If you're going to do color vs. color, make sure it's not the SAME color

I was lucky enough to get free tickets to a recent Richmond Flying Squirrels games vs. the Akron Aeros. The Squirrels were wearing their black jerseys (which look Okay, but I'd rather see whites) and the Aeros were ALSO wearing their black jerseys. I realise it's only AA ball but it still looks like a horrendous scrimmage when this is the teams on the field (apologies for bad phone/instagram pic)

Also, the Aeros wordmark is super uninspired.

I had this same problem at a Salt Lake Bees vs Sacramento River Cats game a few years ago. The Bees were wearing black road jerseys, and horrifyingly, the River Cats decided to wear their black BP jerseys instead of their beautiful white home vests. And that was at the AAA level. Yuck.

I have seen that on a major league level. Padres at Brewers very late in the County Stadium era. I don't know whether the alts were the exact same color, but close enough from the upper deck. There ought be be a rule that only one team can wear an alt and that it's home team's choice...regardless of how close the alt colors are. Yes then the Marlins would have to wear the gray...oh no.

Meh, baseball. Gray and white are too close for my liking anyway, so 90% of baseball games have this problem for me.

College ball does it right- most teams have beautifully colored alts from their school colors.

Doesn't really matter in baseball. Everyone knows the center fielder in blue isn't on the same team as the batter in blue. In football or basketball, however, it would be a huge problem.

True, but it just doesn't look right. Grey and White are just boring, I want to see some color out there. Plenty of teams have great colored uniforms, The Rays, Seattle, Oakland, etc. I'd much rather see Rays break out the blue when playing against a team in white, instead of grey. Or against a team in grey, for that matter.

It's an unpopular opinion, I guess, but I prefer white vs grey. Since the implementation of alternates in MLB, some teams' games look like beer league softball games.

Not sure how unpopular it is, but I'm definitely an advocate of white vs gray. For whatever reason I generally don't care for colored baseball jerseys. Probably just a tradition/I'm used to it deal. Probably doesn't help that I hate seeing teams wearing jerseys with same colored numbers (Rays, Braves, Angels).

I prefer white vs gray as well. I like that alternates exist, but I wish that they were truly alternate (i.e., worn maybe 10% of the time, tops).

Perhaps to the crowd, sure, but what if you're, say, trying to put on a pickoff play at second and the pitcher can't tell which player's his shortstop and which is the baserunner at a quick glance? Sure, he should be throwing the ball to the bag regardless but he may well let one get away that shouldn't have even been thrown.

I once played a white-on-white and a blue-on-blue game. Both were pure hell.

That CHW-OAK game was right around when the league "recommended" that teams stop wearing similar alts against each other. CHW / SD / ATL were the worst about it. SInce then (2010 or 2011), it's a rarity. Someone did it earlier this year though. I think it was CHW again, but I don't remember off the top of my head. It was commented on in the 2013 MLB thread.

This is not the same color but it was really hard to follow on TV.

So if I correctly recall, here's what happened. Illinois hosted Wisconsin. Illinois wanted to wear their orange informs (superstition). However, they did not want Wisconsin wearing their white uniform (superstition) so they did not inform Wisconsin, who brought their red road uniforms. The result was a disaster.

Wisconsin was successful in their whites because they were so good at home, not because of the uniform. Superstition messed with the integrity of the game here (or at least the viewability of the fans).

I am sure some people would say "this is why Wisconsin needs a black alt". But I'd say most would agree that Illinois needs to either inform the other team that they are wearing orange or just suck it up and wear white.

Edit: I just noticed the photo I linked to was from a blog dedicated to hating the Badgers...the blogger suggested that UW should have asked Illinois which uniforms they were wearing. I suppose that's one way to look at it. Also, that was from 2003...man does time fly when you are old.

I still can't believe that game happened like that. The referees should have taken one look at that and sent Illinois (the home team) back into their room to change.

Yeah, that's not really an unpopular opinion at all. I don't get the whole "There's not enough contrast!!" whine (don't even get me started on the boobs who complain about gold vs. white).

What bugs me is that the Blue Jays have worn their blue ale a lot more this year, especially on the road. It's a damn shame because their current road is my favourite one of their set.
