Kraken have partnered with the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe for their jersey ad space starting next year.  If they must fill the ad space, I suppose this is the way to do it.

Yeah, this feels like it’s in the same class as the patch the Jazz wear for cancer research - deliberately using ad space for a good cause. I’m generally opposed to ad space on (non-soccer) uniforms on purely aesthetic grounds, but this is of course a very welcome exception. If ad patches HAVE to be a thing, then I’d love to see more teams in the NHL, NBA, and other ad-wearing leagues take this kind of “do good” initiative with the ad space they have.

what exactly is the good cause?

the team already supports the tribe in various ways. Even if 100% of the profits from the ad patch went back to the tribe…why not just conduct your business and give back to the tribe without the patch?

it’s not generating income for the tribe if Muckleshoot is paying for the patch.

At least with the Jazz cancer research ad, it *might* promote others to donate. Do people donate to a tribe?

Around here if you ask most people, Muckleshoot is a casino. the poster above me called it, it’s a thinly veiled ad for the casino.

don’t get me wrong I’ll take this over a Starbucks ad on the jerseys any day, and as far as ads go it’s not bad looking , but it’s still completely unnecessary and a blemish on an otherwise beautiful jersey.

My line of thinking was that it would bring awareness to and show (a consistently visible) support for the tribe. I was unaware of the casino connection, so I guess there’s that, but I’d still like to believe there were some good intentions behind the patch to benefit the tribe in some way.

Of course a team should do much more to support causes than simply say “here’s a patch for you”, and anything less would be an empty gesture. But the optimist in me saw some good in the patch, I guess.

You can choose to look at it as a thinly veiled ad for a casino, or you can look at it as a deliberate decision to highlight the tribe instead of just its casino.

Just as you can choose to look at Climate Pledge Arena as a thinly veiled ad for Amazon, or you can look at it as a deliberate decision to highlight the environmental initiative instead of the corporation.

Just as you can choose to look at the Kraken Community Iceplex (training facility and admin offices) as a thinly veiled ad for the title sponsor Starbucks, or you can look at it as a deliberate decision to highlight Starbucks 'Community Stores' program instead of the whole of the corporation.

Would I personally prefer to eschew ad patches and corporate naming rights entirely?  Absolutely.  Does it feel kinda like the lesser of multiple evils, especially in the case of Amazon and Starbucks?  Yeah.  But again, if you're going to fill ad space, at least the Kraken have been consistent in their decisions - and in their appeals to my optimism!

Ethical, schmethical, it's probably just a roundabout ad for a casino.

"The Muckleshoot Casino was among the Kraken’s very first sponsors, hammering out the partnership in summer 2019 when the expansion squad was still known as NHL Seattle and announcing a deal in October of that year. The casino has signage throughout Climate Pledge Arena and the “Muckleshoot Casino Power Play” also gets announced over the public address system whenever the Kraken begin a man advantage. "

I mean, gambling is a pretty major social ill, so of course highlighting the tribe looks less crass. But that's like applauding the old NASCAR paint jobs where they took the lettering off the Marlboro logo because it highlighted aesthetically pleasing geometric design.

I mean the tribe is paying money (likely more in the millions) to the Kraken to (hopefully) bring people to the casino. That’s how the tribe gets a ROI. This isn’t really an altruistic endeavor. It’s nice the Kraken partnered with the tribe, but in the end it’s all business, just like the other sponsorships around the arena.

Marlboro never has sponsored a NASCAR car. Winston on the other hand sponsored the top series, the all-star race and even Jimmy Spencer's car. Plenty of Tobacco brands were plastered across NASCAR, so you're using a bad example.

I think he confused it with F1 and Ferrari

Where will stanley cup patches go now?

hoping for SC finals with teams that have no ad on their jersey. 🙏
