NHL Anti-Thread: Bad Business Decision Aggregator

Wow, that's scummy. And given that the NHL would sooner allow a team to move to Mars than Hamilton, he's not just malicious, he's dumb. I like people who are malicious, and I like people who are dumb, but I never like anyone who's malicious and dumb.

Wait, he actually wants to move the Oilers to Hamilton? They're building a new arena in downtown Edmonton right now, and it sure as hell ain't for the Oil Kings.

Hulsizer is gonna try to fax a contract to Minnesota but it's just gonna send sc49erfan15's avatar a hundred times.

Okay, I had to look up his avatar, but I laughed for a solid minute afterwards. Good work.

Did you see the thread in the logo folder? It happened to some guy here.

Hoe did John Tavares not get the MVP yesterday, the NHL ASG is now a total joke and the game was unwatchable

You were outraged enough about this to post it in two threads.

If you cared this much about the All-Star game MVP you could've twitter voted for Tavares as many times as you wanted.

Speaking of, NBCSN sent their NHL studio crew to their Super Bowl set in downtown Phoenix outside US Airways Center.

A lot of dumb things in that, and whatever else you want to pull out of it.

Plan B for NHL Expansion?

http://www.si.com/nhl/2015/01/27/nhl-expansion-seattle-milwaukee-rangers-islanders-rivalry

As reported on Monday night in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Wisconsin governor Scott Walker is expected to announce on Tuesday morning a financing plan that includes bond sales to help build a multipurpose arena in downtown Milwaukee.

And that’s where this becomes an item of interest for hockey fans, particularly those who are hoping for an NHL expansion team in Seattle. That city’s hopes rest entirely on the construction of its own new downtown arena, but the deal to make that happen is dependent on the ability of developer Chris Hansen to land a relocated NBA franchise. The Bucks were seen not just as his best option, but also as maybe—in the wake of his failed bid last year to lure the Sacramento Kings north—his only hope. Now that the future of the Bucks is secure, the dream of a new arena in Seattle is officially on life support.

And with no new arena, there’s no chance for an NHL team. It’s that simple.

But with one window closing, could another open? Would a new multipurpose facility in a major city with a hockey background give the league a fresh option for western expansion?

Maybe.

Milwaukee fits a need geographically, and could quickly market rivalries with NHL teams in Chicago, Minnesota and St. Louis. The hockey culture is certainly in place. The six-time national champion Wisconsin Badgers have a massive following in the state, and the AHL Milwaukee Admirals have been a fairly consistent draw. Although attendance has been sluggish this season, averaging around 4,500 per game, there was a time when the Admirals routinely attracted upwards of 9,000 fans to the Bradley Center for IHL games.

So Milwaukee still appears to be a long shot. But here’s the thing: Big plans lead to big thinking. And plans don’t get much bigger than a half a billion dollars committed to a downtown arena in a major American city. With dates to fill and debt to service, a second anchor tenant will get serious consideration.

Don’t rule out the NHL in the Badger State just yet.

IMO, I dunno. I could see it happen but something tells me that the NHL wouldn't go for it. Although, i wouldn't be against it either, but hey, its speculation...

Scott Walker promised $220 million to the new arena about two breaths after he announced his plan to cut $300 million in funding to the University of Wisconsin system. I hope Rocky Wirtz calls territorial rights for that alone.

NHL Milwaukee isn't happening unless the Bucks move, and the new arena is based entirely on the Bucks staying and will therefore likely be basketball-centric. I wouldn't be surprised if the Admirals get bumped to the MECCA when the new taxpayer-funded palace for a basketball team that hasn't been relevant in 45 years opens for business.

Oh, and all media events for the Super Bowl are being held in Phoenix (including today's media day at US Airways Arena instead of the Jobberdome), and ESPN is basing all of their Super Bowl activity out of Scottsdale. GOOD JORB, GLENDALE.

I think they'd get good support. It would be really exciting to watch hockey grow more in southeastern Wisconsin at all levels. Milwaukee would be far and away the smallest four-sport town, but Wisconsin is so passionate about sports that they could make it work.

I always keep circling back to how spectacular a Blackhawks-Predators rivalry would be if the Perds' old southeastern-Wisconsin-based ownership had put its NHL team in southeastern Wisconsin (and stuffed its AHL affiliate in Nashville, or not, idgaf). Kane and Hossa snatching Game 5 of the 2010 first round against Nashville? A game I'll remember fondly. Kane and Hossa snatching Game 5 of the 2010 first round against Milwaukee? Instant classic for us, a wound that never heals for them. It really would have made so much sense. Hey, you'd even maintain the "it's fun to go to bars there" aspect of it!

I know they're passionate, but the NHL team would be by far the fourth man in town, if not further down the totem pole, because I'm sure there's quite a few Chicago sports fans as well. But they do support the Admirals very well.

I would do it. It's a better market than at least a quarter of the league now, and obviously better than Vegas and at the moment, Seattle.

Would Milwaukee even be considered a 4 sport town? People sort of give them the Packers, but that's almost two hours away. I don't doubt that most Milwuakeeans are also Packers fans, but I've always thought of it more as Wisconsin's team than anything.

If I'm reading the pulse of Milwaukee like I think I am I think the potential NHL team would instantly be more popular than the Bucks simply by not having a history of angering the city. So they'd be second behind the Brewers, which is fine because they play in different seasons.

The Packers' radio flagship is and has always been WTMJ Milwaukee. In terms of corporate support, the Packers rely heavily on Milwaukee, and maintain a separate season ticket base for the vestigial County Stadium slate. (As I understand it, those crowds are much more lively, while the old-line Green Bay season ticketholders are cranky old people from Wausau who passive-aggressively grumble "some of us are trying to see" if something compels you to get up out of your seat.) So yeah, I think the Packers definitely put a strain on the market as far as a fourth pro team goes.

Apparently it is now Puck Daddy's (or at least Ryan Lambert's) editorial policy to dare not speak the name of the Chicago Blackhawks:

DiKbxrU.jpg

Should be interesting to see whether Deadspin will carry a torch of their own now as well. Or it could just be Lambert being his usual troll self. I mean, the premise of the column I took that from was basically "will the Jets blow their playoff spot? Probably not, but boy, it sure makes you think."
