So, like a hockey version of the Miami Marlins? Black base, but then use bring colors to pop off of that. I could get on board with that idea.

If you go with bright colors you need something dark to offset them otherwise we'll have the original LA Kings

Oh absolutely...I would be shocked if the team's primary color isn't black. Even if they go with something like Aces (which I doubt), I feel like the use of black as a primary color is a forgone conclusion. If I have some time this weekend I might try throwing something together, but I think some of these color combos could be really amazing.

It's Las Vegas so they can't not use "Vegas Gold". I like the one with gold, pink, and blue, but I don't know if this management team would use pink considering the owner's West Point background and desire to be the Army hockey team. We'll probably get black, gold, and silver, which isn't terrible, but it's just another drab color scheme in a league that could use some more color.

It really is too bad that magenta is so widely shunned in sports. Its a very high energy color and embracing it even as an accent color would be a great way to set a team apart from its competition. What's funny is that once upon a time pink was seen as a boy's color at it was seen as a lighter form of the highly masculine color red. I'd love to know when and how the transition to pink = girly took place.

Las Vegas Aces simply wouldn't work due to the inherent sensitivity to gambling and game fixing that's precluded the pro sports leagues from expanding there until now... Too much downside.

The Aces is referring to flying aces and the area's history of aviation per Sparky's concept above with a mild nod to a spade. If your argument is solely because an ace is also in a deck of playing cards, then we'd have to get rid of the Kings while we're at it.

I'm not up on this, why would Black Knights for an NHL club be off limits?  Who decides that?

Well, there are trademark issues.  "Black Knights" is registered by the USMA.

Smart is believing half of what you hear. Genius is knowing which half.

The NHL having a "no gambling heritage" approach kills most of the city's history. What does that leave? Mining, local terrain/wildlife and aviation. I would almost immediately take aviation off the table because we already have the Jets. Anything not Aces just feels like a runner up.

Local stuff: Monsters (with a Gila tie-in) could work, or Roadrunners. Both are already AHL identities. Scorpions could be an option, but I don't hear anyone getting excited about it. Heat? I've never been a fan of collective nouns or abstract concepts as names. The Wild make up for it with a great logo, but still.

Mining: I got nothing.

Knights is so generic, especially in a nation that does not have knighthood. The only pro team using it I agree with is Charlotte's AAA club, and that's because it is known as the Queen's City. It's basically saying: we couldn't do any better.

IMO, Foley's best bet is a public name the team contest. When the locals overwhelmingly back Aces (it is still the local favorite), he can say "I can't," point the finger at the NHL and let the uproar force their hand.

Foley has already stated he plans to try to get the team's games off the books, like UNLV. If the league has the balls to be the first to go into Vegas, they should have the balls to back something that honors the military aviation presence , while still giving a small nod to the gaming heritage.

Not having some sort of reference to the gaming history of Vegas is pretty childish IMO.

What...the NHL puts a team in Vegas, then puts its fingers in its ears and then goes "La-La-La...Gambling...What Gambling?"

The rest of North America has caught up to Vegas.

Hell, I live in staid old rural Ontario and I can drive 20 minutes up my dirt road here and play the slots at the local race track.

It's not the big deal it used to be.

So, if you negate any sort of gaming term...what's left?

A scary animal like a Scorpion?

How about the Heat?

The locals don't want any reference to the strip.

Nevada has a very prominent Air Force history. (More Air bases in Nevada than any other state)

The Air Force Aces theme (with the wink-wink nod to gaming) makes such sense.

Plus "Aces" is a fantastic hockey monicker. (flying, shooting, skill, the best, fearless, etc.)

"Aces", with an Air Force Theme, a subtle nod to the important gaming history of the city, with a winged-Ace logo!...Bingo!!

A winged-Ace logo (and not necessarily my version) is a pretty cool Guys' logo.

I grew up in a casino town in the state of Nevada. I understand the link, trust me. But when people look at the state, gambling is basically the ONLY thing people see, and that's always been somewhat of a point of contention. The state has a pretty prominent history when it comes to the formation of the west outside of the gaming industry, and I know quite a few people who are disappointed that it's almost completely ignored. The gambling link would be absolutely groan-inducing because it's such a simple, easy connection. It's as close to mailing it in on an identity as you can possibly get. It's not at all creative, and limits your graphics package to looking like a deck of playing cards (aeronautics industry notwithstanding). And not only that, as I already stated, there's ALREADY a pro team in the state called the Aces. They play up the road in Reno, which is as close to an "in state rival" as Vegas is going to get. Having half of the state's professional sport franchises called the Aces in opposite cities would be about as bad as it could possibly be. No thinks.

Its not quite the same, but I've had a similar experience with Idaho. The Idaho Potato Commission has promoted the state's potato crop so aggressively that they've eclipsed all other aspects of the state. Much like Nevada there's a great deal of history and natural beauty that very few people outside the state are aware of. So I agree, to name Nevada's first "big four" team Aces (or any other gambling-associated name) would be much like naming an Idaho pro team something like the Spuds. It might seem cute or appropriate to people outside the state, but it likely wouldn't sit well with the locals...who are ultimately the primary fan base.
