What's your second team?

Recommended Posts

Listen, my room is decked out in Chiefs stuff, I go to at least 5 Chiefs games a year, and my all time favorite never-going-to-change team is the Kansas City Chiefs. But when I was younger, I got a Jerome Bettis jersey for Christmas one year and I've liked the Steelers ever since. But when the two teams meet, I'm for the Chiefs. What's so wrong about that? My dad's the same way, except he likes the Bucs as a second team because he's visited the area a few times and really likes it, but he still pays for Chiefs season tickets every year. Trust me, if you ever saw me after a Chiefs loss, you'd understand exactly where my faith lies. And, Roger Clemente, GREAT POINT!

In Football Its Green Bay and thats it. Ill root for somebody else when Green Bay gets knocked out usually but I have no other team.

Baseball I love the Blue Jays. I have a bit of an affection for the Tigers casue Ive been to a million games there, as well as the Brewers because I visited there and love the area, but its really just the Blue Jays.

Hockey I root for all Canadian teams, Basketball I root for the Raptors and I guess sort of the Pistons becasue Ive been to a couple games but it's really just the Raptors.

Who wrote the Official Rules of Fandom?

--Roger "Time?" Clemente.

This is a great point. If being a fan means following some prescribed set of guidelines, i'd rather not be a fan.

And plus if you really look at it, there is usually a legit reason why someone likes a second, or even third team. For example with me, My whole family are huge Tennessee Vols fans, in fact i think my first words were Big Orange, but i live close to the University of Nevada Reno and go to their games so they have a special spot in my heart. I think most people are worried that people have second or third teams because they are a backup in case your main team doesnt win, so you can still look like a winner, but thats not usually the case

I have to say that I haven't followed the Premiership at all this season since Southampton were relegated from it. I know Chelsea are top and Everton are bottom but the other 18 teams? No idea.

I do tend to take a team in most sports and not really give too much of a dam about the others in that league. But I have to admit I have a soft spot for teams from Minnesota for some unknowable reason, despite generally rooting for Boston based teams.

When you're looking at 30+ teams a second team is no big deal.

It also can depend on how long you've been a fan.

I watched hockey before the Flames existed--so I had a favorite team before then.

And for the record--if my second team plays my first team I hate them every bit as much as I would if they were playing my least favorite. In the 86 & 89 Cup finals the Canadiens became the enemy. The fact my second team won in 86 wasn't a lot of consolation because my team lost. 89 was sweet retribution.

In any sport I will cheer for any team whose win will help my team.
