I've played hockey since I was a kid and I have never heard of Black Aces or Flamingos.  Think you may be tranfeering your locale knowledge as a known universal fact.

never once said it was a universal known fact. in fact, i believe i've already said the opposite of that. but it certainly isn't a "local term."

here's some references from "traditional hockey market" sources.

When you're watching the games, look for times when the Blackhawks or Tampa Bay Lightning players need to get their foot (or sometimes their leg) out of the way of something that's coming at them quickly. That's when they flamingo -- they pull up one leg as quickly -- and highly -- as possible and stand on one leg. That's the flamingo, or flamingoing.

Faced with this wave of barbarity, what is Canada doing about this now? In a picture, Canada is doing what ice hockey fans call "The Flamingo"

For non-Canadians reading this article, ice hockey is played with a heavy puck made of hard rubber, which is slapped with long sticks, and which can reach speeds in excess of 170km/h! When a player wants to pretend to help his goaltender by blocking a shot, but without risking an injury, he stands on one foot, like a flamingo

Players who are recalled to the NHL from their AHL or junior teams when those teams own seasons end. Since the NHL has no roster limits after the trade deadline, any of these players would be eligible to come into a game, but usually don't unless there are injuries.

black aces—players who practice with the team but never play. A term often evoked during playoffs.

The term “Black Aces” originally had a negative hockey connotation. It originated with the legendary Eddie Shore, who purchased a minor league team in 1940, and began to refer to spare roster players by that term in reference to the bad omen that superstitious card players believe comes about from being dealt the ace of spades. Shore said that the team was in bad shape if it had to use its Black Aces in a game, especially during the playoffs.

i'm in no way saying that everyone on earth knows, or should know, these terms... but to somehow make it sound like these terms are local to dallas area rec hockey league jargon is about as far off base as you can get.

I think the Flamingos name would definitely invoke ridicule. Every time a player didn't block a shot there'd be calls to send him to the Flamingos, etc. etc.

Aces, less so. Never heard the term black aces before.

Black Aces are the late callups/healthy scratches in the playoffs who get plugged in when a regular can't play.

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

If you have to explain a term to a message board like this,  then the term isn't an accepted universal name.

Aren't flamingos more of a Florida thing anyways?

Here's a list of Fauna of Nevada:

And finally, the state animal:

Las Vegas Bighorns sounds pretty great, and could have really cool uniforms. There's my vote.

Just like with Aces, Reno already has a pro team named the Bighorns...

Unless there's a trademark issue, what Reno has or doesn't have is an absolute non-issue with the folks in Vegas.

There's all sorts of duplicate team names in the minors of all sports...Knights, Senators, Red Wings, etc...

The only thing that matters is that "Aces" would be unique in major sports.

I'll bet that 95% of hockey fans aren't even aware of a Reno Aces team, and couldn't care less.

"Aces" is the #1 choice with Vegas residents and they're all aware of the Reno thing.

It's not a factor one way or another.

It does matter because there is already a team in the same STATE that has the name.   Proximity is a thing.

I don't know why we are all debating or arguing over the viability of names like aces, flamingos, or bighorns anyway... You know, names that in a vacuum would be pretty decent... when we all know they're going to be something ridiculous like the Las Vegas Black Silverhawks.

I'd put my support behind Las Vegas Scorpions. It's represents a part of the animal kingdom that's underrepresented in sports (arachnids), some cool imagery could come out of that name for logos and uniforms, and it's a "threatening" animal that could kill you (albeit unlikely that it would). There also isn't an in-state team that already uses the name Scorpions, and for Sparky's sake, a scorpion logo could fit on a belt buckle!

The only downside is that somebody might connect the team with the band Scorpions, but that's a really minor point. It's more minor than Reno teams already using the Aces and Bighorn names.

Its a factor because it's stupid to name a team down south the same name as one of the teams in their in-state rival city when there are so few teams in the state. It's completely lazy and uninspired. Name them the Silver Desert Flamingos for all I care. Just don't do something dumb like duplicating names in such a ridiculously small (for population) state.

there's a new article on NHL.com with Foley talking about the name. He says that they have purposely led people off a cliff when it comes to some of the names. Like Sand Knights. It was a decoy fake name.

He wants a two word name that represents the military values. Does not like Scorpions because it is defensive animal. So with that information, what are some options?
