I could definitely see the Nats scooping Fielder. Half of our team are Boras guys, he's probably going to tell Fielder we will go above and beyond what he might be worth. I just fear him turning into a Albert Belle/Mo Vaughn like meatball in a few seasons.

Unfortunately, I can see the Nats scooping Fielder, paying him a 7-year deal when his body has two good years left in it before turning into a lump of lard, and eating the rest of it when he struggles to reach the Mendoza Line in 2014 while Michael Morse puts up another .300/30/100 campaign for a team like the Blue Jays.

We already have a good first baseman in Morse, even if we expect LaRoche's injury to severely impact his ability to hit. And once Harper comes up in the middle of next season, who's going to play CF? Jayson Werth? Please.

I'm all for the Nats busting out the checkbook and throwing some cash around, but first priority should be throwing cash at Ryan Zimmerman to spare us Nats fans an entire season of Yankees fans drooling over him as a replacement for A-Rod when he retires.

You should go take a look at A-Rod's contract... Yankees won't be looking for a replacement at 3B for years to come.

Does the contract stipulate that he'll play at 3B for the entire contract? I was thinking the Yankees would move A-Rod to DH and go after Zimmerman to play 3B.

Rumors are that Cards are after Ryne Sandberg, Cubs are after Mike Maddux. If the Cards get Sandberg, he'll lead the Cards to 20 straight titles just to spite the Cubs.

Please don't go to St. Louis, Sandberg. I'm sure you're welcome back in Chicago (although they did slap you across the face for choosing Quade over you....)

But can you imagine Sandberg in a Cardinals uniform?! *shivers* If you're gonna go somewhere else, Sandberg, go anywhere BUT St. Louis. Please.

That is exactly why the Nats won't sign Fielder. They already have two productive options for much cheaper. The CF need is a more pressing issue which may lead Washington to go after Sizemore.

I thought the whole "go after other teams' cast-offs" mantra died when Jim Bowden got booted out of DC.

I honestly think SP is a more pressing need than CF. Rick Ankiel might not be an ideal leadoff hitter but he still has that BIONIC ARM and can flash the leather pretty decently too. Ian Desmond might be putting it all together as a top of the order guy if his numbers the latter part of 2011 was any indication. I don't want BJ Upton bringing his Randy Moss attitude to the Nats; I still haven't gotten over giving Elijah Dukes (or whatever he goes by now) the benefit of the doubt.

I meant the White Sox.

But, seriously, thanks for that. I just hope he doesn't go to the Cardinals.

And now that I think about it, the White Sox are a viable option. Now there are two teams you can't go to Sandberg.

Give me a break with this Mike Maddux bullcrap.

The only reason the Cubs would have to NOT go after and hire Terry Francona, would be if he tells them (and all teams) that he wants time away from baseball.

Meh. Kind of lukewarm on Sandberg. He was the "absentee landlord" type of manager when he was down in Peoria first starting out.

Except that the White Sox don't have an opening at manager.

I don't think the cardinals hire Sandburg but they'd be stupid not to interview him. I'm not sure why he's highly regarded (I just don't know, not saying he doesnt deserve it) but he's high on the list of minor league managers ready to make the jump. It also wouldn't surprise me to see the cubs reach out to interview Oqendo as I believe he's been mentioned before as a manager canident for other teams.

I see the cardinals going after:

Francona

Maddon maybe

Oqendo

Sandburg

Pop Warner (cards AA manager)

And maybe rigglemen and valentine. Although I wouldn't care for either of those particularly.

There could be a wildcard out there but that's the list.

Btw Cubs fans, imagine Ryno with the birds on the bat. Now you know how we feel seeing Pujols in blue pinstripes! :)

I think the Cardinals should give Pujols as much money as they can, and also make him manager. Hey, that'd be tempting, wouldn't it? :P
