2024 NFL Offseason

I’m not surprised Hartman wasn’t drafted. He’s 25 and doesn’t have a great arm or vision. I feel like he benefitted by playing in a very unique offense at Wake with the slow read plays and, imo (but I’m not a scout so it’s worth nothing), wasn’t that impressive at ND despite being a fifth or sixth year starter, which is a huge advantage in college.  He’s no threat to Daniels and I doubt Washington sees him as more than a guy who can maybe play the backup role eventually.

Steelers with Joey Porter and Joey Porter Jr.

Technically different owners, even though same family.  At least I'm pretty sure they were not drafted by the same Rooney.

It was pretty touching, once Jeff Lurie got on the phone to talk to him, as his mother had recently passed away, and Lurie had grown close to their family over the years, knowing him from the time he was born.

The Eagles frustratingly don't seem to care about the LB position, but I hope so much that he's good and can stick with the team.

I don't wear jerseys, and only own 4, ranging from 1991 - 2008.  Jeremiah Trotter is one of those 4.  I'm so happy that they got Jr, even if I've never actually seen him play and don't know if it was a legit pick or a "let's do his dad a solid" pick.

Jeremiah Sr. also doesn't have to go very far to watch his son play.

To be fair, ND's receivers were incredibly average this past year, and no tight end stepped up to fill Mayer's role. They were also a very run-focused offense. Which maybe speaks to their lack of confidence in the passing game I suppose. I don't see him as a threat to Daniels, but Cousins wasn't supposed to be a threat to RG3 either. Then the injuries happened. We'll see if they did enough to fix their horrid offensive line so they can actually protect Daniels.

That’s fair. And transfer QBs do tend to struggle in their first year.   I hope Daniels does well. I can’t stand LSU, but he was a lot of fun to watch.

Emory Jones (Ravens)

The Ravens and their love for athletic run-first quarterbacks. I know the dude may or may not even make the team, but this franchise and their insistence on undervaluing passers is spurious, if that's a word for it.

A potentially bad QB Class for next year, plus teams that could need QBs in Dallas, Las Vegas, Cleveland, New Orleans, New York Giants, New York Jets, Pittsburgh, LA Rams and Seattle, none of whom have any idea who their long term guy is going to be.

I will laugh so damn hard if the Cowboys let Dak Prescott walk because they think Trey Lance can be the one.

So Washington takes Daniels at #2 to be their new franchise QB, but they also sign Hartman as an undrafted FA. Obviously not the same as drafting a second QB in the 3rd round, but this is feeling a little too much like 2012. I honestly don't even understand how Hartman went undrafted, and I don't understand how the NFL grades quarterbacks anymore. Ten to fifteen years ago, I feel like he's exactly the style of QB teams looked for, and he would have been a 3rd or 4th rounder. But the position has changed so much that now teams are trading up to #10 to draft J.J. F🤬ing McCarthy, on the off chance he has even a fraction of Mahomes' talent (He doesn't).

FWIW, Hartman’s contract with the Commanders is one of the largest for undrafted free agents at $245k guaranteed. He’s likely to make the roster right off the bat. Beating out Jake Fromm and Jeff Driskel for QB3.

Speaking of 2012, Kyle Shanahan had an interview at some point this past season where he described in detail how they had planned to sit at R1P6, draft Ryan Tannehill, then turn around and draft Russell Wilson. Oh, what could’ve been.

For any undrafted free agent QBs, the goal needs to be Cooper Rush or Jake Browning, playing well enough to keep your team competitive and earn a pretty decent contract as one of the better backups in the league.  Time will tell if Tommy Devito or Tyson Bagent have a long term future in the NFL though.  Hartman can have a career in the NFL if he can be Rush or Browning....or unless he's great at the film room, which can get a mediocre QB a 5 or 6 year career (Tim Boyle).

Change the names to RG III and Kirk Cousins and this definitely could be a write up about 2012. Cousins was obvs drafted, but man does this all feel familiar.

:censored:, change the names to Heath Schuler and Gus Ferotte and it could even be about 1992.

Wouldn’t surprise me if Marvin Harrison Jr stays firm on not signing the agreement and ends up selling his own bootleg version of an Ohio State Cardinals jersey for a bit.

I wish there was some way of just posting the relevant one and not both.  Anyway, he's basically protesting a contract that Fanatics offers to college sophomores under the NIL agreement which pays them for exclusive rights to their autograph and other stuff for 4 years, which, depending on when they leave college, could extend into their first two NFL years, where their value is considerably higher (but they take the bag in college, because it's hard to say no.). Harrison didn't take it because he didn't need it, but this is like a "silent protest" against it on behalf of other players, and he'll eventually sign the NFLPA deal.

TL;DR - nothing to see here.

This is kinda fun.  No idea how they keep all the pick numbers straight or get it approved by the league so quickly.  I imagine there has to be cases where someone says something wrong and accidentally tries to trade a pick they don't actually have.  Maybe that's why there's 45 computers in the room.

A blatant ring-chaser with an ego chose the wrong team to ring-chase with. 😆

It's gonna be fun to see him run his own routes and deliver little-to-no production for the team.

The best part about this signing is there’s fans who genuinely think OBJ is still relevant.

If he came to Buffalo he'd be good. Since he's with Miami he's trash.

That's just the way it goes.

Something to get a good chuckle out of. I can't believe anyone really thinks San Antonio/Austin has a chance to bring the Chiefs to town with Jerry and the Texans having votes. A new stadium in Kansas is much more likely.

Not entertaining a potential (and unlikely) Chiefs relocation, but out of curiosity, how many votes would need to be in favor of it happening? Dallas and Houston are only two votes out of the rest of the league, so is there a minimum that would need to be met? I'm asking because I genuinely don't know how that works.

I know that when the Expos were about to relocate to DC, MLB had an owners vote take place and all but one of the owners (Orioles) voted against it. The relocation ultimately went through when the owners' votes met the minimum.
