NE Gamers Made in China...?

Recommended Posts

Lately, I stopped by a sports store in a local premium outlet mall (The Pro Image) - and noticed that a handful of the MLB game caps have been are now being Made in China. Of course, being the skeptic about this I am, decided to buy a US-made model.

I have heard that the MiLB game caps are now China-made.... but I have yet to see one in person, a new MiLB game cap. Can anybody explain this?

We make stock trades and low-wage, low-skill jobs with no security. You want more than that, you can move to Cuba.

I've posted about this very topic here several times. New Era is trying to pull a fast one on consumers by slipping in the Chinese made caps into the US made stock and charging the same price (or in some cases, MORE) for these caps. It's a pretty low business practice if you ask me. The Chinese made caps are made with inferior materials, are put together awfully, they NEVER get the logos right, and cost the company less to produce. I have three or four of them in my collection and they stand out like a sore thumb amongst the American made on field caps I own. They just look terrible. A few months ago while in San Francisco I stopped into a Lids with my dad and showed him the exact same cap (Pirates throwback) side by side, and even he was stunned by how superior in quality the US made caps are. It hasn't made it to the full stock YET, but pretty much anything Yankees, Red Sox, and now I'm hearing Phillies, are all Chinese made now. Special made caps, like the flag patch caps (How patriotic, right?) and all the Angels caps last season were Chinese made too. I'd assume that the new Marlins, O's, and Jays caps are too. I plan on ordering them soon, and any of them that are Chinese made I will promptly ship right back.

I mean, I can't even begin to describe the full depths of the hatred I have for the Chinese made caps. I simply refuse to pay close to $40 for something that probably cost half the price to make as the US made caps and were probably put together by children. Add to that the insulting nature in which New Era is handling this by slipping these in unannounced and thinking their customers are too stupid to notice is enough to put one of my favorite companies in my personal dog house. I'm a HUGE collector of 59Fifty caps, especially the poly on field hats, but if they ship all production of them overseas and continue putting out inferior products, I'll never buy a New Era cap again.

And this isn't some America! :censored: YEAH! Thing either, it's a quality of product issue.

I completely agree with your take on the Chinese made caps. However, I did just pick up the new white panel Orioles cap at my local Hat Club the other day, and I'm glad to say that it is in fact U.S. made. The 3 other on-field caps I've bought the past year or so (Diamondbacks home and Orioles "O's" from Hat Club, Orioles TBTC from shop.mlb.com) have been U.S. made as well. New Era should at least keep the authentic on-field caps made in U.S.A. Hopefully there will be enough of an outcry to force them to.

I was intrigued by this topic, so I decided to do some research, using my crappy iPhone camera.

I own several authentic New Era caps, from the 90s Astros to the Mike Schmidt-era Phillies to the Team USA World Baseball Classic official cap.

I started my research using one of my personal favorite hats, the 90s era Houston Astros. I always loved this logo, but I never wear the hat because it's way too small for me. This was made prior to the 2007 New Era conversion from wool to polyester. As such, it's made in the USA.

Moving on, the next cap randomly selected was the Washington Nationals home cap, circa 2006. Unsurprisingly, this was made in the USA too.

In late 2008, I went on a retro cap binge, and one of the caps I purchased was a 1970-1991 Phillies. It bears repeating that I purchased this cap all the way back in late 2008.

This was the first cap I found that was made in China.

How long has New Era been using its Chinese manufacturing plant(s) to produce Cooperstown Collection caps? I can understand them outsourcing, since (I presume) the throwback caps would be in much lesser demand than current caps.

My next discovery really blew my mind. The Team USA WBC caps were made in China also.

New Era couldn't even bother to produce the Team USA World Baseball Classic caps in the freaking USA!?

It's already common knowledge that New Era outsources MiLB cap production, and my authentic Portland Sea Dogs cap proved as much.

So, was this all just some grand exposition to show off a small portion of my cap collection? Yes. But it also proves that New Era has been cutting costs by exploiting the horrific labor practices in China for many years now. I really wish the MLB would stand up to it.

That's the funny thing about it though, it's never consistent. I have the same USA cap (Red billed version, though), but it's made in the USA. And every poly MiLB cap I have is made in the USA as well. It really makes you look at the labels before you buy. It's almost like New Era put them out sporadically as a test to see if people would notice, or just used the crappy Chinese models when they got too many orders. Either way, it sucks.

New Era used to be a great American company. It was nice to know that all their stuff was made right here by Americans, but that is no longer the case. People get so upset when other people buy "Chinese counterfeits" but in reality, everything...and I mean everything is made in China.

Took a look at my collection...my Mets and Indians are USA made. My Lakewood Blueclaws is China made. Kinda sucks since I paid more for that one. Though it looks pretty good, and has held up better than my one Mets hat. Think that one was a dud, as it really did not last.

BMW used to be a great German company, but now has factories in other countries including the US. Shame on them too? New Era was once a small American company that become a huge global brand. They should have factories in multiple locations. I'm just trying to look at this from the other side, to be fair.

I have a Padres authentic New Era cap from 1990 that was made in Korea.

I had never realized that before until I started checking tags in my caps.

Wow! My late 90s Astros cap was made in the USA. New Era has been doing this for awhile, apparently.

I'd rather it be the latter than the former, because that way it at least seems like New Era is trying to get the American made caps before sending the Chinese ones out.
