Houston Texans pet peeve

Recommended Posts

Imho there can be no more fitting nickname for a team from the city that was named for the Father of Texas.

Except for the fact that most of Texas couldn't care less about the team. The "Texans" run a very distant second amongst the people they claim to represent.

Not only is the nickname silly, it's ironic to boot.

You'd actually be surprised. They are definitely the second in popularity, but it seems for everyone that's a cowboys fan there's an equal amount of people that hate them. And the texans recent success has the cowboys on the decline, plus how can you hate JJ Watt?

The name, i really don't mind it or think it sounds odd. i think stallions would sound very terrible, Apollos like some mentioned above would've been a really cool name and tied in with the other sports teams and if we ever get an NHL team i think that would be a frontrunner.

I would instantly hate an NFL team named the Stallions because that would be the third horse-themed team.

As for a Houston NHL team, I would believe the front runner would absolutely be the Aeros.

I wonder if this could kinda be why they picked it? Much like "New England Patriots" or "Golden State Warriors" trying to market to a larger geography, maybe thinking this would attract people in the various "neutral" Texas geographies.

Disclaimer: If this comment is about an NBA uniform from 2017-2018 or later, do not constitute a lack of acknowledgement of the corporate logo to mean anything other than "the corporate logo is terrible and makes the uniform significantly worse."

They definitely thought that, but unless they named the franchise "The Dallas Cowboys", no one outside the Houston Metropolitan Area was going to switch allegiances. Maybe you pick off the Cowboy haters in the state, but they'd have been fans of the new Houston team regardless of the new name being Texas-centric.

Go Astros!

Go Texans!

Go Rockets!

Go Javelinas!

Here is a very good uniform...

Here is a below average uniform...

Little things can make as big difference.

I've always thought it would look great if the Texans wore their red pants/navy socks both home and away, or at least for the road set...

I can understand why some would have preferred a space-themed nickname to tie into Houston's other team names, but the name Texans has history in football and the Houston Texan's logo is one of the best in sports (IMHO). I would think the name Texans is good for regional marketing. If Houston keeps winning while the Boys in Dallas struggle, I could see more Texans jumping on the Houston bandwagon.

I don't like the name because they're not the only NFL team in Texas. Otherwise, it'd be fine. Bland, but fine.

Do they HAVE to be?

I really don't get the hatred behind the use of "Texans" as a mascot. Seriously...

When the team announced their nickname.. I offen wondered if Kansas City would object, since they were the Dallas Texans before moving to KC. But I also wonder why the public in Houston make Adams keep the OIlers nickname and team colors in Houston like the Cleveland did when Modell moved the team to Baltimore.

History? Like 5 minutes' worth, and every one of those minutes was failure.

The AFL Dallas Texans had 2 winning seasons in three years and won an AFL title.

I agree. The nickname for the NY Mets is a nod to the old Metropolitans baseball team of NYC. Are the Mets the only metropolitans in NYC? Of course not ... It's just a nickname.

Wow. Apples to Volkswagens there.

If the Mets were the "New York New Yorkers", you'd have a case. But their nickname is in no way analogous to "Texans" for all the reasons discussed above.

Yeah I think the phillies would probably be the Best comparison in American sports. I don't mind their name, personally.

Things could have been worse. When Lamar Hunt moved the Dallas Texans to Kansas City, he originally wanted to keep the Texans nickname. BTW in that earlier list of teams named Texans let us not forget the NFL Dallas Texans of 1950 and the Arena Football Dallas Texans of 1990-93.

The owner of The Texans asked Lamar Hunt's permission to use the name and Hunt obliged.

The Kansas City Texans...you reckon that would get some discussion on this board?

Yup. They'd be the football equivalent of the Utah Jazz.

That's WAY worse than the Jazz.
