Pretty wild the amount of QB moves around the league this offseason.  Is it more than normal or am I seeing what I want to see?

  • Kenny Pickett*:  PIT > PHI
  • Sam Darnold:  SF > MIN
  • Joe Flacco:  CLE > IND
  • Gardner Minshew:  IND > LV
  • Russell Wilson:  DEN > PIT
  • Kirk Cousins:  MIN > ATL
  • Desmond Ridder*:  ATL > AZ
  • Jameis Winston:  NO > CLE
  • Sam Howell:  WAS > SEA
  • Jimmy Garoppolo:  LV > TBD
  • Justin Fields:  CHI > TBD

* - trade

bold - started at least one game in 2023

Speaking of Jimmy G:

Fields will be a draft-day trade, or this year's Sam Bradford, who the idiot Vikings gave up a 1st-round pick for at the end of the preseason.

At this point if I'm the Bears, I'm holding on to him and hoping that a decent team's QB gets injured in training camp and they go into panic mode.  Like the Bradford situation.

Why the hell would Minnesota trade their best player in the past 5 years to a division rival?

1) they're just going to waste his prime years with some jabroni QB and incompetent offense.  It's hard to build around a WR.  They thought they were building around Cousins, but that didn't work out, so now there's not really a big need for Jefferson.  With the #1 pick, they can start over and build around a new QB (and have a couple of seasons to do so while he develops.)

2) the "trading within the division" thing is overblown.  The Vikings aren't going to compete this year, so it's irrelevant, at least for '24.  Plus, the Bears would be stuck with Fields, who (even with Jefferson) the Vikings may not view as a threat.  Plus the Bears are also incompetent idiots, so Minn. .may not care.

Sometimes you just have to make the best deal that you can, regardless of who it's with.  The Cowboys and Eagles have traded, the Eagles traded McNabb to Washington, and there's probably countless other examples.

Sometimes trades can be win/win, so the net is zero.  If the net is zero, then it truly doesn't matter.

Fair. I honestly forgot about the McNabb trade. It’s an entire era I’d like to wipe from my mind.

I think Minnesota should at least consider trading Jefferson but that isn’t fair value for him. Jefferson’s trade value is at least two firsts, I’d think. Giving up Jefferson and a first to move up ten spots?  Hard pass.

Justin Fields traded to Pittsburgh for 6th round pick (turns into 4th based on playtime)

This feels like the Steelers grabbed Wilson too early and now they're lucky Chicago had to send Fields away. This QB room is improved, but it will be dysfunctional as hell.

I wish Washington pulled the trigger on this if all that was needed was a 6th.

I mean, I don’t think so. They just brought in CRAZY potential upside for almost nothing with both of their new QBs. Either this pays off handsomely for them, or it doesn’t but they took so little risk that it doesn’t much matter.

Goddam Steelers. Every time.

I'm inclined to agree. At worst, this is a stopgap until they can draft their next QB (who could come because of how bad Wilson and Fields can get). At best, these are two guys who can keep the Tomlin dream alive for another year or more.

Maybe Russ and Fields together will be beneficial for both of them, especially considering the awful situations both guys left.

My first thought was the same - how do the 32s and Giants not do this?  But then I thought more, and it doesn't make much sense for the Giants to have him backing up $47M Daniel Jones (and it would be hard for them to demote Jones before the season starts).  They're not going to be competitive, so it doesn't matter.

But for Washington?  I don't even know who their QB is.  They're probably not going to compete, but since they don't have to pay Fields, why the F not?  The worst case is that they get fooled into thinking he's a franchise guy and then crush their futures by signing him to some ridiculous deal.  But basically it's a low-risk high-reward thing.

My main  reaction is LOL BEARS WTF YOU IDIOTS, HAHAHAHAHAHA, YOU'RE SO DUMB, U R SO DUM.

I get that they wanted to do right by Fields and not have the awkward tension of him and the new QB in the same "room" (I hate that term.). But had they waited till the draft or till someone gets hurt in preseason, he'd've likely gone to a team that would have needed him to start, and they would have gotten better compensation (and by better, I mean basically anything.)

Browns fan here, so permit me to be a bit bias about the Steelers...

They greatly improved their QB squad. However, it's going to be a sheet-show no matter what. Wilson went there thinking he was a shoe-in for the starting position. Steelers went with him because Denver ate the rest of the contract. They boot Pickett to make it obvious who is starting. And now they get Fields?

Wilson is not going to be happy. Fields won't be happy either. Sure, both think they're going to or should be the starter. But how well will they work together in the lockerroom instead of creating factions to support them starting over the other guy. Browns had many times two above average but flawed QBs at the same time where the team as a whole couldn't function because half wanted QBA and other half wanted QBB to start.

You wind up with basically nothing. Players dog it when their guy isn't starting, in-fighting, etc. You need a clear starter. I know you say you are going to have a competition and no one's job is guaranteed, but you have to at least know that's just to avoid complacency by the starter. If you don't know today when trading for Fields whether he's QB1 or QB2 or if the future starter is still in the draft... then you're just throwing spaghetti at the wall and hoping something sticks.

In the end, this feels like a Tommy Maddox situation. Remember him? Good, serviceable. Wins some games as long as he's not the weapon needed to win the game. But he can lose some games if you put them in his hands. But he played long enough to get them to Roethlisberger and the rest is history.

Fields isn't their answer. But he might make them get over the hump enough, long enough, that they can work for QB1 in the 2025 or 2026 draft while assembling the rest of the roster around Fields/Wilson and and just plug in the future franchise QB later the way Roethlisberger was installed with the likes of that D, Bettis, Ward, Randle El, etc.

Sure do. He brought the Steelers back from deficits of 24-7 and 33-21 to beat the Browns in the 2002 playoffs. The Steelers scored 22 points in the 4th quarter. I still can't believe the Browns let Tommy :censored:ing Maddox do that, but they did.

I dunno, I feel like one of the two of them. Fields and Wilson, may be flipped again before the season starts. Unless the Steelers really think Russell Wilson can serve as a good mentor to Justin Fields (which they'd have to be about as dumb as the five-way interchange at PA-51 @ Library Rd/88 to think that), don't see how this could possibly help them at all.  But hey, let's ride and see what happens...
