Super Bowl XLII

I'm off to bed. Giants, great game. You played your hearts out and you deserved the win. However, if I hear one more person on campus call this the "greatest upset in sports history", I might explode.

Congrats!

I'm with you on that. Not even close.

Ditto. I was just talking with my brother about that tonight. Chaminade/Virginia, Nova/Georgetown, NC State/Georgetown, USA/Russia and George Mason/UConn were all bigger. The Giants had been by far the hottest team through the playoffs, and I definitely thought they could win.

I won't make a big deal about how all this heckling and arrogance is kind of hypocritic[sp?] after all you have accused Boston fans of.

Maybe you need to back off a bit. I accept the loss. That is all.

You're kidding right? And the word you're attempting to misuse is hypocritical. This isn't hypocrisy, it's payback and by the looks of it, it's a bitch. Relax, we'll have our fun for a few days and then we'll move on to something else. It's not personal, well maybe just a little. :P

Greatest upset in SPORTS history? Nah. Not by a long shot.

Greatest upset in FOOTBALL history? Arguable, considering the circumstances surrounding this game.

Greatest upset in SUPER BOWL history? Absolutely.

Not quite I would rank it second biggest Super Bowl history before Super Bowl III the AFL was regarded as Minor League Football and the Super Bowl was pointless, then the Jets beat the Colts.

Well, its one of the best upsets ive seen in sports. Not sure about greatest, buts its up there with Steve Bradbury and the like.

Has anyone brought out the choker tag? No? Okay, I'm calling the Pats a bunch of chokers. Couldn't handle the pressure and the Giants excelled under the big-game pressure. That is all.

Agreed. In 10 years from now, this will probably still be known as the biggest upset in SB history.

Honest to God here, not to be a jerk, but what's closer?

I can think of the 1980 US hockey upset. I know there's probably a handful of other big upsets. But an undefeated NFL team against a wild card team?

That's HUGE. Very arguably the biggest.

And trust me, I feel the pain, as the Patriots beating (rhymes with another word...) the Rams in 36 was often labled that huge upset and it killed me.

But seriously? What's obviously bigger.

Im kinda torn on this game. The majority of it was probably one of the most worthless games i've ever seen. 7-3 at halftime was downright pitiful. There were two of the most epic plays i've probably ever seen in a super bowl, and that definately raised the level of excitement, but for me its nowhere near the best Super Bowl i've ever seen. Sice he came into the league i've been really back and fourth on Eli Manning. At first I was a big fan, but then I saw some of his on field decision making and kinda gave up on him. This playoff run he just led proves to me that Eli is definately the stud he was made out to be, and I gotta respect that.

Half-kidding. I'm just really pissed right now. Of course it's not personal, except most of your post which was directed at me(:)). This may be a few-day thing for you, but I don't think I'll ever get past this.(like 2003 Aaron Boone).

I see where you're coming from but keep in mind that The Patriots only beat The Giants by three in the regular season. I think that alone makes this much less of an upset than it's being made out to be. It's not like no one picked The Giants to win. But if you want some examples of bigger upsets here a couple that happened just a few months ago.

App. State over Michigan

Stanford over USC

So no, I don't think this was that big a deal. Everyone knew The Giants were capable of winning the game. Just because a bunch of gangsters in Vegas decided they needed a reason to get people to bet on The Giants doesn't make this some historical event. Hell, half the people I saw pick the game on TV today picked The Giants.

And you wonder why you get a hard time. Since Aaron Boone, the Red Sox have won two World Series(es). Since 2001, the Patriots have won three Super Bowls. Does that mean you can't complain about them losing tonight? No, no it doesn't. But does it mean maybe you might want to shrug your shoulders just a little bit?

For Christ's sake -- your team is the first to have ever gone 16-0 in a regular season. That's still pretty good.

I believe that 4th quarter even topped the Rams-Titans game. That was easily the best all-around Super Bowl that I have ever seen. It even tops Elway's 1st Super Bowl against the Packers.

Eh, personally wouldn't agree with that, but I'm a Rams fan and was WAY more into the game, but it definitely was one of the best endings in a SB.

Has anyone brought out the choker tag? No? Okay, I'm calling the Pats a bunch of chokers. Couldn't handle the pressure and the Giants excelled under the big-game pressure. That is all.

I wouldn't call the Pats chokers. First of all the Giants were hot all throughout the playoffs, and were clearly a good team. It's not like the Patriots were playing the Rams or anything :D

Secondly, they were just outplayed and out-coached. I didn't see it as choking, they just played a team who was more prepared and wanted the win more than they did.

Cardinals -- Rams -- Blues -- Tigers -- Liverpool

I don't like New York... I guess I just don't like Eli Manning, and the Manning Super Bowl tradition lives on. I also didn't watch most of the game (only the last NY drive, actually), and it sounds like I didn't miss much. So regardless of being the biggest upset in Super Bowl history, it wasn't a phenomenal game from what I've heard. You have to respect the Giants, though, for pulling a Steelers and showing that the Wild Card isn't worthless.

Mercury Morris Raps

CHORUS

DO YOU KNOW WHAT IT TAKES

TO GO AND WIN EVERY GAME

YOU GOT TO GO UNDEFEATED

AIN'T NEVER GONNA HAPPEN AGAIN

MERCURY MORRIS VERSE 1

PICTURE US LOSIN' TO ANOTHER TEAM WE PLAYED

WAY BACK IN THE DAY YOU SAID THE RECORD WAS MADE

WE POSTED UNDEFEATED STATS THAT NOBODY COULD MATCH

GOT PEOPLE LOOKIN' BACK AND SAYIN', "MAN, HOW'D THEY DO THAT?'

WELL THE ANSWER IS SIMPLE IF YOU BUSTERS JUST DO THE MATH

EVERYBODY GOT BEAT EACH TIME THEY STEPPED IN OUR PATH

YOU MIGHT SAY IT'S A FLUKE THE DOLPHINS WON EVERY GAME

SOMEBODY SHOW ME THE TEAM YOU SAY WHO'S RECORD'S THE SAME

WHAT?

WHEN YOU FINALLY SEE THE LIGHT AND THE TRUTH IS A MUST

THERE'S NOT ANOTHER TEAM INSIDE THE PERFECT CIRCLE BUT US

SINCE WE RAN THE TABLE ON `EM IT AIN'T BEEN THE SAME

YOU WANNA GO UNDEFEATED YOU GOT WIN EVERY GAME

I KNOW YOU WONDER!

CHORUS

DO YOU KNOW WHAT IT TAKES TO GO AND WIN EVERY GAME

YOU GOT TO GO UNDEFEATED

IT AIN'T NEVER GONNA HAPPEN

MERCURY MORRIS VERSE 2

I KNOW YOU WONDER WHAT IT'S LIKE TO LACE UP THE SHOES OF A

PLAYER STEPPIN' ON THE FIELD WITHOUT A THING TO LOSE

THE BUSTERS POSIN' UP THE VIEW ON ESPN, ASKIN' ME THAT STUPID QUESTION,

"YOU THINK THEY'LL DO IT AGAIN?"

ONCE AGAIN I'M HOLDIN' SCHOOL ABOUT THE THOUGHT OF DEFEAT

I GOT NO LOSSES ON MY TABLE SO YOU CAN'T TAKE MY SEAT

MY PERFECT HISTORY WILL TELL YOU THAT THE RECORD'S COMPLETE

STAND UP! YOU BUSTER'S PLAYIN' IF YOU TASTED DEFEAT

EVERY YEAR THEY TRY TO BUST OUT TRYIN' TO CAPTURE THE CROWN

I BEEN TRYIN' TO TELL YOU BUSTERS, YOU CAN'T PLAY IN OUR TOWN

AND THE ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION IS STILL THE SAME

YOU WANNA GO UNDEFEATED YOU GOT TO WIN EVERY GAME

I KNOW YOU WONDER!

CHORUS

DO YOU KNOW WHAT IT TAKES TO GO AND WIN EVERY GAME?

YOU GOT TO GO UNDEFEATED

OH, IT'S NEVER GONNA HAPPEN AGAIN!

HAVE YOU GOT WHAT IT TAKES TO GO AND WIN EVERY GAME?

OH, YOU GOT TO GO UNDEFEATED

IT AIN'T NEVER GONNA HAPPEN AGAIN!

MERCURY MORRIS VERSE 3

SO YOU CHALLENGE MY RECORD WITH A COMPUTER SCHEME?

USIN" NFL FILMS TO MAKE A FIELD OF DREAMS?

SO ON PAPER WE LOST TO ANOTHER TEAM?

BUT THAT WAS FANTASTY FOOTBALL, NOT THE REAL THING

OUR PARKIN' SPOT IS IN FRONT OF EVERYBODY'S RECORD BOOK

IF YOUR MEMORY IS HAZY, GO BACK AND TAKE ANOTHER LOOK

AT THE STATS WE POSTED WHEN WE MADE THE CLIMB

TO THE TOP OF THE SPORTS WORLD, AND YOU CAN'T DENY

LOOK AT HOW MANY TIMES WE PUT UP THE CROWN

IT'S UP TO 35 YEARS AND WE'RE STILL AROUND

IT'S NOT A SECRET HOW WE DID IT, THE EQUATION'S THE SAME

YOU WANNA GO UNDEFEATED, YOU GOT TO WIN EVERY GAME

I KNOW YOU WONDER!

CHORUS

DO YOU KNOW WHAT IT TAKES TO GO AND WIN EVERY GAME?

IT'S NEVER GONNA HAPPEN AGAIN!

HAVE YOU GOT WHAT IT TAKES TO GO AND WIN EVERY GAME?

YOU GOT TO GO UNDEFEATED!

IT AIN'T NEVER GONNA HAPPEN AGAIN!

MERCURY MORRIS VERSE 4

NOW I'M INVITIN' ALL YOU BUSTERS TO A STATE OF PERFECTION

WHERE A LOSS IN A GAME IS AUTOMATIC REJECTION

YOU WANT TO COME DOWN AND JOIN US DOWN IN MIA?

JUST LIKE CHICAGO DID IN '85, THEY CAME TO PLAY

BUT THEY FORGOT THE JINX WAS ON WHEN THEY STEPPED OFF IN THE ROOM

THAT'S WHEN DANNY DUMPED UP ON `EM IN THE TEMPLE OF DOOM

SHULA PSYCHED `EM OUT TO PLAY LIKE IT WAS `72

SO THE PERFECT SEASON STAYED WITH THE PERFECT CREW

HOW COINCIDENTAL IS IT THAT THE BEARS ONLY TEST

WOULD BE TO COME DOWN TO MIAMI TO GET THAT WEIGHT OFF THEIR CHEST?

YOU KNOW YOU THE PATH TO GOIN' UNDEFEATED IS ALWAYS THE SAME

YOU WANNA GO UNDEFEATED, YOU BETTER REMEMBER MY NAME!

I KNOW YOU WONDER!

CHORUS

DO YOU KNOW WHAT IT TAKES TO GO AND WIN EVERY GAME?

IT'S NEVER GONNA HAPPEN AGAIN!

HAVE YOU GOT WHAT IT TAKES TO GO AND WIN EVERY GAME?

YOU GOT TO GO UNDEFEATED!

MERCURY MORRIS VERSE 5

NOW LET ME END THIS CONVERSATION WITH SOME FRIENDLY ADVICE

SOME THINGS THAT HAPPEN ONCE IN A LIFE, THEY WON'T HAPPEN TWICE

SO DON'T TRY TO RUN THE TABLE; CAUSE BY YOU, THAT CAN'T BE DONE

YOU SEE, THE 16 STRAIGHT IN '72, WAS JUST TO PLAY IN ONE

HM-HM (CHUCKLE OF IRONY)

ANY GIVEN SUNDAY, PLAYER, EXCEPT IN `72

CHORUS

IT AIN'T NEVER GONNA HAPPEN AGAIN

MERCURY MORRIS VERSE 6

NOW GO ON ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS

COACH, FLIP THAT BAD BOY OVER SO THEY CAN GRADUAT

Yes, I do wonder. Yes, they've won it twice since Boone. Does that make it any better? Maybe just a little bit.

Yes, they went 16-0. But you have to go 19-0 to make it count. I doubt they'll ever go 16-0 again, don't you? I'll never stop wondering about what could have been--especially since it was so damn close.

Good point, trinity (that stands for "IQ of 3", correct?). You forgot to mention that the Patsie organization denied videotaping the Rams' SB walkthrough, too. So, it must be true. Now go to bed, and leave the discussion board to the adults. Nighty-night.

HAHAHAHAH!!!! You stupid chowda-heads.....you couldnt even win as a 16 point fav. At least the vegas dog bettors are your fans tonight....cause you have no others.

You cheat your way through the regular season, then you rely on favorable refs to get you through the playoffs....and you still couldnt win the big one!!! Thank God Im not from Boston.

I'm with you, Ravensfan -- and if the rumors are true about the Patsies videotaping the Rams' SB walkthrough, it'll make the Black Sox scandal look like a neighborhood poker game. There's not enough silver polish in the world to keep those three Lombardi Trophies from tarnishing. Anybody know where the Globe's "19-0" book can be purchased?

It's not like the Yankees ended up winning the World Series that year. For all we know Boston could also have fallen victim to them as well.

Also....newspaper sites are dens of insanity. Don't take too much offense.

For the easy schedule crowd, they are playing the NFC West.
