Seattle Mariners: A modern classic

It's especially good when you consider the identity that preceded it. "M's" slapped on a baseball? Really?? The older trident was a good concept, but I'd say it didn't look that great; and there was some kind of bad luck association with the trident pointing down, right?

I love the color scheme, but I really think that the Trident M is way more inspired than the baseball-compass.

I'd love for them to keep the colors but work in the Trident again. I saw someone walking around in a navy cap with a silver trident M outlined in teal, and it looked great. Not sure if it was a custom job for a club team or if it was a licensed fashion cap.

I'll disagree with you on this. I hate when teams try and force an old look into their current look that looks good. I'm sorry, but the Brewers and their "need" to satisfy the ball in glove crowd, just makes them look bad and kills their brand and identity. You make an identity by keeping to standards. It's why teams like the Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, Tigers work. Sure they've had throwbacks, but you know who they are when they step on the field. The Mariners have become this with the current look, and the Braves and the Twins are in the category. The difference though, is that the Mariners have nice looking alternates and the Braves and Twins are bad!

Who else, upon seeing these images, realized you'd completely forgotten that Alex Rodriguez was originally a longtime Mariner??

I agree that forcing one era into another doesn't work. That's not what I'm advocating, but I see where some might think that's the case since I would keep the current color scheme. I don't want the trident cap with the current uniform, I want a whole re-design.

The Mariners certainly have a great look that has stood the test of time, however I definitely would not mention them in the same breath as the Yankees, Dodgers, Red Sox, or even Braves. It's a nice look, but there's nothing about it that jumps out at you as instantly recognizable to the average person (my opinion at least.) The font isn't really unique, the compass-ball is a nice mark but isn't nearly as recognized as those other teams' marks, and let's face it - being in Seattle puts them at a disadvantage as far as gaining that kind of status.

I think the Trident M is unique enough and timeless enough that it could eventually make it to the second-tier of recognizability (nothing anyone can do right now will have them in the Yankees class any time soon) if they stuck with it long enough, which they've proven they are capable of doing with a nice set.

My only real complaint is with the color scheme...I've often thought about ways to incorporate a little bit of Light Blue in order to brighten up the Navy and Northwest Green:

I didn't even realize that they had light blue in their current color scheme (unless this is just something of your own creation and not the official colors of the Ms).

Actually, if the green on the uniforms looked closer to this, they'd be perfect, no light blue needed.

They don't have light blue. This is a concept of his.

My own creation...I took the current colors and added Light Blue.

How could you forget? The biggest moment in Mariners history, the first person to greet Junior at the plate was A-Rod

I love the trident too. Brilliant concept and looks sharp. BUT, the bad luck thing is always hanging over head. As much as I love it, if it truly is a symbol of bad luck, I'd say stay away.

Or, maybe they could get a "blessing" from a skipper or something if that's part of the fishing culture. Sig Hansen anyone?

Ditto. I've never liked the "S compass" logo and thought they should've tried to bring the old "M trident" back with some updates. And really, there'd be no better time than now, what with other teams doing something similar (Toronto, Baltimore) with bringing back past looks but updated.

If I had to tweak something, I'd either use the number/NOB font from this jersey on their whole set

The-Office-gifs-the-office-14948948-240-196.gif

That alternate is a terrible jersey just because that font is just so egregiously terrible.

Agreed. I absolutely HATE the number font that they only use on the navy alts. That's the only thing preventing the M's set from being absolutely perfect.

I believe that jersey is actually black. That, or it was purposely made in a much, much darker navy than the other Mariners alts. I remember seeing them wearing that on TV, and the jersey was much darker than the dark navy cap they wear. Normally, teams with the dark navy cap have navy jerseys which are slightly lighter than the cap. Hell, on this jersey, the navy outline even seems to be a different shade than the jersey.

Does anyone have this jersey or has seen it close up to confirm if it is navy or black?

It's a very dark navy otherwise known as "Astro navy," after the Astros' dark navy alts from the '90s. That jersey would look great as the road alt, much better than the current sans-piping jersey with the uni number below the script and the crazy number font.

Sidenotes about the M's so far this year: was disappointed not to see them in teal for the home opener Friday night (those are still being worn for all Monday and Friday home games, right?) I'm also excited to see the teal bills back in action, and if they could wear those even just a few times with the regular home whites, I would be one happy camper.

One last thought, I wonder if I am in the minority here: I would also love to see the silver bill w/compass alternate caps brought back in some capacity, I always liked them.

From San Berdoo to Kalamazoo.
