CC97
That would be putting a woman in a position of authority over boys, he was told ? a scenario that was contrary to beliefs at St. Mary?s Academy. --- Chris Creamer Founder/Editor, SportsLogos.Net "The Mothership" • News • Facebook • X/Twitter • Instagram

NJTank
I saw this on the news, and the funny thing is this school as female teachers, which um makes this whole argument moot and makes St. Mary's look bad. www.sportsecyclopedia.com For the best in sports history go to the Sports E-Cyclopedia at http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com

Andy
Well, we all know the church's strict rules about men exercising their authority over young boys.Yes, I know. I'm like ten years late with this joke. Sorry. Someone had to.

hecticbro
It's a private school, isn't it? While it seems to be a bogus decision to those of us who have 21st-century sensibilities, I don't see how we'd have any right to tell them how to run things on their private campus. Epiphanic
I believe that the game itself doesn't fall under St. Mary's jurisdiction. While as a private school they have an legitmate argument to separate boys and girls within their school, that "right" ceases during inter-school matches which would fall under the purview of the state high school league. If Ms. Campell (the referree) is eligible to officiate a boys basketball game, then she should be allowed to officiate any match regardless of the schools involved. St. Mary's has no right to refuse Ms. Campbell under this circumstance in my opinion.P.S. If St. Mary's requested that they be given only male referees for their games by the state high school league, I see no problem with that. My point is they don't get the final say. -kj
So, if she's assigned to their game and they don't want to be officiated by them, they can forfeit. Not exactly solving the problem--their ridiculous views--but, hey, that's their choice. Play or forfeit. The fact that this happened in Kansas doesn't really surprise me much. udubs03
I know this is going to make me sound completely sexist, but I really like my sports to stay separated by gender. I know there a lot of competent female referees and I'm not trying to discredit them at all, but I think men should ref men's games and women should ref women's games. Same goes for coaching, IMO. It also bothers me when I go to a girls varsity game and all the refs are men.
FiddySicks
I would really like to hear from someone who lives near the Topeka area. Are people really that insanely illogical when it comes to religious issues? I mean come on, this, Westboro Baptist Church, ect ect. Somethings gotta give. You don't go to a professional game to see what gender the refs or coaches are, so why should a varsity game be any different? I saw, I came, I left. Chief.
I would really like to hear from someone who lives near the Topeka area. Are people really that insanely illogical when it comes to religious issues? I mean come on, this, Westboro Baptist Church, ect ect. Somethings gotta give.I went to Catholic school for 6 years in western Kansas. My best friend's family walked out on a sermon in one of the churches because the priest was explaining how it was necessary to punish your wife violently to keep her in her place. One priest who came to the classrooms and talked to us kids about various religious issues said women should be allowed to become priests. He had to pack it up and move to another town. That's just the town I live in, though. Full of idiots.
Ez Street
I would really like to hear from someone who lives near the Topeka area. Are people really that insanely illogical when it comes to religious issues? I mean come on, this, Westboro Baptist Church, ect ect. Somethings gotta give.Look, when it comes to these things you have to look at how is involved.First off, everyone in Topeka aside from Westboro Baptist Church hates Fred Phelps. So it is not indicative of our culture here in the Capital city.As for St. Mary's, well it's an uber-traditional catholic school, in a small town about 20 minutes from here. I don't agree with what transpired, but then again I'm not catholic or even close to being catholic.Topeka is really no different than any other town. We have our nut balls like everyone else does.If someone thinks that Topeka is full of religious zealots, then they would be making the same type of mistake that John Rocker did talking about NYC.But I guess it goes to show you, two bad apples do spoil the bunch.Everyone that has commented about this locally is against it. Hope that addresses your questions. @DavidStreeter
