I have never liked the debut patch that we’ve now seen in MLS, MLB, and NFL. I guess it’s cool for the trading card community, but I think it’s fairly stupid for on field gear. Another example of the merchandising machine impacting the equipment space.

Is it for their first game or entire season?

I’m watching the Inter Miami vs Real Salt Lake match, and apparently Suarez is wearing the debut patch. Makes it even sillier. I could understand it for an academy or young player making his professional debut, but it seems stupid to see the patch on a 37 year old who has won nearly every trophy that the game offers.

The league doesn’t appear to be posting the kit assignment graphics again this year (sigh), but here’s my guess at the rest of this week’s matchups. An * indicates a confirmed choice.

Columbus (new yellow/black/yellow) vs. Atlanta (red/black/red)

*LAFC (new all-black) vs. *Seattle (new green/blue/white)

Charlotte (new blue-ish/white/white) vs. NYCFC (new all-black)

*DCU (new all-black) vs. *New England (white/red/red)

Orlando (all-purple) vs. Montreal (new all-light blue)

Philadelphia (new all-navy) vs. Chicago (white/light blue/white)

Austin (green/black/black) vs. Minnesota (all-white)

Dallas (new navy-red/navy/navy) vs. San Jose (new all-white)

Houston (all-orange) vs. SKC (new all-navy)

St. Louis (all-red) vs. RSL (gold/blue/gold)

Portland (all-green) vs. Colorado (all-light blue)

*Cincinnati (new all-cream) vs. *Toronto (gray/red/gray)

Nashville (new yellow/blue/yellow) vs. *NYRB (new red/black/red)

LAG (new all-white) vs. Miami (all-black)

Referees are wearing the US Soccer referee kits instead of Cappelli tonight. I'm guessing that's because they aren't members of PRO? Or did Cappelli walk away?

Majority of the replacement refs are US Soccer certified so will probably be wear those logos. The fact that there is one wearing a pro badge is interesting though as they are the ones on strike.

PRO can’t be on strike — they’re the employer/management. PSRA is the labor union of officials who are employees of PRO. The referees are not on strike; it’s the opposite — they’re locked out by PRO, who brought in the replacements in place of the union workers.

CITY change kits in action on the pitch last night:

That dose of color is really needed. That said, it not illegal to wear contrasting shorts, MLS sides. This one could really use the CITYRED shorts (and the primary kits could use navy shorts).

All in all, I still really like these.

What kills this kit for me is that they inverted the colors on their badge for some insane reason... Instead of having a red crest on a white shirt, it's a white crest on a white shirt.

Dumb.

Not too much of an inversion...they just made the navy background of the badge white for this kit (and added a CITYRED border). I'm going to presume it was to keep emphasis on the CITY banner.  Not really a justification, but more a clarification.

That said, that would have been a great kit to apply CITY's alternate mark to:

THAT badge, truly inverted (white for CITYRED and CITYRED for navy), would have been a big winner.

Columbus and Atlanta got the memo. I feel like this will be the primary look for the Crew going forward, especially having that large splash of black on the front of the jerseys. I would say, Atlanta should have red undershirts or long sleeve versions available as well. I don't know of any MLS team that has long sleeves available for players or fans.

The "inversion" is that they flipped the highlights and the shadows... the dark parts of the crest are now light and the light parts are now dark. They "ghost logo"-ed their own crest.

It's a little less egregious because it's a symbol and not an illustration, but the crest has less visual weight and is more intricate when inverted.

Hope they didn't sell too many of those pine needle jerseys yet! Absolutely wild to go from the same sponsor for 12 years to the same sponsor for 1 match.

I would suspect that they will either offer refunds or jersey swaps to anyone who wants to rid themselves of the Dabella jersey.

Luckily for the Timbers, the new jerseys were initially manufactured without the sponsor logo so there should be some stock laying around. It’ll take a while for new runs of the jerseys to get produced, though. The most pressing thing is for the EQ staff to get jerseys ready for matches, but I believe they received blank shirts (both the primary and new secondary) before the season and were applying the DaBella logo in house anyways. Here’s my thought on what they’ll do for the rest of the season:

Not sure if it’s any different than when I was doing it ( I was working for a USL club outfitted by Nike), but we got the kits fully blank, and I had to apply everything down to the team crest. I’m assuming Adidas ships theirs out with the crest already heat pressed to the jersey.

Sponsor patch was the very last thing I pressed (other than numbers and league logo, and that was only for game kits). This was the primary reason why we held off on that, and we had a rock solid sponsorship deal (with a local hospital conglomerate).

This just shows you how great soccer kits would look without a massive ad on the front. Not trying to start a debate on why they need them financially. Just pointing out the obvious. Universally, MLS and soccer just seem to get a free pass on the ads. I can't stand them aesthetically.
