2013 MLB Logo and Uniform Changes

Wow you people are nuts. The blue road hat was one of the best hats in baseball and there's nothing superior about the red caps on the road.

So much for that vote they had last week. I guess they just decided to ignore the results.

I could not agree more (unless you said "the best hat in baseball").

Kinda seems that way. The poll was kinda stacked for the red to win (with one "all red" option" and three options with varying uses of the blue) and it still did not go their way like they probably assumed it would.

And I agree with those that say no bird on bat cap. I can live with it as a BP cap, but really, it should just be a fashion cap.

That's exactly what they did. They didn't even address the results and pretend there wasn't a mistake. They just kinda dropped it. It's terrible.

Makes the Stars' mooterus April Fools joke seem fan-friendly by comparison.

The Cardinals wearing red caps on the road sucks so bad. The navy looked great, and I absolutely love when teams have a contrasting home and road look. They look like the friggen Angels now.

So in the gap between Musial and when they "re-introduced" the blue cap, the St. Louis Cardinals looked terrible? Please.

It's all just an opinion. I do like the blue cap, I just like the red one better. Even with the road uniforms. Personal preference, I guess.

The blue makes no sense because the road uniforms have no blue on them besides the cap. Red numbers, red script, red belt, red socks, red undershirts, and then a blue hat? No. Looks so dumb and unprofessional. Last night with the red caps they looked as good as it gets.

First off, while terrible is too strong, yes, I would say they didn't look as good.

Additionally, though, it's worth noting a few things.

Plain grey uniforms without any striping were only paired with red caps for 6 years from 1965-71. After that, the entire history of the red road caps were paired with thick red/white/navy stripes on the sleeves, collar, and pants from 1971-91.

The base of those uniforms was grey for 12 years from 1971-75 and 1985-91, with powder blues in the middle from 1974-84.

The red road cap absolutely pairs well with powder blues (don't take that as an endorsement of the powder blues—it's not), and it even looks better with the chunks of color on the other parts of the jersey with a grey base. A lot of that has to do with the white stripe which goes a great deal towards working with the white STL logo.

But the current uniforms are much closer to the original 6 years (and thankfully so), and they don't pair nearly as well with the red cap. It's a very drab look.

Of course we're all welcome to our opinions, but my point is, let's not go pretending that the 27 years in which they did wear red caps on the road were all the same—with each other or the current set. They weren't, and they aren't.

The proper way to wear the navy cap (and I fear this will be ruined when they occasionally pull it out now) is with a navy belt and always had been. This was the perfect compromise. It allowed for enough navy to not look out of place and to play off the many instances of navy trim in the uniform. It connected with the past, gave the road uniform enough of it's own visual without being disconnected. Additionally, and I wonder if many would argue this outside of any specific context, navy and grey go much better with each other than red and grey.

I'll give you that blue goes better with grey much more than red does, but in the Cards case red is the must better choice in my opinion. Will be interesting to see what they wear from here on out after all the talk about the voting scam and what not.

There's navy around the letters. That's navy. The letters are red. The red STL being on a navy background, which again is on the jersey and is a team color, goes well with the red letters on the jersey. See? Red letters on jersey, red letters on cap. And again, there IS navy. People need to stop acting like navy is completely nonexistent. And, again as well, it's no different than the Red Sox using a navy cap for the homes or previous roads that everyone wants back.

Lots of teams wear dark colored hats with their lighter color being the main number color (6 teams by my count). It's not "so dumb and unprofessional when 1/5th of Major League Baseball does it. Plus the Cardinals have plenty of navy in their uniforms to justify having a navy hat and the navy hat uses red lettering so everything is connected and tied together.

Road uniforms = darker. Always have in baseball and it's why the Cardinals old road look was a perfect road baseball uniform. Better than the home uniform in my opinion.

I'm a little annoyed that the fan vote seemed like nothing more in the end than a gimmick that they were just going to ignore.

For the record, I like both looks and voted as such, although I would prefer the blue be the default look and the red be the special look.

Has it been mentioned in this ginormous thread that MLB isn't allowing more than one style batting helmet this year (or am I reading this wrong)?

From the Cleveland Indians, via Hardballtalk.com http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/04/02/the-marginalization-of-chief-wahoo-continues/

Nothing is changing on our 2013 uniforms except for the batting helmets. By MLB rule – with the new helmets being universally adopted – teams were only allowed one logo and not a different helmet for home and road.

It's where I sit.

Wait, what?

1. why does such a rule exist?

B. is it true? We haven't heard anything about it, have we?

iii. could this be the driving force behind the Cardinals horrible decision to wear red hats on the road?

Am I such a bad person if I say I like both navy and red on the road for the Cards? Both look great and can be tied to successful eras in their history. They should alternate them between road series.

I call BS on this one. I feel that there would have been word spread about it much earlier (as in before last season even began) before it was put into effect. Otherwise, why would the Marlins have made those orange helmets (rarely used though they are) for their new set?

Besides, how do you explain the Tigers, Orioles, Nats, and Braves who still have their distinct home/road batting helmets?

From San Berdoo to Kalamazoo.
