They can, if they want to, by picking the best options from the Mountain West and AAC. San Diego State, Fresno State, SMU, Memphis and Tulane immediately come to mind. Boise State purely for football reasons could, too. Maybe Rice to get Dallas AND Houston in the conference. It won't be a power conference anymore, and some of these schools are ripe for the picking by the power 4 at anytime, but it would at least salvage what's left as best as possible. But I'm not sure if those who ARE a real possibility of eventually landing in a power conference, would leave one group of 5/6 conference for another.

RIP Pac-# Conference, 1915-2024.

That's it. The conference is dead in the water. Oregon State and Washington State are most likely bound for the Mountain West. Even if they manage to pull some of those schools into the "Pac" name, it won't be the same and it definitely won't be a power conference anymore as those are the two power conference schools with the least amount of power conference clout. San Diego State wouldn't go unless they're still given the opportunity to leave for a power conference at anytime. They turned down an invite when it was only known that UCLA and USC were leaving. They're not going to go now when it's no different than, or most likely even worse than, their current situation. Plus, it's only a matter of time before they get an invite from the Big 12 or ACC.

Every team will change their pant color to khaki.

Just like in the 20s and 30s.

Honestly surprised the Big Ten didn't take Cal and Stanford to both secure the Bay Area market, and have all the major west coast D1 programs in their conference. The scenario for Wazzu and Oregon State may be to join the Mountain West. I doubt any of remaining power conferences want either of them.

On paper Wazzu and Oregon State would likely be the top teams in the MWC for pretty much every sport in the first couple of years. Guess it depends on how many current athletes would transfer out.

Can someone explain to a non-college sports fan why those two schools were so unattractive to any of the major conferences?  Is it just on-field performance? Or that they’re not worth anything from a TV market / revenue standpoint?

I think geography was the biggest issue, since since the bulk of the teams in the other power conferences are in the eastern-central parts of the country.

Wazzu is legitimately in the middle of nowhere almost in Idaho and an 80 mile drive from the closest airport in Spokane.  Other than Ryan Leaf and Klay Thompson (and the late Mike Leach using it as a rebound gig) it has nothing going for it.  Plus the athletic facilities aren't great.

OrSt is closer to Portland than Oregon but other than just having its football stadium renovated it's not really much of anything.  Sure, there's a small Nike connection but not in the same galaxy as that down in Eugene.

So, both schools were definitely lower echelon in the PAC and not exactly what a Power 4 conference would covet.
