2021-22 NHL Regular Season

As a Habs fan, I wish they would remove the language barrier and let anybody be coach and GM. They're having one of their worst seasons ever and they're not changing any of the top staff for what seems to be a lack of other french candidates.

Isn’t there a cap in the NHL? How does Vegas plan to field a full team long term?  Volunteer shifts? Some real San Jose Sharks vibes with this one.

The Golden Knights get to do de facto cap circumvention because of no state income tax. Aside from that, they just seem to shuffle everything around every year and it always works anyway.

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

Welcome to the NHL, Seattle! You've completed your first chokejob and given the 0-10-1 Coyotes their first win of the season!

The GWG was so sad, too.  Grubauer looks like a big ol’ sack of ass.  5 goals on 22 shots, the last of which casually farts into the net after a phenomenal empty-net Kraken goal to tie.

Thankfully he’s only *checks notes* here for another 5 years for over $30 million.

Also Seattle’s power play is historically bad.  Not an exaggeration.  After years of watching the Blackhawks shart a dismal power play on the ice, I’ve apparently discovered I’m a sadist, for the Kraken are actively putting on a show of special teams buffoonery the likes of which has rarely ever been seen.

At least the Coyotes look like the Coyotes again.

They don't get to renegotiate Eichel's deal to reflect the change in income tax, so really the player is the only one benefitting in this situation. Pietrangelo & Stone pretty much signed for market value too, so I think circumvention is a bit of a strong word.

Nashville & Dallas don't have state tax either, but it hasn't suddenly made them top free agent destinations.

The Ducks have placed Bob Murray on administrative leave.

Quote

"We recently became aware of accusations of improper professional conduct against Bob Murray. After internal review, we enlisted Shephard Mullin to perform an independent investigation. Upon recommendation from their initial findings, we have decided to place Bob on administrative leave pending final results. In the interim, Vice President of Hockey Operations and Assistant General Manager Jeff Solomon will assume the role of Interim General Manager. We will have no further comment until the investigation is complete."

At least, possibly in the wake of the Blackhawks scandal, the Ducks appear to be the instigator of this whole review and investigation and broke the story themselves.

I guess at least it's not covering up sexual assault?

Sources: Ducks GM Bob Murray placed on leave for ‘mental warfare,’ verbal abuse

Quote

Multiple league and team sources tell Daily Faceoff that Murray is under investigation for allegations of creating a toxic workplace environment by way of his repeated verbal abuse and harassment of Ducks players, coaches and personnel, plus his intimidation tactics and temper tantrums that fostered a culture of fear throughout the organization.

“Working for Bob Murray was pure daily mental warfare,” one source said. “The abuse was endless. Crazy text messages to players and staff berating them for their performance and threats of job security happened with regularity. These weren’t one-time slip-ups or mistakes. These were regular explosions and eruptions.”

Another source said: “There’s not just one skeleton in the closet here with ‘Murph,'” as Murray is known by his nickname around the NHL. “The list of people who have felt his wrath first-hand over the years is long.”

He already should have been on his way out to pasture and I think the owners were going to let him ride out his contract with this being the last season on it (also taking into account the hiring of the guy from the Kings front office this last offseason and their long time Director of Amateur Scouting being promoted to Assistant GM two summers ago (partially so Seattle couldn't poach him)), but maybe he won't anymore.

So much excitement for Chris Driedger to start after Grubauer has been melting down in real time.  He plays well, aside for giving up 3 Golden Knights goals in less than 90 seconds.

What is it with the Penguins being so snakebitten in Chicago? Crosby has never won a game in Chicago and the Penguins have never had a lead in a game at the UC since 2009. The last time the Penguins won a game in Chicago was before Crosby was drafted.

Mighty Ducks of Anaheim (CHL - 2018 Orr Cup Champions) Chicago Rivermen (UBA/WBL - 2014, 2015, 2017 Intercontinental Cup Champions)

King's Own Hexham FC (BIP - 2022 Saint's Cup Champions) Portland Explorers (EFL - Elite Bowl XIX Champions) Real San Diego (UPL) Red Bull Seattle (ULL - 2018, 2019, 2020 Gait Cup Champions) Vancouver Huskies (CL)

How much of an abusive drunk do you have to be to get kicked out of hockey

We're in a new era of hockey.  According to a few people online and in life that I've encountered discussing the Beach and Murray situations, we're in the "it's all going to hell" generation of sports where men can't be men anymore, whatever that means.

Hockey, more than any sport, does badly need a deep cleansing of its British-boarding-school boy-rape culture (along with the drinking, which, pace the people who don't want to hear it, goes hand in hand with the rape). I don't think they'd finally be doing it if they didn't have to preserve their historic position as a league for high-income consumers, and people with high incomes these days are very concerned with athletes talking about their feelings, as demonstrated by the NBA becoming the league of choice for America's cultural elite.

As we saw in baseball, hockey always being a little behind the curve, we're gonna replace every cranky old executive simultaneously suffering from CTE and picklebrain with MBAs who reply-tweeted Capgeek in 2011, only to ultimately somehow be worse off for it.

Nah, I think this is the opposite of getting cancelled. Dude was apparently a pretty thorough :censored: over years and years, and was it all a side effect of booze? At work? Seems doubtful. This is just so he can crawl back into an organization later as a scout or consultant or something.
