Gee whiz, Chris. Whats up with the boards being down 18 hours straight?

This is the type of service we are paying for? Is there anything we can do to help avoid this type of performance?

If I told you I was happy with the service this past week I'd be lying -- the problem last weekend is unrelated to the problem we had yesterday. Yesterday's problem was the same one we had in December, which was too many database requests going on at the same time (although how we can have 200 users on at one time in January and not crash, and then crash yesterday, is beyond me).

Perhaps yzerfan can answer this question more accurately

I'm going to include a little history lesson into this so that everyone can see where we were, where we are now, and where we could be going...

I wasn't around at the beginning, but as far as I know Chris' site was originally on Tripod and the forums were on ezBoard. These are free, ad-based services where you're stuck with a bunch of limitations in addition to the ads.

The Mad Mac donated server space for the main site to Chris and Tripod was left behind. Around the same time, FanHome let Chris move his boards there and merge them with the rest of the FanHome site. Running the boards remained free for Chris but he no longer owned them. Chris didn't have to worry about server loads or software or any of that for either part of the site.

FanHome got to be a pain in the ass to work with so I offered to let Chris use the space and bandwidth that I wasn't using on my domain to run a new board. We first built the boards as an extension of my site's boards but that didn't last long before we built a seperate system. At this point, Chris had full control of the boards but still didn't have to worry about the tech side of things.

I started working on setting up my own hosting company last spring and moved Chris' boards off of my domain onto his own at that time. I still had space to share, so our agreement that his hosting would be free remained in place. He later moved the main site to that hosting account as well.

By last summer, the site had so much traffic that it was killing my server. I made a deal to switch it to another machine and the problems were fixed for the time being.

Last fall/early winter, those problems came up again and we had to make a decision about the future of the site. We tried trimming it down but what we did wasn't enough. Because limiting access to the site wasn't an option, nor was shutting down parts of the boards, Chris bit the bullet and moved the site to a host that he had to pay for out of his own pocket. The problems were solved but now we had to keep a closer eye on traffic and we had to ask for donations to cover the cost of the hosting.

The donations, last I heard, totalled much more than I expected and would cover over a year's operating expenses at the current rate.

Unfortunately, once again, we've hit the point where our hosting might not be able to cope with the size of the community. Chris and I need to sort out whether the recent problems are more related to the resources needed to operate the site or can be attributed to the lack of response from his host's tech support team.

If it's "just" the tech support team, then staying where we are shouldn't be much of a problem because, aside from the two problems we've had recently, things have run relatively smoothly here.

If we need to upgrade our hosting, we could have a problem. The site is already on a semi-dedicated account, where one server is shared with a small number of large-scale sites. There aren't many higher options than this. If we move to a host that offers a Virtual Private Server, costs will stay down but we'll likely see the site slow down. We could move to a dedicated server, but the cheapest I've seen of those (admittedly, I haven't done much research into it) is more than four times what Chris is paying now and is offered by a hosting company I don't trust.

As I've explained before, it's not a matter of not enough space or not enough bandwidth that makes the hosting situation problematic. It's a matter of the traffic being so high and so steady that it puts a strain on the server.

We've got some things to look at, since the problems we've had recently (while unrelated to each other) are not things that we want to see continue. As I've explained, we've got a handful of options to look at and see what would be best.

I hope that explains everything, my apologies for making this such a long post.

I just wanted to express my gratitude to those who are working to keep this place running. I know a lot of us really enjoy coming here, and we sure appreciate the time you guys are dedicating to maintenance.

Totally agree with ghoti here... you guys are doing all you can, and I appreciate it. I appologize if my first message had a bad tone to it, i was just curious if there was anything we could do.

Chris, since you have a solid history of page views and the sort, any chance to sell ad space? As long as they weren't those crazy flash things that take over the page, i'd be happy to look at some ads to help the site run.

Totally right!

I hope to get some money in order to make a donation... Damn unemployment...

Yzer and Chris, I'd like to offer my help if you need any. I have a good background for this kind of thing, so I might be able to help.

I would also like to express my gratitude for your guy's hard work to keep this place up and running. Any chance you might consider charging for monthly memberships to this board?

Chris, this might not be any of my business but how much are you paying a month for the service?

I'll answer for him... We've been looking at adding ads to the site. We'd like to set up some form of constant revenue-generation so that we can more accurately gauge what monthly costs can be afforded. Right now we're just trying to find an ad provider that won't force us to use pop-ups or any other annoying things like that. Google ads are probably an option. Unfortunately, BurstMedia isn't. If anyone knows of anyone else we should look at, let us know.

Also, just to clarify something that may or may not need clarifying... Although I do some of the tech work and help out where I can, this is still Chris' site. I have no claim to the ownership or anything. I keep seeing myself say "we" in some of these posts and I don't want that to be taken as meaning that this isn't Chris' show. I'm just tech support and a bit of a consultant, if he decides that he wants to throw porn ads on the site, there's nothing I can do about it. :)

Does anyone else see the last scene in Cable Guy whenever the site goes down?

Everytime the site goes down, I see all of us all over the country, turning off our computers and picking up books or spending time with our families.

And then I see JR layed out on top of a satalite.
