2013 MLB Logo and Uniform Changes

I agree with the last two. I really like the Marlins look, just execution errors like white mark on gray, bad numbers and the non-continuous colors across the letters. And the Astros look like the Astros again. Maybe not in an ideal way, but still more so than they have in a long time.

Anybody else notice how thin the Astros' jerseys were? I could see right through Justin Maxwell's jersey and could tell what kind of undershirt he was wearing.

That's a common problem with the Cool-Base jerseys.

I had never noticed it as much as tonight. Maybe because I was really looking closely at the jerseys.

And that brings me to my biggest issue with Cool-Base jerseys. They cost as much as double-knit (in some cases even more) authentics, and I'm not convinced that the C-B material would hold up nearly as well. Maybe my perception i wrong, though.

Less than one game in and the Astros plain radially arched block wordmark is already tired. If anybody should have a stylized wordmark across their chests it's the Astros.

At least they're in the correct colors.

I agree. As I have said before, the most important aspect of team branding is the colors. In going back to navy and orange, the Astros are the Astros again. The hat logo is mostly good (even with terrible beveling), and two or three years from now, the Astros might very well change their uniforms again, while keeping the hats the same. I personally think the unis are a little too plain. The number font is horrendous. They need to pick either solid navy or solid orange caps and run with them, not go back and forth. But all the problems with this identity aside, they look like the Astros again.

Meanwhile, the Rangers are still saddled with those awful black dropshadows muddying up their look. Couple that with the thorny font and their NoBs are damn near illegible. They don't need a radical overhaul as the Astros did, but they sure as hell need a tweak.

I actually don't mind the Rangers thorny MLB Block rip-offs. I guess they have grown on me. But yes, black has inexplicably been in their identity for about 13 years now, and when they did a half-hearted rebrand, they made it more prominent for some reason. They need to completely remove the black drop shadows and remove the white outlines from the names and numbers. I think their current font would work well (and the names would be legible) if they just had blue numbers/letters with red outlines. Do that, put "Rangers" on the home jerseys, add placket piping, pick a hat color and the set is probably in the top ten of MLB. However, the Rangers organization won't do that because their identity is (and should be) blue, but the red sells really well. What a mess.

Opening Day should be like the playoffs: you always wear your best look. If the Twins think the alts are their best look, they shouldn't be alts.

I agree. As much as I like the Pirates black alt, I was disappointed to see them wearing it today. Opening Day is a formal (for lack of a better term) occasion. Wear the home whites for it.

No official word from the Cardinals so far. I guess it'll be a game time surprise.

It's red. I'm at the game right now. It looks so out of place IMO. I'm really disappointed they ditched the navy cap.

Thing is, it was discovered that there was an error in the code, or something, and twitter votes for the navy caps counted as votes for red and vice versa. If you checked hashtag counter sites during the vote, all of them had navy with 3-4 times as many votes as red, yet the Cardinals site showed the red far ahead. Navy won on the site voting by 10%. Plus I believe maybe Motte was the only player on twitter not to vote for navy.

They rigged that whole thing. They were gonna go with all red regardless, but wanted to make it seem like the fans had a say, and it backfired big time. Way to go, Cards.

Exactly what I thought, "error" is definitely not the correct word to describe what happened. That's what happens when you incorrectly assume what your fans want. It's too bad the ownership couldn't just suck it up and base it off the fan vote rather than rigging it for a worse option.

I've got a dribbble, check it out if you like my stuff; alternatively, if you hate my stuff, send it to your enemies to punish their insolence!

Sharp. That's how I describe these 'Stros unis. They look like baseball uniforms. The team looks sharp. Good uniform.

This is pretty much how I see them, too. Are they extraordinarily unique? Absolutely not, but I can't say anything bad about the way they look.

Exactly. I would have preferred something based on these...

But what they came up with isn't bad at all. It looks really good and it's a huge upgrade from their "old west" uniforms. I don't think anyone will argue that the new look is an instant classic, but the new uniforms are nowhere near the disaster some people are making them out to be. The whole "they should have gone futuristic" argument is silly. No one seems to mind that the Tigers don't look like baseball's version of a Bengals helmet, but God forbid the Astros don't have flashing LEDs in their hats and rocket flames for stripes.

Agree with everything you said here. It's not that there's anything really bad about their uniforms; it's that there's not much good about them. Personally, I think they're OK, but they missed such a great opportunity to incorporate a shooting star into their look, which would have looked fantastic.

About the Astros name, the beauty of it is that you can really go anywhere with it. If you want to go all futuristic sci-fi with it, it would work. If you wanted to keep things simple with a traditional script and a star present, it would work just as well. Heck, you could go back to ancient societies with their constellations and stargazers and it would be appropriate for the name. "Astros" just has to relate to stars - nothing more, nothing less.
