5 in - 5 out - NFL 2012

Predictions for the upcoming NFL season that go beyond our usual record and playoff predictions...I got this idea while listening to ESPN radio on Friday. The two hosts did "5 in and 5 out" based on last year's playoff teams.

1: 5 in - 5 out: You predict which five teams (or more/less) from last year's playoffs won't make the postseason this year. Then you predict the five teams (or more/less) that you think will make the playoffs this year.

2. Who will be this year's surprise team/teams?

3. Which "favorites" coming into the season will not live up to their advance billing.

Last year's playoff teams:

AFC

  • New England
  • Baltimore
  • Pittsburgh
  • Houston
  • Cincinnati
  • Denver

NFC

  • Green Bay
  • San Francisco
  • New Orleans
  • Atlanta
  • Detroit
  • New York Giants

We'll come back at the end of the season and see how we did.

EDIT: I should add that by "favorite" I meant a team that most people think will make the playoffs. So it doesn't necessarily have to be a preseason Super Bowl pick or anything.

Great idea for a thread.

1: 5 in - 5 out:

5 out - Cincinnati, Denver, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Detroit

5 in - Buffalo, Kansas City, Tennessee, Chicago, Philadelphia

2. Who will be this year's surprise team/teams?

AFC - Buffalo Bills

NFC - Carolina Panthers

3. Which "favorites" coming into the season will not live up to their advance billing.

Atlanta, not so much a favourite. Just not liking them for some reason, Pittsburgh because the four leaf clover has run out.

1.

Five Out: Pittsburgh, Cincy, New Orleans, Atlanta, Detroit

Five In: Carolina, Philly, San Diego, Chicago, New York Jets

2.

Suprise

AFC: Buffalo

NFC: Washington

3. The Giants, I just don't feel like they are a championship caliber team. I also say Pittsburgh, because I'm a Ravens fan. :P

Cool concept, let's roll:

FIVE IN: Chicago, Philadelphia, Oakland, Jacksonville, Dallas

FIVE OUT: Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Cincinnati, New York Giants, Baltimore

SURPRISE TEAMS:

AFC: Jacksonville

NFC: Dallas

FAVORITES THAT WILL FALL:

AFC: Steelers. The time has come.

NFC: Saints. I think they're in more trouble than just losing their head coach.

Five in Five out:

Five out: NY Giants, ?New Orleans?, ?Atlanta? ,Cincinnati, Denver

Five in: Philadelphia, Chicago, Carolina, NY Jets, SD Chargers

God I have no confidence in picking the Saints or Falcons to miss the playoffs, but something's gotta give. Green Bay, Detroit, and Chicago are all very good, the Eagles started to flourish at the end of 2011, and the Niners are still well ahead of the NFCW pack.

--

Surprise teams:

NFC: Seattle

AFC: NY Jets

by the way, what constitutes "surprise"? This is a very vague term.

--

Disappointments:

NFC: NY Giants

AFC: Denver

Excellent idea!

1. 5 in - 5 out

FIVE IN - Dallas, Oakland, Buffalo, Philadelphia, Seattle.

FIVE OUT - NY Giants, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Atlanta (I had to pick five), New Orleans

2. Surprise Teams

AFC - Oakland

NFC - Seattle

3. Which "favorites" coming into the season will not live up to their advance billing?

Green Bay, NY Giants, and New England.

Cowboys - Lakers - LAFC - USMNT - LA Rams - LA Kings - NUFC

1.

Five In: Buffalo, Carolina, San Diego, Oakland, Philadelphia

Five Out: Denver, New Orleans, Detroit, Cincinnati, Atlanta

2. Surprise Teams

AFC: Buffalo (Oh so close last year before the wagon just crashed and burned. This year, with the Jets dealing with enormous pressure that will cause a figurative cave-in and Miami just plain out loud sucking, Buffalo has a great chance to get into the playoffs)

NFC: Carolina (Nearly every year, the team that finishes last in the NFC South ends up winning it the next season. Well, time for that trend to continue)

3. Favorites that will earn a 'I am Disappoint'

NY Giants (for obvious reasons), New Orleans (for VERY obvious reasons)

I did this with a friend of mine having no idea about the ESPN podcast so this is awesome!

1. 5 in - 5 out

FIVE IN - Raiders, Chiefs, Eagles, Bucs, and Bears.

FIVE OUT - Steelers, Bengals, Giants, Falcons, and (I'm sorry) Saints.

2. Surprise Teams

AFC - Chiefs

NFC - Bucs

3. Which "favorites" coming into the season will not live up to their advance billing?

Saints, Falcons, Giants, and Steelers.

1: 5 in - 5 out

FIVE OUT: Atlanta, New Orleans, Denver*, Pittsburgh, NY Giants*

FIVE IN: San Diego*, Buffalo, Carolina*, Seattle, Philadelphia

*Possibility, not a firm prediction

2. Who will be this year's surprise team/teams?

AFC: Buffalo. That D-line is scary with Mario Williams coming in.

NFC: Seattle. Matt Flynn will be this year's Tebow, except decent.

3. Which "favorites" coming into the season will not live up to their advance billing.

AFC: New England. The media's projections are the typical obnoxious hype - I'm pretty sure CBS is predicting 16-0. Frankly, I'm not sold on their defense, and their division got a lot tougher, with the Bills and Jets very capable of beating them.

NFC: San Francisco. Alex Smith will regress to the mean, which is sad, because his fluke season last year wasn't even that great to begin with.

FIVE IN: Jets, Bears, Panthers, Chargers, Redskins, Eagles

FIVE OUT: Steelers, Packers, Saints, Giants, Ravens, Falcons

AFC SURPRISE TEAM: Indianapolis. I don't think they'll make the playoffs, but they'll win 6-8 games this year.

NFC SURPRISE TEAM: Cardinals. Again, they won't make the playoffs, but they have enough talent on both sides of the ball to finish over .500.

AFC DISAPPOINTMENT: The New England Patriots. A team without a defense is a team without a chance.

NFC DISAPPOINTMENT: The New York Giants. I just think they got hot at the right time last year. I don't think they'll even make the playoffs, much less win it all.

Sigs are for sissies.

AFC: Steelers No great threat at WR with Mike Wallace currently holding out.

NFC: Giants Lets face it they got very lucky last season and lost many weapons, not sure if Bradshaw can handle the load at rb

I don't think that 5 will fall from grace. Cincinnati definately, but Houston and Denver will get in because they play in weak divisions and will win them. Possibly Pittsburgh. I'll do 4 in 4 out if that's ok.

4 Out- Cincinnati, Atlanta, New Orleans, Pittsburgh

4 in- Buffalo, Philadelphia, Carolina, San Diego

Surprise- AFC- Buffalo

NFC- Carolina

Disappointment- AFC- Pittsburgh- They've taken some blows and haven't done much to improve themselves

NFC- New Orleans- with one of the best QBs in the league, the sanctions/suspensions are just too much to keep focused.

Not that this will be my official prediction coming on Labor Day.

Five In

Eagles, Bears, Panthers, Bills, Chargers

Five Out

Saints, Bengals, Steelers, Giants, Lions

Surprise AFC: Bills

Surprise NFC: Panthers

Fizzling Favorite Steelers, I would be really concerned about Big Ben's shoulder

On the Clock Browns

For me its not that I dont like the Lions, its I really like the Packers and Bears and the NFC has so many strong teams the Lions could go 10-6 and miss the playoffs.

What's with all the lack of love for the Lions?

There secondary isn't all that great still. And you know Stafford/Johnson are due for a bit of a downturn. Could be wrong, I just don't believe.

And a running game that may even worse than last year's... which was very bad to start with.

Plus, the exceptionally high "knucklehead" factor in that locker room and on their sideline isn't going to help things.
