Here's the ever-phlegmatic Joe Buck dropping by the Blues booth to call part of the second period. Joe Buck barely knows hockey. Joe Buck doesn't know the names of half the Kings. Joe Buck is universally agreed to suck at football and baseball. And, in fact, he kind of sucks at this, too.

And yet...

...he still sounds better at this than one third of the league. Jesus Christ.

Holy crap that was bad, especially the power play goal. "...here is a...goal scored by...44..."

If the NHL on FOX returned to a national level, we're doomed on play-by-play.

Leafs put on a show at home tonight. Those highlights were spectacular.

Greg Zanon tries to get the puck out from behind the net, it hit the referee's skate and was picked up by Kyle Chipchura, who passed it to Good Guy Shane Doan who put it in for the OT winner.

Tonight just reaffirmed why its hard to really get into the Sharks. They'll play great for a stretch, but deep down you know it's just going to be a fleeting stretch.

I will disagree with you only slightly and agree with the end.

Joe Buck is the most technically sound broadcaster on television. His talent to describe what is going on concisely and eloquently is amazing. What he's saying is simple, but his ability to do it is one of the best. The problem with Joe is the fact that he is the most technically sound broadcaster right now. He's great, but he's almost too calm and robotic. What Joe lacks is the ability to blend his excellent syntax with the emotion and height of the moment. He's the yin to Gus Johnson's yang.

As far as his hockey broadcasting, it just furthers my idea that he is just a natural talent at calling sports. That was him just strolling by the booth and calling a hockey game with the basic knowledge of being a season ticket holder. If you gave him the time, preparation and focus for the game as an actual job, I guarantee he could handle it and be the lead broadcaster in hockey or any sport. He would be smooth, measured, and composed, but you would never get a DRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE from him.

Now, let me clarify, Joe Buck is far from my favorite broadcaster and if I had to choose someone to broadcast to communicate the game and entertain me, it wouldn't be Joe. But again, he is the most technically sound broadcaster in sports. He didn't deserve his job when he originally got it. He got that because of his dad. But he's earned it over time.

Joe Buck would be better if he didn't sound so put out by having to watch games and describe them. He's past calm and into inconvenienced. He practically admitted as much once. Personally, I think the best national broadcaster at anything is Kevin Harlan on TNT. Polished professional who still manages timely enthusiasm. Yeah, you could argue that he's basically a professional Marv Albert impersonator, but Marv Albert is the best there ever was at calling basketball, so it's really not a bad idea!

Something that bothers me in my Gamecentering is hearing Canadian broadcasters who insist on not only failing to pronounce foreign names correctly, but actively crap all over the concept of pronouncing foreign names correctly. The way they steamroll vowel sounds is like the hoser equivalent of saying "I el-don'to el-wanto an el-taco." Like, yo dudes, you're the ones who give us crap about not being inclusive and pluralist enough, and yada yada yada Hockey Night In Canada in Punjabi, but how many more times do I have to hear about that great goal from "Raddim Verbatta"? Come on, guys, I don't need this dramma.

Again, Buck is the most technically sound, but yeah, I need some energy. I do enjoy Harlan a lot. Always confused me when I first started listening to basketball, because I thought Marv Albert did every game every night, but Harlan is a real pro.

Re: Canadians - It bugged me to no freaking end when Jim Hughson was the PBP on the EA NHL games, because it was when the Ducks had "EEL-YA BREEZE-GUHLOV" Instead of "Ill-ya Brizz-galov" or "TEE-MU SEH-LAH-NEE" instead of "Tay-mu Se-law-nee"

"Seh-law-nee" isn't even the proper pronunciation of his name. The E at the end is silent. "Seh-lahn."

Also, "Dustin Bufflin" is one of the great travesties in thenhistory of oral communication.

You mean "Bye-foog-lee-en"?

Probably helps that the Rangers and Beej dress practically the same

And Kramerica, Ducks? Biggest game of the young season for the Ducks tomorrow in Chicago. Top 2 in the West. Pretty excited. Probably bigger for the Ducks than the Hawks (road game, need it with a Detroit/Nashville back to back this weekend, prove theyre really legit.)

Am I coming to the realization that I made that post without thinking it entirely through?

Sure, but it's too late to fix that one now. As far as Anaheim goes, I remember how last season there were comparisons with '10-'11 NJD with the miserable start, spirited rally to try and get back in the race, and finally ceding late in the race. The comps. continue into this year.

The name I understand least in the NHL is Toews.

How do they gets Taves out of that it looks like it should be pronounced Toes.

Same way they get "Tims" out of "Thames"...or worse yet, "Coke-lee" out of "Colclough" (Pittsburghers should remember that second one).

Which is to say...I don't know.

*Disclaimer: I am not an authoritative expert on stuff...I just do a lot of reading and research and keep in close connect with a bunch of people who are authoritative experts on stuff. 😁

You would know the only night the wife has the DVR a blazing on both receivers is the night the Jackets decide to kick ass....

Don't validate those awful DirecTV commercials, man.
