NHL Anti-Thread: Bad Business Decision Aggregator

Per hockeydb the old IHL Las Vegas Thunder had attendance in the high 7000s before a bad drop to 6600 in year the penultimate and 5000 in year the last.

Not coincidentally the team started sucking during year 4 of 6. Oh, and the team played in the Mack Center too.

Novelty.

(The ECHL Wranglers hovered around 4-5000 for most of their existence. Yes, the Orleans Arena seats more than that, why do you ask?)

Question is will they be a relocation of the Coyotes or an expansion. They mention both possibilities in the article. And God knows the Coyotes are continuing to be an issue in Phoenix despite Bettman's best deflections.

This is my favorite part of the article.

At the very least, the uniqueness of the market should allow Vegas to generate more revenue in the early years than some of the NHLs problem cities.

"Isn't that keen? A new hockey team in Las Vegas! Pry your father away from the slots and forget about Penn and Teller. Hockey in Las Vegas? That's so unique we just have to check it out. The Johnson clan from Branson, Missouri are in Las Vegas to have fun!"

Well it's not necessarily for the guys at the slots. Its for all those folks who actually live in Vegas.

$375 million for the stadium? Doesn't that pretty much buy you a circus tent in the current stadium market? I can't imagine this stadium would be state-of-the-art.

It's not a stadium first off, it's an arena. And that's about the running rate for such a venue. MLB stadiums are still in the $400-$500 million range. Arenas are a tad cheaper. It's only the NFL and their insanity that is demanding $1.5 billion for their stadiums and frankly not getting a whole hell of a lot for that as I've yet to go to an NFL venue that justifies that kind of cost.

I think Québec City's price tag was $400M (when the US and Canadian dollars were fairly equal), and I believe their arena is going to be slightly larger than the Vegas one, so it seems like the right price range.

and Quebec arena will be sold out (or near that) even if the team they get is bad. Vegas might end up being worse then Phoenix or Florida when it come to attendance. plus there is a little issue in Vegas/Nevada (i think you all might have heard of it) called gambling (might be a little issue since Rick Tocchet)

so long and thanks for all the fish.

You know what?

I'd like to see Las Vegas get an NHL team, only because I'd like to see what kind of professional sports city Las Vegas really is. Arena Football or minor league baseball/hockey or UNLV basketball won't tell us anything. Having an actual top-tier pro team in town will.

Las Vegas is one of the few mid-to-larger cities that hasn't been tested yet.

I'm only fine with Vegas getting a team if they are the Las Vegas Coyotes. There's no need for two teams to try compete for the title of "drawing less fans to see hockey in a desert"

I agree. In fact, I'd rather see Vegas in the NHL than Phoenix. It can't possibly be worse.

I think the last nail in the coffin for the Yotes will be when ASU's hockey program comes in next year, since they'll be downtown, and the hockey fans in the area will probably gravitate there rather than to Glendale.

Yeah, ASU hockey has the potential to get REALLY big out here. The Phoenix area has a surprisingly big hockey following, and if they could get an arena on campus or work something out with the basketball arena downtown (not even sure what it's called anymore) they could end up filling a void WAY better than the Coyotes ever could. Plus, it's basically a spot where the Juniors version of Shane Doan can come to keep his head down and just collect those sweet, sweet pay checks B)

And they can use the old RHI team name and logo:

That logo looks like something on Itch and Scratchy

That exact logo could be used and it would fit right into the whole idea of having a team in Las Vegas....which is horrendous.

That's embarrassing, even by roller hockey standards.

Can I call it now? The NHL announces two expansion teams, netting the Coyotes ~$30M in expansion fees before they can reach the magical $50M threshold.

How's about this; the NHL announces two expansion teams because it wants so damn badly to have those stupid Coyotes stay in Desertland, and is hellbent on never being proven wrong on the obvious.
