Its meant as kind of a sign that you are part of the Oakland Athletics family. Those white shoes should go to the scrapheap of uniforms and equipment right along with the Astros rainbow, the Chisox shorts and skin-tight pajama uniforms. Read my lips- Baseball and football-black shoes only. Basketball-white shoes only, except the 16-time World Champion Boston Celtics must ALWAYS wear black shoes. sj32 Posted July 24, 2005 Share Posted July 24, 2005 I don't think any team other than the A's have worn white shoes since the Astros ditched the rainbow sleeves for the Navy & Gold set in 1994. The Astros had worn white shoes since introducing the rainbow jerseys in 1975. The Padres wore white shoes from about 1976 through the 1984 World Series, going to black shoes when they introduced their brown pinstripe set in 1985. The California Angels wore white shoes in 1973 & 74 while the San Francisco Giants wore white shoes with their orange road jerseys in 1977 and again in 1980. You sometimes will see a player on either team that is wearing white shoes. All you have to do is look in the program and see that they had played their previous year in the Oakland system.
