I'm embarrassed to say I felt the same way. I also thought the Falcons uniforms were some of the coolest things I'd ever seen. As well as the Vikings, Miami Hurricanes and any other team that used random piping and big angled stripes.

Same. Went nuts when the Falcons went mono black for the first time. Of course, I was 20 so I can't exactly claim the ignorance of youth.

I actually used to love these uniforms as a kid when they first debut. It wasn't until the Nike switch when I really started to notice all the problems.

I did like the white ones when they first came out, I also liked the white versions of the Falcons and Vikings from the reebok era, never liked the home/color version of any of those sets though. (I was also between the ages of like 12-15 at the time) They didn't age well though and was tired of them in less than 5 years. Nike definitely made all 3 worse too. Lucky the Vikings' only lasted a year with Nike.

Maybe I just liked new for the sake of new because I like both Cardinals and Vikings sets the reebok crap replaced. The Vikings white UCLA striped jerseys are one of my favorites of all time.

The piping era Falcons present an interesting case study of a design that was meant to have a ton of combinations but the team effectively paired it down to just two plus a throwback as the years passed.

I cannot come up with a similar situation.

The crappy Reebok-era Bills and Vikings uniforms provide another case study - one where the side striping made clear that the set was designed with certain combos in mind, but the team quickly disregarded those combos and wore them how they thought they would look cool. Buffalo’s is especially egregious- while the design is sucky and overcomplicated and too dark, the navy jersey and white pants (and vice-versa) complimented each other, while the mono combos looked like a mismatch. Yet mono was what they generally went with.

Man, I remember when I first signed up on this board and I would express my liking of "old school" uniforms and got made fun of  i.e. Raiders, Cowgirls, Packers, Bears  etc. Then, The 1997 Broncos ruined everything, the NBA had cartoon jerseys and who can forget the 5 3rd jerseys(for now, for the NHL). I think it was the Robo Penguin, Burger KING, Pooh Bear, Wild Wing and Canucks fade. Nothing will top the NBA for ruining the uniform hobby by having 23 jerseys for each team and getting rid of some for teams that need identities i.e. OKC (had  great jerseys 2018-19). Now you have all grown up and hate the piping, cartoon basketball jerseys and one sided striping. Congratulations!!!!! Oh, to really stick it to us, there are ads on jerseys now.🤮

I was like 12 or 13 when the Falcons uniform debuted in 2003. I loved it so much and I was totally hyped over the Madden 2004 cover. Back then Atlanta was an abnormally cool city to the rest of the world, the rap scene they had went national, the Falcons had Vick, they had cool uniforms, they were the popular team and then Vick got hurt and it depressed everybody.

Someone already said this but the Falcons just looked really cool in them. They were a cool team with a cool QB.

I also used to love the piping era. It was slick and they looked faster, if that made any sort of sense. Maybe because they looked like Shadow the Hedgehog and I was a huge fan of the character, like a lot of my friends.

I was super young but I have memories of when a lot of those teams transitioned to the Reebok era and I thought most had the coolest uniforms ever. My young mind thought the Falcons, Cardinals and Seahawks never looked better.

But it only worked on football. The Reebok piping on NBA and NHL teams for whatever reason didn't impress me the same.

I personally never liked that set. The number of different combos was pretty neat, but the set before it (1997-2002) was and remains among my favorites in all of sports, so I was bummed that they changed at all.

Titans original look but in reverse. They used to wear the white pants only with the navy jersey, and the navy pants with the white jersey. Then they added the powder blue jersey, then pants, then started pairing them all over the place. Ruined the look imo.

Yeah I know there are a ton of situations where a set designed for a limited number of combinations turned into an all you can eat buffet (2020 Rams being another).

It's the set designed for unlimited combinations that winds up with only two that I'm calling attention to for its strangeness.

People shouldn’t be embarrassed to love a uniform from their youth that was marketed directly for them. For the culture and trends of the time, the Madden 04 Falcons uniforms were as cool as :censored: and well-designed.

Unfortunately, templates were updated and shoehorning the design onto different uniform cuts became awkward, excessive piping went out of style, the uniform stuck around too long when the team started to get less-adventurous with the combinations in the Ryan years.

Whether you grew up in the softball baseball looks from the 70s or 80s, the 90s NBA or NHL looks, or piping messes of the 00s… you were the target demographic! You should like them.

This is why I sort of roll my eyes at some of the posts around here when people get mad at what the fans want. I know that "Icy" and "Fire" are played out descriptions but the younger folks love the new uniform stuff going around and youth demographic is what drives sports no matter what. I can think a design is trash but I'm not gonna get too upset at teams for trying to tap into getting more eyes and sales on them and I'm certainly not gonna be mad at another fan for having a taste that isn't mine because they're younger minded than I am. I'm 33 but even I'm falling out of what's "cool" these days and I hate it but it is what it is.

I resemble that remark.

You are correct.

I’m still not sure how anybody can look at that early 2000’s Falcon uniform and not just immediately think of electrocuted dogs.

He's never gonna be able to live it down, will he?
