2011 MLB Season Thread

If it's like Turner Field, it's so there's a passageway between the foul poles where security and other stadium personnel can go without obviously going on the field.

Then again, that dumbass shouldn't have leaned over the railing. I just wonder if he maintained possession of the ball through the duration of his fall, a la Calvin Johnson....

Sounds like it could serve its exact purpose if there was a roof on the passageway. But yeah, dumb decision for him to reach over like that. I bet he didnt see that gaping, uncovered hole in front of him

WHY IS THAT OPENING NOT COVERED BY SOMETHING????

Are you freaking kidding me? The guy fell into a gap that shouldnt even be there. I would love to know the reason behind leaving that gap behind the wall. That is just horrible. Very sad

Did the Rangers move in the fences? Maybe that is why its there.

I fell horrible for his son, one moment you are at a game with dad and then he dies. Very traumatic. However, this was bound to happen one day these fans are too aggressive going for a baseball.

Before anyone says anything, I think the stadium is safe. I've gone there three of four times a year at least since it opened, sat in every good or bad seat you can imagine. I feel like it is a secure environment. I hope the team and the MLB doesn't overreact to this. And Hedley, not to butt heads, but I wouldn't call a guy who took his kid to a game and tried to get a souvenir..... and DIED, a dumbass.

The gap is because up until a couple of years ago, there was a scoreboard keeper in there because the left field was a manual scoreboard. In fact, there was a platform there that was about 4 feet off the ground for him that was removed when the scoreboard was removed. They will probably put some kind of netting in there now.

Didn't this same thing happen in the same stadium last season? The guy last year didn't die that I know of, but what does this say about Rangers fans and balance?

You forget where I work. I constantly see fans to the damndest things to obtain an item that's worth a couple bucks for free, whether it tossed from the playing surface or launched from a t-shirt gun, etc.

The guy certainly is a dumbass for leaning over the railing to catch a ball. If he doesn't lean over the railing, he'd still be alive. And he died because he wanted a $5 baseball.

It happens at every stadium a few years ago I got soaked with two cups of beer at Yankee Stadium when Melky Cabrera tossed the third out in the stands. These fans all went for the ball and knocked over some one holding two cups of beer and and I got soaked. Its insane. I would love to get a foul ball but unless it lands in my lap its not worth moving.

I did forget where you work for a moment, but after seeing the video, I don't see anything extraordinary about what this guy did. More of a Jefferey Meier move than the true dumbass who leapt over the railing to catch a football at a Giants game.

The pain about this is do you install some sort of netting? or does the netting only encourage people to take risks?

I hope this has no ill-effect on Josh Hamilton who tossed the ball in the stands. The man is a serious addict and this could be the type of trigger of a relapse.

Dude, really? I agree that he shouldn't have leaned over the railing, but there's no need to be so insensitive about it.

We are all people.

Sad all around. Died in front of his four year old son; just a somber and disappointing thing to hear happen. I hope the kid can somehow be alright after witnessing that.

If I really wanted to be insensitive about it, I'd have posted what I said to my girlfriend and our roommate last night: "Just God's way of taking out the trash.".

He lost his life trying to catch a $5 baseball. Doesn't matter what his intentions were after he caught the ball, but he did something foolish to get the ball. Perfect word for the situation is "dumbass".....

In other news, the #1 prospect in the bigs is making his debut tonight in Anaheim. Peter Bourjos left last night's game with a leg injury, so the Angels have brought up Mike Trout from AA. He'll be the youngest player in the MLB at 19.

Hamilton's shooting smack within a week...

I hope not, but it's certainly a possibility. Obviously it's not his fault and logic dictates he has nothing to feel bad about, but most people would feel guilty. I hope he gets through.

My goodness, you heartless man.

The guy was trying to grab a gift for his 4 year old son, who will now grow up with out a dad. The throw was a little off so he reached for it and slipped. It's not like he jumped off a cliff for it.
