But hasn't Phil had to deal with more competition? How many teams were in the league during Red's time? And how restrictive were contracts?

It seems like making a good team and keeping a good team together are harder now. And wasn't Russell on something like all of Red's teams? Phil has won championships with four completely different teams. I think that means something, doesn't it?

I don't know that I have a dog in this race, but I tend to think that based on the level of athlete and competition, whatever current era we're in is generally better and more talented than previous eras. To me, Phil Jackson has accomplished more than Red Auerbach as coach of a team.

Russell left the Celtics bitterly after he retired and went to Seattle. He was "present" for 11 of the 16 championships. Don't forget however Red won titles with 3 different generations of players. To me in all honesty the deciding factor is that Red built teams, Phil coached 'em. As a coach? Sure you could have a serious discussion about Jackson being number 1. As an all around basketball god, if you will, no there's no debate. It's Auerbach.

And Shaq just reminded me...Adam Morrison has a ring now. Wow.

How's my ass taste, JJ?

I guess this officially pushes Jackson above Auerbach for the greatest coach of all time, huh?

I'm afraid not.

NBA coaches are just babysitters. Players now win championships. Look at Doc Rivers. 2 years ago he looked like the worst coach in the league. They get KG and Ray Allen and he is considered one of the top 3?

I never saw Red coach. But I have watched Phil coach for 20+ years, and while I think he does a good job, he has never "wowed" me. He has had MJ, Pippen, Kobe and Shaq on his team.

Yep, that's all true. I mean, he had Jordan or Kobe (often as well as Shaq or Pippen) for all of them, which is probably equal to having Russell/Cousy/whoever for all of them. It's near impossible to compare playing talent across eras, IMO, so I won't make any sort of claim. I tend to agree with Speedy about the patriarchal aspect, plus, even though there were fewer teams in the 60s, he won EIGHT in a row and NINE in ten years. To me that is just unmatchable and a dealbreaker. Then he retired early one year later for the good of the franchise in his eyes. There's no way to ever settle this absolutely, like Bonds vs. Ruth, etc., but that's just my opinion. (but I'm a Celtics fan so I'm biased anyway.) There are many aspects in which Phil is more impressive and there are several aspects where Red is more impressive. It's all opinion I guess.

The fact he was able to hold such alpha dog personalities sufficiently in check and keep them focused on winning is rather impressive in my book.

Even though a lot of people don't like Kobe, I do. I'm glad he got a ring on his own. Congrats Kobe. Congrats to all the Lakers, besides Adam Morrison. He didn't do :censored:.

And y'all doubted me when I said the Western Conference team would win this series easily. Puh-leeze.

You also had Cleveland sweeping Orlando.

I'd say Phil's greatest coaching achievement was when he took that 03/04 team to the Finals. I read his book on that season, and that was a CRAZY ass locker room. It's a miracle that he could coach that team up with all the ego and dysfunction on that team that year.

And Shaq just reminded me...Adam Morrison has a ring now. Wow.

 He's this year's Darko! :D

I saw, I came, I left.

Props to the Lakers on yet another world championship. Yeah, they got damn lucky when Orlando knocked off C-Town in the ECF, but nonetheless, it's banner No. 15 for the Lake-Show. I would have to say this pretty much solidifies Kobe as the single best player of this decade.

As a sidenote, it's sucks that Mark Madsen won't be participating in the Lakers' championship rally this time around. I think everyone's gotta be a bit vexed about this, which could explain the rioting in L.A. this morning. :P

You said an easy sweep. You were wrong. You don't get partial credit.

Try again next year.

Surely you know he would've said the same thing had the Lakers won in 7, right? :P

He's this year's Darko!

Darko actually stepped on the court to play for a few minutes in the finals. Morrison hasn't played a second with the lakers.

He played for them in a few regular season games.

Although it was more than awkward for him to be wearing the hat and spraying the champagne while wearing a suit.

And one day he'll tell his grandkids that he won an NBA Championship and soaked Kobe with some champagne.

Or he could do what Brian Scalabrine is gonna do and just tell his grandkids that he was the hero of the Finals. Not like they'll know the difference anyway :P

"And then, after I hit the game-winner at the end of game five over a fallen JJ Reddick, I celebrated by looking down on him, asking him to "Tell me how my mustache tastes," and then jumped up and down with Kobe Bryant and the rest of his fellow benchwarmers. Ahhhh, those were the days."

There was talk on LA Sports Radio today that the Lakers should sign him to a one-day contract just to be in the parade.

They were also joking that they would pay the salary, and that they really need him because it's not like Adam Morrison will do it lol.
