The Cornucopia of Possible NBA Logo Changes

Clippers greatly improved their script...but thanks to Conrad it sucks again. One of those things you can't un-see once it's pointed out. Also, is it just the image, my monitor, or my eyes (or my hopes and dreams) or does that Blue look a liiiiiiiiiittle bit lighter? Werx can deny this, but I have already convinced myself they are making their Blue lighter gradually year by year and eventually it'll be Light Blue again.

It hasn't changed. It's just bad digital color thanks to the NBA. I'm convinced that the NBA doesn't have the first clue about color spaces and/or accurately representing color on computer monitors. Nor do I think that they care.

Here's the Clippers' Blue as a spot/solid color:

LosAngelesClippersBlue_9999_SOL_SRG.png

The same Blue used in the NBA logo, the Pistons, and the new Warriors' color palette (among others).

Then, they specify a "standardized" Blue for production:

LosAngelesClippersBlue_9999_PRD_SRG.png

Then they match the Production Blue to a Pantone Textile:

LosAngelesClippersBlue_9999_TEX_SRG.png

...which by the way has the most unfortunate color description for any Pantone Textile.

Now I'll admit that I haven't seen the latest color specs, but I'd be shocked if it had changed. Remember - especially in regards to the NBA - there is a very limited color palette...not a lot of variation between Blues and Reds. I would be shocked if the Clippers were to specify a different color not previously used.

Clippers new logo updated on the draft list...

Not just that, but they also revised the script logo

Wonder if they maybe going with something like this on their rumored new jerseys?? I personally like the script change, I was a fan of the previous one, but I like the new outline of it. It seems as though the Clippers aren't even going to announce or unveil their new logos, just kind of slowly integrate the new logo. Up until even a couple days ago, they were using the old logo on their website but now the newer version is plastered on the site, but without even an official announcement.

I think a full out unveil wouldve been pretty pointless. Personally, I think quietly dropping the new (and I use that term loosely) logo on us quietly was the best move. Had they gone for a full out ceremony, it wouldve been bashed worse than the Warriors new look by the likes of us... But either way, same ol' Clips.

BTW, good to see you back posting again.

Sorry if this has already been brought up, but there was an awful lot of grey on the Clippers' draft hat. Any chance the uniforms will have some grey highlights added to it?

EDIT: I spent my 200th post bringing up the Clippers? Really?

Hello all, I've been a lurker for a while now, but this is my first post. I've been a long time uniform/logo observant.

I have a question for those more in the know. I noticed that at the bottom of the letters of the Clippers script, the letters appear to allude to water/waves/ocean, which of course would be appropriate given the name. Is this something that's been known? (i've never heard of it before) or is it something nobody's ever caught?

haha good point, I guess as a Clippers fan, I just kinda hope for anything I can get in terms of media exposure, but ya, a full blown press conference and what not would have been a bit much, but with arguably one of the best drafts this year, I really believe the Clippers are headed in the right direction, even if their look isn't necessarily haha

P.S. The clippers most likely will be getting new jerseys, it would be a little weird for them to update the script officially and then still use the old script for their 10'-11' jerseys, even if thats all they update. But it is the Clippers after all...so who knows??

Take note, Golden State: the Clippers' refresh, along with the Timberwolves' and Hornets' recent updates, are textbook examples of how to gracefully update and tweak an aging design.

Couldn't have said it any better. The Warriors took a great opportunity and shoved it right down the crapper. They just went from having a "meh, it's not bad" identity to having THE worst in the league. Sad thing is, the new logo is actually alright. But thuer execution on everything else has really killed it. Lazy uniforms and all.

What? "update and tweak" an aging design? Their goal wasn't to update and tweak... but to fully redesign (same with the Wolves, since you used them as an example.) The design teams for the Clippers had totally different instrux than the ones for the Warriors. The Warriors new set is basically an entirely new design that borrows elements from past designs, but is hardly an "update" or a "tweak".

The Wolves kept the same structure of thier logo (save some cleaning and a heavy addition of white), kept the same font (as well as general idea) for thier jerseys, and didn't change thier colors. All the did was said cleaning to logo, introduced a new alternate logo, and got a new jersey template. That's an update, not a redesign. And we know what the intent was by Golden State, what Lights Out was trying to say (at least how I interpreted it), was that the Warriors SHOULD'VE taken the same route that teams like Minnesota, New Orleans, and the Clippers took.

I saw this graphic on the Jazz's website. Do you think it could be the pattern of their new court's sideline or maybe even the piping on their unis? Maybe just a generic design?

Maybe something along these lines?

Honestly, I've never seen it as such, but it's a really good observation, and is a really great, yet subtle, element that really adds to that script. My gut tells me that it's coincidence, but it's still really nice.

I still don't have a website, but I have a dribbble now! http://dribbble.com/andyharry

I would love it if the Warriors went with an update of this as their primary. Not the uniforms that went with it, they need to start from scratch there. But that logo's easily the best they've had (though the bar is, admittedly, not very high).

The "City" look, however, was three kinds of awful.
