When you think of the Lions, what's the highlight of the last 50 years? The Barry Sanders era. Since he retired before the '99 training camp, they've only had 2 double-digit win seasons. They had 3 during Barry's 10-year career and made the playoffs 5 times. Prior to him arriving in Detroit in '89, they hadn't won 10 games in a season since 1970, and prior to that, only did it in '62 and '53. The last time they won the division was with Barry Sanders in 1993. They've made the playoffs 4 stinking times since he hung up his cleats. It can be easily argued that, after their 3 NFL championships in the 1950's, that the Barry-era was the brightest in their bleak modern history. Sorry to remind everyone of all that, Lions fans. But, if the Lions are looking to yet again try a new design with a difficult color palette to design for, I'd suggest they look back to the 90's first.
IceCap
Oh I missed another Ravens/Browns argument. Good. I'm ing tired of that one. The problem with the Lions is that the Sanders-era uniforms were classic but they never had the success necessary to engrain them as untouchable. Same for the Cardinals' classic look actually. The problem with the Lions is that nothing else has stuck. They tried adding black. No dice. They re-worked it so the black was more integrated, added a custom font, and gave the logo a face lift. Still not there. Then they stripped the black away and went for a neo-retro yet still futuristic Nike set... and it's already on the way out. Just going back to the Sanders look and leaving well enough alone might be the best way forward. 10 PotD 26/2/12 1/7/15 2020 BASS Spin the Wheel, Make the Deal Regular Season Champion 2021 BASS NFL Pick'em Regular Season Champion
FiddySicks
I wouldn’t even mind seeing the Lions go back to the old logo, even. Weird to see the argument that the old look never had enough success to keep them, when they play in the same division as the Bears. Would one Super Bowl win 40 years ago floating in an ocean of burning tires have made that Lions look more untouchable? 4 On 11/19/2012 at 7:23 PM, oldschoolvikings said: She’s still half convinced “Chris Creamer” is a porn site.) I think the Lions update from a decade ago is a good touch. Completely keeps with tradition while modernizing it just a tad. It's a lot like the 49ers when they added the extra oval in the mid-90s. It's not a wild alteration. It just works.
Carolingian Steamroller
People are going to hate me for this but: This came very close to greatness. Here me out. We have the updated logo and a tri-color design ordering is consistent across every element except the home jersey (black on the outside, followed by the lightest non-background color, with the interior color the middle ground [silver/blue]). The black really creates a sharp line against the silver on the helmet/pants and the Honolulu blue on the home jersey that helps it stand out. The helmet stripes are way too narrow but in an interesting way. I think with a slightly better number font that matched and silver numbers on the home uniform, this might be a winner. The Lions also made the playoffs multiple time wearing this. That having been said, I do like their current set because I think it successfully cleaned up some of the issues with the old set, namely making the helmet stripes a more reasonable width and opting for a silver facemask. I think a happy medium would be to swap the black for the interior most color (silver on the blue jersey / blue on the helmet, pants, and away jersey). 7

It looked even better before the Nike toilet bowl collars. The neck striping really completed the look. 6

The issue is that Blue & Silver are tough. They’re similar in tone and White only competes: it’s a rather flat pallete, not a ton of contrast, as can be seen with the Grey numbers on the current Blue jerseys. Black isn’t a very complimentary color to add with it either, as we’ve seen. Detroit is tricky, which is why I say go back to what definitely worked and at least has some good history.

Yeah, I feel like people forget/don't really remember that the Lions made the playoffs more often then they didn't in the 90s. A semi competently ran team till Millen set them back a decade, and then some. And yes I absolutely agree that their 90s set was their best look, I actually did a Madden franchise recently where I exclusively used them. Really good look, though I don't hate either of their post 2000s look, though I do prefer the old logo weirdly. I have borderline personality disorder, if my posts ever come off as aggressive or word vomit-y to you, please let me know.
Germanshepherd
In Madden I always use the 2010’s helmet and pants with the 90’s jerseys and I really like the look. The 2010’s are my personal favorite set, but that font doesn’t compare to shiny Honolulu Blue block with silver outlines. I think the 90’s helmet + pants are too Cowboys-esque for me, even if I know nobody’s confusing the two I’d like to have some variety in the blue/silver teams’ striping patterns. 1 i have unquantifiable corpses on my conscience

Also side-note, this is a beautiful matchup. The Honolulu Blue and Silver vs the Hunter Green and Yellow. EDIT: Was perusing the Lions subreddit and saw these. Man, does the 1982-2002 Uniform look gorgeous on a modern template. (There's two images. oldschoolvikings
I think the Lions current look has potential. They just took it two or three steps too far, which is pretty standard procedure during the Nike era. The dark gray adds zero. The only place it even shows up on the primary uniforms is in the number outlines, which muddies the borders. It’s obvious it was only tacked on a an annoying excuse to foist those horrible dull gray color rush monstrosities on the world. Nike has such a weird boner for dark gray. Step one is dropping that useless color from all applications. Next are the sleeve word marks and WCF patch. Clutter that helps nothing. (As a side note… as a two decade resident of Detroit, I can assure you that absolutely no one has fond memories of William Clay Ford as the Lions owner.). Drop those useless elements from the sleeves and let those Northwestern stripes do their job. Do the above, wear blue over silver at home, mix in the top notch throwback, alternate silver and blue pants on the road, find a white sock with the road jersey’s sleeve stripe to wear with the blue pants, only wear those stupid white practice pants during practice… then I could live with this look indefinitely, personally. 11 1 http://dstewartpaint.blogspot.com/
