DDR
I completely forgot this league was going to happen. It sounded like an interesting idea way back when, but this is hardly surprising. Whether it's now or in a year, it was almost inevitable.
Mac the Knife
Don't look now, but the UFL may not be far behind it. I was just over at OurSportsCentral where I read a thread in which an UFL employee alleged that things were on track (team names, owners, logos, etc.) for an August 8th debut. On that I checked USPTO and found they've trademarked NOTHING, which to me says that they won't be around in 2008, or 2009 for that matter.I'm beginning to think my "United Spring Football League" idea might be worth pursuing. Apparently there are at least a few people out there with some money they're willing to lose in pursuit of owning their own football franchise. FiddySicks
Wow, thats really a bummer. Just the other day I caught myself up to speed on the league and saw that guys like Clint Stoerner, Tee Martin, Peter Warrick, Chris Leak, Eric Crouch, and a few more joined up to play. On that I checked USPTO and found they've trademarked NOTHING, which to me says that they won't be around in 2008, or 2009 for that matter.According to a former print journalism colleague of mine who covered the NFL combine, UFL Commissioner Michael Hyughue revealed during the combine that his league had made a decision to push back its kick-off to August of 2009. Huyghue said that the move was made in order to line-up the last two franchises for an anticipated eight-team launch. He also alluded to the fact that additional ownership candidates and representatives of potential markets have been approaching the league, meaning that the 2009 launch will take place with a minimum of eight franchises. As for whether "ItsNotScottishThenItsCrap" is actually a UFL employee, I'm going to surmise - based on the tone and content of his post - that's not the case. Of course, as is always the case with these ventures, we shall see.

Trademarks can now be filed electronically via the internet, whereas a quarter century ago it was a pretty lengthy process. The USFL had their trademarks - all of them for the original dozen teams - registered almost a year in advance of the league's debut. Unless I'm missing something in the USPTO searching I've done, the UFL hasn't even trademarked their league logo yet.
rvrdgsfn
OMG I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS IS HAPPENING!!!!!IT HAD SUCH A FUTURE, THIS CAN'T BETHIS IS A SAD DAY!!!yeah this league was doomed since day 1.

Unless I'm missing something in the USPTO searching I've done, the UFL hasn't even trademarked their league logo yet.I haven't read too much in to that, Mac. It strikes me that guys like William Hambrecht, Tim Armstrong and Mark Cuban aren't overly interested in what the league's initial logo is going to be. They're much more likely to be interested in what the individual franchise brands are, as those names and logos will be counted upon to generate revenue through licensed product sales. As you pointed out, the trademarks of the USFL franchises were "registered almost a year in advance" of that league's debut. The UFL still has time to play with to match that feat. Not much time, but some.As for the UFL's current logo, I'm surmising that they haven't trademarked it along with the league's name because they're going to dump it once they've hired a top-notch branding outfit to work on the team identities. The league's current logo looks like a ClipArt, football-version knock-off of the MLB and NBA logos. It was probably thrown together so that the league would have something to accompany its name at the initial announcement. When - okay, if - the UFL finally gets the signatures of committed owners on the dotted line, the initial investors will okay the hiring of a branding firm. Then we'll see said investors actually spend the dough to trademark everything - including a professionally-designed league logo - in one fell swoop. I still say it is 50/50 - at best - that the UFL ever plays a down of football. If it does actually kick-off in August of 2009, I say that it lasts three seasons - tops - trying to go head-to-head with the NFL and college football in the fall. That said, Michael Huyghue has indicated that the league will make a major announcement at the end of March regarding the location of the first six franchises, the identity of the first six ownership groups and the details surrounding the league's broadcast deal. If there's another postponement announced at that time, "stick a fork in" the league - it's done. If franchise sites, owners and a broadcast deal are announced, then we'll start to see some concrete movement on the identity front.
CDuffy26
I'm not surprised the AAFL folded, although it would probably be a week or two into the season. Now I wouldn't be surprised if the UFL moves to spring of '09, now that it's spring competion is over and done with. Interesting Baseball fact: In 1960: Baltimore, Milwaukee, Cincinnati, and Pittsburgh had 2 AAA affiliates, while Los Angeles had 3 teams...and the New York Yankees had the Kansas City Athletics.Interesting Hockey fact: In 1974, the Buffalo Sabres draft Taro Tsujimoto of the Toyko Katanas with th 183 pick in the draft. It was later revealed that Taro didn't exist, but Taro is still listed as an offical draftee of the Buffalo Sabres in their Media Guide.
