Championships/Seasons That Came Down To A Single Play

Was just chatting with a friend about this and thought it would be good forum fodder.

What championships, or entire seasons, do you remember that came down to one single play?

For me, two scenarios come to mind - both football. Super Bowl XXXIV - Rams versus Titans. The last minute drive by Tennessee that fell a yard short. A season lost in 36 inches.

The other is Nebraska's miracle catch against Missouri in 1997. It wasn't for the national title, but without that win Nebraska doesn't finish undefeated and Michigan likely wins the 1997 title outright in the Rose Bowl against Washington State.

Derek Fisher's .4 remaining buzzer beater in game 5 of the 04 WCF. Lakers would win the series, but lose in the finals.

Horry's game winning 3 in the 02 WCF saved the series for the Lakers who went on to win the title.

2005 National Title game, Vince Young's TD run on 4th down with 19 seconds left in the game to win the Longhorns the title.

And of course the infamous 2003 Cardinals win over the Vikings to eliminate them from the postseaon. Cardinals were 3-12 entering the game and the Vikings, who had started 6-0, limped to the gate. Then this happened, and Vikings fans all vomited simultaneously.

Thank you for posting that Lights Out. However, I believe that Doug Christie got the foul after that play. Still though, if the foul is correctly gets called on Kobe, then the Kings probably wouldve taken the lead on the free throws.

Hail Flutie didn't determine the outcome of that season, though. If you want a Miami example, look no further than the 1987 Fiesta Bowl and Pete Giftopoulos.

That or the 2003 Fiesta Bowl when the Canes got hosed against Ohio State.

Mighty Ducks of Anaheim (CHL - 2018 Orr Cup Champions) Chicago Rivermen (UBA/WBL - 2014, 2015, 2017 Intercontinental Cup Champions)

King's Own Hexham FC (BIP - 2022 Saint's Cup Champions) Portland Explorers (EFL - Elite Bowl XIX Champions) Real San Diego (UPL) Red Bull Seattle (ULL - 2018, 2019, 2020 Gait Cup Champions) Vancouver Huskies (CL)

I know we're getting a little off kilter here with moments that culminated in championships or seasons or whatever, but since the boundaries are loose, I'm going to run with it.

Who can forget this play from last year?

This may or may not have late-season implications but here it is again anyway.

Manchester City, 2012

Arsenal, 1989

Those are two that immediately come to mind -- almost the last action of the match for City and pretty much the last action for Arsenal, both needing a goal to win the league.

/It'd be poor IMO to post videos from knockout tournaments as they virtually all have to come down to one play assuming the final is close.

Tennessee won the 1998 National Championship against Florida State in the Fiesta Bowl. It was a close game and FSU also came back to win.

But a few months earlier, Tennessee barely escaped another Florida team: the Gators. In an overtime thriller, UF missed their last field goal giving the Vols the win. If Spurrier had won, Tennessee likely falls out of the title conversation and we could have seen a Florida State-Kansas State national championship.

I still try to forget not only that play, but that whole last drive. :angered:

So many championship football games are won/lost on field goals made or missed. Falcons/Vikings OT for NFC championship in 1999 season comes to mind, as does the Hartley kick in OT which won the NFC for the Saints a few years back.

It is what it is.
