You make me out to be out alone on some lunatic fringe...

You're certainly not alone in your passion for the idea of an NHL franchise returning to Hartford. Further, while we've engaged in some spirited debate on the topic, I can assure you that you don't strike me as being a member of the "lunatic fringe" when it comes to discussing the matter. Trust me, I know some of said "lunatic fringe"... hell, I have family who are card-carrying members. You, sir, are the very definition of erudition and decorum compared to the Bring Back the Whalers "lunatic fringe".

Frankly, as someone who grew up rooting for the Whalers, part of me hopes that your passion for the idea of Whalers 2.0 is borne out of the fact that you're a multibillionaire who is systematically - and, heretofore, secretly - putting plans together to bring an NHL franchise back to Hartford.

Now Whalers 2.0 is going to represent Southern New England as well as Hartford?

I've said before that the Springfield-Hartford-New Haven corridor gives you a population roughly equivalent to that of Raleigh-Durham. Yes, you'll share that with Boston and New York, but Raleigh is sharing their population with Buffalo transplants, Pittsburgh transplants, and Doesn't Give A Jack About Hockey In The First Place. I think a new Whalers team could siphon off some of those fans, especially on the Rangers side.

I'm also presuming that they'd get CSN New England (the Whalers' old SportsChannel New England) on board and share the entirety of New England-minus-Fairfield (which I know doesn't get CSNNE and NESN) with the Bruins: Whalers can show games in Boston, Bruins can show games in Hartford -- same reciprocity as the two Alberta teams, and I'd expect the same for the Canadiens and Nordiques if that ever comes together.

Hockey has seen a lot of grassroots development in Connecticut since the Whalers left and the brand seems to become more beloved every year, especially with Winnipeg getting the Jets back. You make me out to be out alone on some lunatic fringe, but I know there are people in New England who are far more passionate and informed about this than I am. I'm just some guy throwing some possibilities out in the face of the miserable business failure the Whalers organization has become in the New South suburban hell they're in now.

Agreed 100%. It's a more traditional hockey market. People genuinely care about the game. In Raleigh, it seemed they were just excited at first, then i died off, then got excited when they reached the '02 finals, then it died off again, then got excited when they won the cup in '06, and it's been dull ever since. That's not to say Hartford would support a crappy team year in and year out, but I think it would be far more successful in more ways than one than it is in Carolina.

In a way, I applaud Bettman for going all out in attempting to get the NHL to catch on in the south, but not all markets will work and the bleeding has to stop at some point. It's worked in L.A., Anaheim, San Jose, Dallas and Tampa Bay; but has failed in Phoenix, Miami and Atlanta; and looks to be on the fringe in Carolina. If you don't get sellout after sellout after getting to a final and winning a cup within 10 years, it's a fail IMO.

More Jackets fans were cheering about the win than there were Panthers fans. It's like the NHL is playing exhibition games in Somalia, even then there would be a larger turnout.

New York Post Hockey Coot Larry Brokks, who does tend to know people who know things, says the Coyotes' latest financial savior appears to be falling through, leaving IceArizona with their team bought on payday loans. Here We Go Again.

*sad trombone*

So...the Coyotes are back in play (were they ever not though?)

The Panthers are managing to prove that they are, in fact, the least relevant team in sports.

The Hurricanes are now getting dangerously close to Coyotes territory if they're not there already.

Let's take bets on which train derails first.

Slap Shots has been told the current ownership has directed GM Don Maloney to shed payroll … which would mean stripping the club with the league’s third-lowest payroll into a bare-bones operation.

I want an Antoine Vermette for Christmas. Toews-Richards-Vermette-Kruger down the middle MAKE IT WORK

Jack Edwards was about to cut a promo on how the Coyotes' arena is in a terrible location far away from people who can't just make a day out of it like a Cardinals game, but then he had to stop because Marchand was about to score. Bruins up 5-1 after two. Couple more losses like this and the salary shedding should really begin.

The Panthers had a pregame video that mocked the snowstorm in Buffalo, you know, the one that killed people. Nice ship you're running. Hope it sinks, you pricks.

The funny thing is that there were probably more people at the blizzard game against San Jose than there were in Sunrise tonight.

There was an article today about how the flyers are too good to be the worst, so Hextall should trade anyone decent for prospects and essentially tank like their tenants the Sixers are doing.

I'm not totally sure I follow the logic there, but I conceded years ago that the Flyers are a logic-free zone. They shouldn't be as bad as they are, though. I hope they pass the Rangers. GOD, WHAT A BORING TEAM, THE RANGERS. Everything they do is just a big MEH.

They need more muckers and grinders because they do.

The funny thing is that there were probably more people at the blizzard game against San Jose than there were in Sunrise tonight.

Even the GM doesn't watch the games:

“People died in that storm,” Pegula, a Florida resident, told Panthers General Manager Dale Tallon during a press-box conversation held within earshot of Miami Herald reporter George Richards. “That’s not funny.”
Tallon apologized, according to Richards. Tallon told Pegula and Sabres GM Tim Murray, who was also in the conversation, he didn’t see the video but was sorry the organization created it.
“I can’t comment on it because I haven’t seen it and don’t really know what’s in it,” Tallon told the Herald. “But if they’re upset, rightfully so.”

8,500 in Florida for that game versus about 6,200 for Sabres-Sharks in the middle of a historic snowstorm. Pretty close.
