Las Vegas NHL Expansion

The Hunter's and the rest of the London Knights organization made it clear that they would do everything they can to protect the name of their team. They have a lot of clout in hockey.

So two teams can't be called the "Knights"? I could understand if they are in the same league, but an OHL team has no business saying what an NHL team can/can't do. It would be like Boise State or Western Michigan suing the Denver Broncos for using the same nickname. Sounds like those people in London are a bit full of themselves.

Las Vegas Knights or Vegas Knights. Better than any other option.

Correct but I was referring to how the CHL's London Knights are blocking  NHL Vegas from using Knights so why wouldn't the Seattle Tbirds block them from using their name. Pretty certain Seattle Tbirds aren't concerned about another regional team in Springfield using their name but it would probably be another story if a national brand like NHL Las Vegas took the name.

I think that the IP laws in the US are different enough that they couldn't stop them.

But back on subject Vegas is going to pick a bland and boring name. Everyone will cry foul for a bit and then everyone will move on until the team moves sometime in the future and the next new city is looking for a moniker.  The circle of life.

You act like the NHL isn't practically a role-model for battered women, the way they stay in bad markets, make excuses, and give them chance after chance, after chance. The Vegas management has sold enough season tickets with 5 to 10 year commitments, that, even if they do tank, I don't see it happening in fewer that 20 years. They've already pretty much secured fiscal solvency for 5 years.

Money drives this league, not hockey, and certainly not common sense.

A gorilla identity would be unique in North American pro sports.

The Atlanta Silverbacks were in the NASL until this past season, when they dropped down to the semi-pro NPSL.

Anyway, I don't think the name is any good if there is no overt connection with gorillas.  The soccer team changed its name from the Atlanta Ruckus to the Atlanta Silverbacks because of a gorilla who was a major attraction at the local zoo.

Also, Nevada's nickname "the Silver State" is not enough to make "Silverbacks" a good choice.

I meant major N.A. pro sports (MLB,NFL,NHL,NBA), not obscure 3rd division soccer clubs. At that point I'd have just mentioned Cleveland State University.

It's better than "Silver Knights," as it's an actual thing that exists.

Fourth division.  But before this year the Silverbacks were in the second-division NASL -- the league that has the New York Cosmos, the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers, and the Tampa Bay Rowdies.

Well, it's true that silverbacks are a real thing.  But that's no basis for claiming that it's a good name for that team.  Ear wax is a real thing; but that's not a good name.  So I'd say that "Silver Knights" and "Silverbacks" both suck, but that they suck for different reasons.

Anyway, the whole act of ruling out gambling/gaming references is pretty absurd.  The name "Aces" is such a natural, bringing with it the possibility of some great designs (as we have seen in this thread).

I like the sound, flow and uniqueness of Las Vegas Flamingos. No, it doesnt strike fear in the heart of oponents, but neither does "Pelicans" and pro sports has adopted that identity.

Other names that I'm fond of:
Las Vegas Hitmen (C'mon its Vegas, baby! Although wouldn't want to step on Bret Hart's hockey skates)

Las Vegas Thunder (Railroad/locomotive theme-homage to LV's Union Pacific Railroad history)

Las Vegas Canyons (So the canyons lie right outside of LV proper- close enough. If Colorado can have an element of nature in its name, why not a monstorous geographical formation for Vegas?)

Las Vegas Silver Knights (Move over LA Kings, more black & silver on its way . Wouldn't this color scheme compliment the Oakland Las Vegas Raiders???)

I'm not sure how not wanting to share a name with another pro team in Vegas' only in-state rival city is a PC issue.

Hmm, good point, I always forget they exist...

LaS VegaS ACeS has too many "s" sounds too close to each other, so it doesn't really roll off the tongue.

Plus again, gambling imagery is a no-no because even the NHL is smart enough to not associate themselves with that industry in the gambling capital of the world. No matter how perfect it is for the city, it's not a great PR move, especially when we know the NHL has a vested interest in this team succeeding. In a vacuum, I really like the Aces name but this isn't a vacuum so the name doesn't work. No amount of belt buckles or shot glasses will change that.

I assess all sports team concepts based on how they look stretched over boobs.

I honestly don't think the NHL cares about a MiLB team with the same name.  Especially not if they go more the aviation Aces route.

Fair enough, but you could make the argument they shouldn't care too much about a junior hockey team with the same name either, and yet here we are...

Well, the NHL associates itself with Las Vegas casinos when they have award shows...so I kind of doubt they would absolutely negate a gambling theme if it was presented.

Smart is believing half of what you hear. Genius is knowing which half.

Black Knights, Golden Knights, Silver Knights, Neon Knights, Desert Knights, Sand Knights, Nighthawks, Desert Hawks, and Red Hawks. Geez! At this rate, can't Black Knight Sports and Entertainment just register Quebec Nordiques, then transfer the trademark, domain name, and NHL franchise rights to Quebecor?

Most people don't relate Flamingos with Las Vegas, just because there used to be a casino of that name is a stretch. IMO.
