*When we unveil the new name, soccer traditionalists are going to be happy with it. It's not a 'Houston Tigers' or any American-type sports franchise name.*

Yeah, because an AMERICAN sports team having an AMERICAN-type sports franchise name is such a horrible horrible thing.

Houston is not in Europe. Nor has the club been around for 200 years either. Stop trying to pass it off as either and give it a real name.

you mean a real name like the one shown on your avatar? lightning? is that a real name? that name stinks. if thats american, then america stinks.

I'm still not convinced that the name change won't have a bit to do with Club America's interest in having a satilite team in MLS

Ive heard rumors that Club America is still in talks with AEG, at this moment, to buy the Houston team. The last rumor I heard was that AEG would still be in charge of construction of a new soccer venue here (as is in DC), which means some sort of partnership. That was termed as happening "very soon" .....as has all rumors been involving Club America and Houston in the past. Guess well wait and see....

My question is, what is Club America's facination with Houston? They are the Yankess of Mexican soccer. Thye could have a team in any city in the US...LA, San Diego, Phoenix, Chicago, New York........but they INSIST ON HOUSTON time and time again. They've been trying to get a team there since 2003, no matter if it was by expansion or by relocation of the Quakes or the Wiz. Youd figure now that AEG moved the Quakes over to Houston and decided not to sell the team, that the rumors would stop.....but NOOOO. Club America is still trying to buy the team....

BTW, I wonder how the name 1836 would fly with Club America if (or when) they become owner? Apparently the fans down in Houston are forming a supporters group to be named 1836....and it has the blessing of the team.

Hey now, no need to insult anybody's homeland.

Suffice it to say that of like that are "American names," then "American names" stink.

And I agree. I'd rather have four Uniteds than one Mutiny or Burn.

Since it appears that the clowns running the Houston club are going to cave to a little pressure from a subsegment of their potential fan abse that is overreaching with this apparent insult, I am still holding out hope for Houston 06. It keeps the German-style theme of the name.

***TANGENT ALERT! [i'll keep it brief...]***

Honestly, WTF to those offended by naming a team with the year the city was founded... that coincidently happened during Texas's fight for independence from Mexico? By that logic, the 76ers and Patriots need to be mindful of the sensitivities of any British citizens or their descendants living here and rename themselves; wouldn't want national or civic pride rubbing salt in a 229-year wound, now would we...

And where does it end? Does the hockey team in San Jose have to change its name to avoid offending victims of shark attacks? How 'bout the hockey teams in Denver, Raleigh and Tampa - thousands of people die from weather-related catastrophes; surely we shouldn't be glorifying that?

Of those taking umbrage at "1836", how many even knew that it stood for the year Houston was founded when this all started, let alone that it was the year Texas broke free from Mexico? The market the club is trying to appease probably won't break allegiances with whatever team(s) they followed to root for an MLS expansion club no matter what they name it. Why they pander to the vocal minority is baffling. At least the Packers got it right when PETA asked them to consider changing their name - they told them to take a hike and minimized discussing it so that PETA's media exposure was kept to a minimum... far less than they were undoubtedly seeking from the issue.

"Start spreading the news... They're leavin' today... Won't get to be a part of it... In old New York..."

In order for the Mets' run of 12 losses in 17 games to mean something, the Phillies still had to win 13 of 17.

The Houston 1836 T-shirts are up for sale again at the MLS online shop.  I"m not gonna jump to conclusions just off of that, but perhaps sanity has taken hold here?

no, sanity would actually be if they moved them back where they belong in san jose

amen to that. san jose has to realize their baseball dreams won't work out for them soon.

My belief is, the reason the name is being changed, was that if Club America was to join up with this new team, they would probably want a name they find less offensive.

As for Club America's interest in Houston, I do not know why it is so. Perhaps they didn't want to tread on LA, and Houston became the closest, and largely hispanic choice.

The blog Logan's Revenge is now reporting that Houston 1836's new identity will be "Eastern European interesting, maybe even say... Russian interesting." Speculation is that the club may end up being named either Dynamo Houston or Locomotive Houston.

They both sound a little forced to me, but at least Locomotive Houston would play off the area's history in railroading (like the big choo-choo at Minute Maid Park).

Yeah, they need to realize that Sacramnto is gonna crush those dreams. :D

It's also likely that Houston is an attractive target since they know Anschutz is looking to sell some of his MLS franchises. It's probably easiest to target the one closest to Mexico than wait for the next expansion team.

But that's just a guess.

I'd think San Antonio would be a better choice, hispanically speaking. Of course, Who knows what kind of a soccer town it is.

Actually, it wouldn't. MLS tried to expand there but was driven out of town. SA wants the NFL, nothing more, nothing less.

:cursing::cursing: Mayor hardaberger is an idiot. :cursing: After the town actually voted for the MLS to come, he is the one who pulled the plug. Granted MLS would have gotten more than SA out of the deal, initially, but at least we wouldn't be wasting $2 mil a year for the Alamodome to host nothing. MLS would have gotten 18 free dates(the city pays for the stadium), but considering the Mexican national team would have had double headers, which the MLS would get $0 for and the city would collect the cash, a sellout crowd for the Mexico match followed by an MLS fame would have made the city a good bit of cash, especially considering that SA's team would be playing during the heaviest parts of tourist season here.
