning of the first game of their enormous series against the Orioles.

And then the bullpen gives it all back with three home runs in the bottom half of the inning, and the Orioles are back tied for first after that. You wonder how the Yankees have blown a 10 game lead, it's because when the offense is going good, the pitching staff implodes. When the staff is going good, the offense can't buy a goddamn hit.

And they've allowed Mark Reynolds to hit 2 home runs in a game against them THREE TIMES in the past SIX days.

It'll be a miracle for the Yankees to reach the playoffs at this point. Rejoice, Yankee haters. And feel free to use me as your pinata.

I want to trust the O's but can't. I sure hope they pull it off though.

In the first half of the season I thought they were doing it with smoke and mirrors.

But they actually look like a very solid baseball team now. The big key for them has been their bullpen. Five guys with 50+ innings out of the pen all with ERA's under 3. Their closer Jim Johnson has probably been the worst of the bunch and nobody is arguing Jim Johnson shouldn't be a major league closer. That's just how good the Orioles bullpen has been.

Any game this team is in they can win and if you look at their record in close games it shows. The only thing I don't like about this team is the offense which is long ball or die. They really don't have any other way of beating you outside of hitting home runs. If there's a power outage in Baltimore they could go into a tailspin.
