2015 NFL Offseason

Redskins sign former Seahawks safety Jeron Johnson.

I've said it once and I'll say it again... The Redskins are simply playing free agency smart and winning (on the defensive side of course). All 5 free agency signings have been on defense.

DE Ricky Jean Francois

DT Stephen Paea

DT Terrance Knighton

CB Chris Culliver

S Jeron Johnson

They are spending money wisely instead of loading all their money into one player's contract like Dan Snyder is prone to doing.

Crazy what happens when you have an actual general manager.

This can't be real: Chris Borland is retiring after one year. Wishing him luck in his retirement.

Last place NFC West, here we come!

This story is much bigger than the team from which he retired. This may be a key domino in the NFL making drastic changes and/or its downfall.

Read something interesting that compared football's future to the Armed Forces: Most parents won't want their kids to participate. There's always going to be players - it's too popular and the game is, at its most fundamental, a good experience for those involved (I believe, anyway). Team sports are important and the violence associated can be a productive outlet if channeled and taught properly.

BUT there's going to be more of these every year at all levels of the game. The NFL, if it had any real balls, would have October be Concussion Awareness Month, encouraging football players of all ages to be transparent with their coaches and trainers, and take care of their brains with as much respect as their knees, shoulders, etc. Even to the point of pushing a mentality of knowing when to walk away.

For most sports, especially hockey and football, that flies in the face of the Warrior mentality of playing through pain and knowingly sacrificing in the name of potential victory. Kids are taught to suck it up and "be a man," all that other macho bullcrap. All that testosterone-fueled garbage needs to change. "Being a man" is what Chris Borland did, by not letting the game be bigger than his life, and not letting the money wane his decision. Somebody may want to tell that to Chris Conte, who will probably endure another 4 or 5 concussions in Tampa Bay this season and freely admits he doesn't care about his body.

Maybe Austin Collie should give him a call.

I'm not sure what the NFL could do at this point to make the game that much more safe. It is an inherently dangerous sport. Period. Sure you could penalize guys for going for the head, or hitting defenseless receivers, cut down on kickoffs and it may help some. But how are you going to stop players on the line of scrimmage from bumping heads?

As for football's downfall, maybe we will look back at this as the start, but any chance of football being eliminated from the American landscape is still decades away.

I have no doubt though there will be more stories like this. These health risks weren't widely known going as far back as even 10 years ago and the risks are scary. Unless your going to be in complete denial about it, I don't see how that couldn't effect someone's career decision making.

ProFootballTalk is the one that spewed the garbage. It's amazing how some people are trying to make Borland the villain in this. The man a conscious decision, while he still could, to remove himself from a GAME and head off to the second page of his life. Most players don't have that opportunity.

I don't think you'll see a lot of Borlands (one year) but maybe guys playing out their first contract.

I tend to agree that there is no way to make it appreciably safer without making it flag football. I read once (I wish I could remember where) that it may not be the hits to the head that matter as much as those "neck-snapping" tackles; clean tackles at the waist that cause a very quick neck extension (could not find good photo or video). Those are not going anywhere.

Is football done? Not anytime soon. But I think you'll see an even more pronounced economic shift; few middle class and wealthier kids will be playing.

Trent Richardson gets a shot in Oakland.

lols... & guy guarantees that team won't cut him? Uh huh...

$5 says he winds up on at least 2 different teams before pre season ends

No he is a perfect Raider, a player that has failed time and time again and is on his last chance in the league.
