dcameronh
I just heard today that they announced the new mascot (although it still needs to be approved my the UT regents) for the new school that will start next year. University of Texas - Pan America (UTPA) and University of Texas - Brownsville (UTB) will combine next year to from the newly named NCAA Division 1 school University of Texas - Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) and will be know as the "Vaqueros" (which is spanish for "Cowboys"). The official colors will be Orange, Green and Blue as these are a combo of the previous school colors on the logos shown below. No logos have been announce yet but their is talk that they will use a logo of the statue that is on the UTPA campus, also shown below. They will take the place of UTPA in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) starting next fall in all sports. Your thoughts on the name and a design for a new logo?http://www.valleycentral.com/news/story.aspx?id=1118977
Burmy
I think the "Buckaroos" would have been an awesome nickname...ties into both the English and Spanish-speaking fanbases.
illwauk
People really think a mouthful like University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley is better than, say, Rio Grande University?I don't know if it's arrogance or just plain clulessness, but the naming conventions of these state university systems is confusing and all sorts of idiotic. Why not just let these schools form their own identities rather than sticking them with names that will always brand them as second-rate?

cajunaggie08
UTB was previously the scorpions (a mascot they inherited from their semi-merger with Texas Southmost College in 1991) and became knows as the Ocelots in 2013 after the UTB-TSC relationship ended. Seadragon76
Ehh... It doesn't sound like the nickname is going over too well. I like the idea, but it sounds like people aren't happy about it.

UTB is an NAIA school.Yes, they decided that they would discontinue all the UTB sports after this year and the UTPA sports would just stay in the WAC and be known as UTRGV instead. Here are some articales about the situation with UTB sports. I think that the UTB NAIA athetics programs should just transfer to Texas Southmost Collage as UTB athletic facilities are owned by them anyways. They could just keep all the same staff and athletes but just with TSC instead of UTB. That is when they were called the Scorpions when the two schools had a partnership in the past.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Texas%E2%80%93Rio_Grande_Valleyhttp://www.brownsvilleherald.com/premium/article_b0fe1c02-153c-11e4-a0e5-001a4bcf6878.html?mode=jqmhttp://www.valleymorningstar.com/sports/article_a96ac342-1216-11e4-bc9e-0017a43b2370.htmlUTB / TSC partnership articleshttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Texas_at_Brownsville#Athleticshttp://www.brownsvilleherald.com/opinion/letters_to_editor/article_db8a06d0-e6d6-5f94-ad16-80c1fca75b79.html?mode=jqm

Maybe they'll merge with TCU and then you can just throw the entire NFC North into a blender to get a vibe for what they might look like. 5th in NAT. TITLES | 2nd in CONF.
