2022-23 NHL Season

The NHL's 4 best records in the overall standings came out of the East.

Not counting the fact that 2 of them played each other in the 2nd round (Devils were #3), the #1/#2/#4 teams went a combined 1-8 in home games against a 17th place team

If that's not the most hockey thing ever I don't know what is

Oh no, two of the most marketable American players in the league are facing off against each other for their respective franchises’ first Stanley Cup.

Tkachuk is literally the only reason this isn't a tied series

He capitalized on his chances for sure. Our guys didn’t. Let’s hope we are in the ECF next year and have a chance at redemption.

If the Penguins didn't blow their final game of the season, the Panthers wouldn't have made the playoffs and the Blackhawks wouldn't have gotten Bedard.

One single game affected a lot.

Don't forget Buffalo. They finished with as many wins as Florida and also 1 point back.

They lost 2-1 to the Panthers on April 4.

If BUF wins that game, THEY make the playoffs at FLA's expense

Vegas is probably the league’s signature franchise at this point.  I would have loved Edmonton to come out of the West but it’s hard to suggest this is bad for the league.

I don't know if the interest will be as high as it was 5 years ago for VGK's last Cup appearance since I think the curiosity factor won't be as high since they're no longer an expansion upstart

I'm mainly a postseason ice hockey viewer, need someone to catch me up on Matthew Tkachuk -- Who was he traded for and how badly was Calgary fleeced? Cause that guy is LEGIT.

The main piece coming back was Jonathan Huberdeau, who had 115 points last year in Florida and 55 this year in Calgary. The trade seems slanted for Florida right now, but it was a salvage job for Calgary as Tkachuk requested a trade. It was viewed as being a pretty even trade at the time, but neither team matched their regular season performance from the year before. The Calgary GM wanted to fix his team by firing the coach, ownership wouldn't let him, and the GM quit... then ownership fired the coach anyway after the reason for the GM quitting leaked.

Both true and also a representation of how much of a joke this league is.

Speaking as the resident Flames fan here - meh. Proud of him regardless; in fact with how this past season went, in hindsight I wonder how much him (and Johnny) wanting out was just on account of Sutter being a past-his-prime hard:censored: that nobody actually liked playing under.

Hard to believe that even with all that he won coach of the year last season

Given that was the only good year of his three two-and-a-half season tenure, it really starts to feel like that team accomplished what it did in spite of him.

EDIT: also this wasn't even the first time in the last 10 years that the Flames soured on an abusive "hard-nosed" coach a mere single season after he won the Jack Adams Award

If anything, that makes it even more impressive that they did what they did (Three 100 point players!)

In 1996 it seemed the country was behind the Panthers because:

  • Colorado had just left Quebec, so Canadians were mad at them
  • The Year of the Rat was a spectacular story
  • They were just scrappy and fun to watch/nobody on the team you could hate

In 2023, it'll be return of the Panthers vs. the youngest team in the league. I wonder if people will be into Vegas or Florida...or neither. Either way, I'm stoked. LET'S GO CATS! It's great to be an OG fan this year!

"Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be eaten. Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve. It doesn't matter whether you're a lion or a gazelle. When the sun comes up, you'd better be running." - Unknown | 🌐 Check out my articles on jerseys at Bacon Sports 🔗

He gave the Flames 6 years of his career, and you could never accuse him of not playing hard while he was there. Players aren’t obligated to spend their entire careers with the team who drafted them, and he at least was respectful & told the Flames his intentions so they could get something back for him.

He’s the son of a borderline Hall of Fame American player, and happens to be one of the few elite players who is capable of showing some emotion & personality on the ice. This is the kind of thing people complain is missing from the game, so yeah it’s a marketer’s dream.
