Lest ye forget that ESPN does stand for Entertainment and Sports Programming Network they're just fulfilling the "Entertainment" part of their name with useless crap that someone apparently finds entertaining. Next you're gonna see Professional Valet Parking competitions or something else rediculous that doesn't need ANY airtime whatsoever

Exactly. Anyone who didn't realize they were reverting to this when they started airing "Major League Eating" contests just wasn't paying attention.

Hey, this stuff's mindless, it doesn't hurt anyone, it puts some coin in the pockets of some folks who normally wouldn't see it, and besides - Major League Baseball, the NFL and NCAA football/basketball can't run 24/7 year-round.

There are plenty of legitimate sports that are played around the world but aren't popular in the US (i.e. Aussie rules football, rugby, hurling, etc.) that ESPN could be airing instead of this crap.

Exactly. And if ESPN aired them, they would be popular. I would LOVE to see hurling and rugby on TV regularly. They can't possibly cost too much to air and odn't even to be live.

It should be noted that ESPN is hardly the first, or the only current, TV sports outlet to feature, ahem, borderline sporting events. Old-schoolers may recall that ABC's Wide World of Sports invented the "trash sports" genre in the '70s before ESPN, and today FSN is just as guilty of it as ESPN, at least when it comes to poker. (At least ESPN only carries the WSOP and the U.S. Poker Championship. Meanwhile FSN carries the Poker Superstars series, plus some tournament in Monte Carlo, plus some other tournament sponsored by Bodog, plus something called the "Poker Dome Challenge" - WTF is a "poker dome" anyway? - and I know I'm missing one or two other ones.)

Also, it's not just TV sports that have been bitten by the poker bug. Here in the Twin Cities we have at least two major sporting goods store chains (Dick's and Sports Authority) and they both carry poker chip sets.
